I have been surfing your forum for some time now, and I have decided to join up. I already have a fast car, however I want a can that I can race and mod without worry, so I am thinking about a Elise or a RX-8. If you have any questions ask away :D
Thanks

RX-8 or Lotus Elise comming soon
The Elise has a much larger amount of after market parts available but the quality is not up to an RX-8. The Elise also happens to be much closer to a race car than an 8 but the Elise is a bitch as a daily driver. I'm amazed you aren't comparing the Elise to something more similar like a Miata.
If you really wanna race something I suggest you find your nearest kart racing track (not karts with safety rails or Malibu GP stuff) and visit it. You will quickly learn that kart racing is faster, more challenging, more convenient and lower cost. The other cool thing is you are racing other people, not just the clock. These things are truly fulfilling to race. I would think that is why most F1 and Champ car drivers still run them in the off season.
I'f you are looking for a new car only I would recommend an Elise. If your open to other cars I would get a 3rd gen Rx-7 as it has amazing potential and is as light as a pancake.
Thanks guys, I still want the car to be street leagal and drivable. I just really want a fun "toy" car to drive. The Top Gear review of this car got me excited for the RX-8, before that, I was pretty much set on a Elise. Also, it is more practical, looks cool, and has an awsome interior. But I cant really make a decision untill I test drive them both back to back.

dunno much about the elise but i can its lighter and def more of a race car. and since u have other cars it would make a fun occational driver. i wish i had the extra 5K and patience to wait til it came out .. i might gone for it.

The elise has the toyota 2zz from the Celica GT-S. There are parts aplenty for this engine and quality is Toyota quality. For a no compromise sports car, you will not beat an Elise, assuming you can get on the waiting list at all in the next couple of years. Only 3000 a year being sold in North America initially and then no more than 5-6000k year with very high demand.
You mentioned top gear. Are you in the UK or in the US? It makes all the difference in regards to the Elise.
If you don't need practicality the Elise is a no brainer. Or if you want something even more mod friendly then go with an STi or an EVO, both make for very formidable track cars. Either car with pretty minimal mods could put the smack down on a stock 996 turbo. The RX-8 would probably be best if you want to autox it and race in B stock, so far mods aren't very plentiful and it doesn't seem to be all that mod friendly of a car.

only because people trying to modify the car aren't usually doing it as well as it was done in the first place doesn't mean the car doesn't have potential. for christ's sakes, it's not a civic, and doesn't have a turbo you can just use a higher boost pressure with.

Precisely why it will never be as mod friendly, and cost effective to mod as a turbo car...
I never said it doesn't have potential, there isn't a car on the planet that doesn't have the potentiel to be made faster.
