We moved into a new house in a new development no house is more than 8 months old on our street. here are a list of stupid people and what they have done.
1. No one understands fertilizer, all thier lawns are brown so all they do is water excessively and makes thier yards soft like mud. All they need is a $25 dollar bag of fertilizer every month or 2
2. My neighbor down the street pulled up half his lawn to put rock down, he is doing it himself and he is not pulling all the grass up just laying some over the top of his dead muddy grass. Also the rock was delivered in the street basically blocking half the street for 5 days.
3. Nobody says hi
4. A new family moved in with a Kia Sportage and they put an aftermarket alarm in it that they set off everytime they touch or get something out of thier car. This morning it went off 3 times at 7:00 am
5. It is only my street that seems to be like this, all the other people I have met have been very friendly but live on another street! Maybe you have to be not nice to live in my neighborhood?
6. All the landscaping looks like sticks, they all water to much and dont prune anything so it all has like 2 leaves and 3 foot tall branches.
The worst part is the houses are not cheap, they range in the mid 200's to 400's why don't people take pride in thier homes?????
Just me complaining

1) who cares...didn't you look at the neighboorhood BEFORE you purchased...the upkeep of the neighbors environment will always give you a clue to what to expect from them..
2)go around the friggin' rocks and mix yourself a Tom Collins sit on the porch and be the arm chair quarter back telling him how to landscape his own lawn...
3)who cares...do you need people to say hi so you feel better?
4)send em a note saying it's a KIA...have you looked at the most desirable autos by car thieves?..KIA is not on it...turn your alarm sensitivity down...everytime their alarm goes off..hit your panic button on your key fob...they'll get the idea soon...
5)i'll come over and hang out with you and maybe some of my charming personality will wear off on you or sell the dang house and move to the other 'friendly' street...
6)you don't live in a greenhouse...send everyone on the block subscriptions to landscaping magazines...get some pamphlets from Lowe's or Home Depot re: plant care and stick them all over their lawns...
:D

Hmm... "not cheap" is relative. I'd love to be able to buy a single-family house for the mid-200s. But to answer your question: It sounds like your neighbors have grossly overextended themselves to buy these homes. They're probably making mortgage payments that are way too high for their incomes, so as a result they don't have anything left over to spend on landscaping or on decent cars (a Kia Sportage?! Puhleeeze.) What little they attempt to do for "landscaping" they have to do themselves because they can't afford to have it done right.

My family moved into a new subdivision when I was 17 and we had no sod outside of our house, just dirt. We waited for a year to do the front lawn; ourselves I might add. Not because we couldn't afford it, because my mom didn't know what to do, plus we have winter. Landscaping isn't that hard, there is no sense throwing thousands of dollars at unskilled laborers when I can do the same thing for a quarter of the cost and still have it done right. Plus I got to operate big equipment!!
As well a kia sportage is a perfectly decent car for people who use them to get from A to B. My father is the same way, he drove the shittiest cars produced until recently but he could afford to buy a german or italian car for every day of the week if he was so inclined, yes that was very frustrating to me. Some people just don't care about cars, don't assume their overextended because they choose not to spend their money on average cars.
Well they are not renters, we have a no rent clause in our home owners association. I do agree that most of them are over extended, one of our neighbors had put thier home up for sale just after moving in. I looked it up on MLS (realtors website) to see the houses in our neighborhood for sale and nobody has any furniture! When I buy a house I make sure I can move in make the payments, and furnish every last bit. I never understood why you would have a 4000 sq ft house and either no furniture or patio furniture indoors.
We have a new neighbor that has decided to run his carpet cleaning business from his house, which is against county and sudivision codes. So he just refuses the certified letters from zoning, and ignores everyone. He is also on a corner lot so we see all his mess.
Wish we could ignore his 4 beat up carpet cleaning vans, a dump truck, a bobcat, a diesel fuel tank on his back porch, a 30+ go fast boat in the front yard, his vehicles, his parents vehicles, his employees vehicles, etc. So much for a restricted subdivison. And he does most cleaning at night so they start all these trucks in the evening. And he had a few of his employees living over top his garage for a few weeks.
Does sugar work the same in diesel fuel????

Damn, I would kill to find a 4000 sq ft house around here for 200-400k. I've seen some crappy houses in a lousey neighborhood that's less than 1000 sq ft that is asking for 300k, and it makes you wonder, wth are those people thinking, or even the people who are buying those.
Since the developement is only 8 months old, can't you give a little slack? I've been working on straightening out my lawn for 3 years now, and still needs alot of work. Anyway you sounds like you would like living here in Utah, hehe, you have to have a nice lawn, and a tighty yard, or your hated by the neighbors (true story exagrated...alittle).
Yeah the alarm thing would drive me nuts, the lawn care issues, I would probably laugh about. Man those house prices sound really nice. Sounds like something I could afford. My parents property is 1/8th (i think.. It might just be 1/4th) acre with 2 houses on it. 800+/- on one and 1700+/- on the other. They just recently got it estimated at 1.2 million.
I think that people should understand that just because they own a piece of property does not relieve them of being polite and aware of other people. Sure, if you don't know how to take care of your lawn that's one thing, but there are certain things that are genuinely RUDE that people should avoid. Such as operating loud power equipment when it's dark outside, playing overly loud music outdoors, and a few of the things that was mentioned by the original posters, like the crap they left on the road. It's not whining, people need to respect others and acknowledge that yes, other people do indeed exist. So someone tell my neighbor to move his darn car from in front of my house... it hasn't been moved in weeks!! Maybe if he has a flat he will have to do something about it.
i live in a neighbor hood comprised of 300-400k homes. i let my dog **** in my yard, i don't clean it up until its dry as a nun's ****. i don't like my grass 2 inches tall...i like it 2.876. you like your tOmAToEs...i like my tomatoes. this isn't utopia...

Buy some casters and push it to some other spot within the neighborhood. That'd be very amusing! :D
