It's weird, dust drives me crazy with sneezing and burning eyeballs, but pollen doesn't bother me at all.

i'm in the same boat. i always forget just how bad they get until they go full fledged. at the beginning of spring i was a little annoyed but so happy it was finally warming up. the last week or two i have been absotely miserable and end up going to bed earlier just so that i can throw a wash cloth on my eyes and be asleep instead of having them open and burning.

I've had allergies for years that can be at times debilitating. It's just something I've learned to live with, and when they hit nothing helps ... except enough ephedrine based drugs that I sleep for 18 hours.

That changed this year, and I couldn't be happier about it!

What changed? Well, my Mom found a mention in one of her magazines like Mother Earth News or something like that, that listed herbal remedies for certain things. Under seasonal allergies it listed two herbs - Butterburr and Stinging Nettle (or Nettle Root). I figured what the heck and bought a bottle of each, and let me tell ya I think I'm cured. Seriously, it's night and day difference. No prescription I've had over the years did a damn thing, crazy that a couple herbs that've been used for thousands of years were NEVER mentioned by doctors, and did the trick.

My mom went to see some Chinese doctors in China last year and it actually helped

Maybe I should see them this year ...

mine didn't kick in until i went away for college 12 years ago. my cousin's used to get them really bad and lived next door to me but i never even sneezed. when i went away to college in the midwest i got them really bad there and when i would return to the southwest i'd have them there for the first time. ever since then i've had them pretty bad.

i've tried claritin which didn't help, tylenol which didn't help, and alavert which kind of helped. i may have to try boostd's method. my dad used to dry our towels outside and give us local honey saying that the pollen from both methods would help us to keep from being affected by them. he may have been onto something since it happened after i left. either that or just introduction to new pollen breaking down my system - not sure.

I used to have really bad allergies until my mom's friend got me to take some herbal stuff to boil in water. It tastes like the worst thing on earth, but after doing it for 3 springs straight, my allergies are now under control for the most part. Chinese medicine FTW (no side affects). For many years, my sister and I would both buy these allergy needles. They were almost $300/person. It didn't do much good until I tried chinese herbal remedies. I'm not going to tell you guys what is contained in this 'package' because if I told you guys, you would probably not want to drink this concoction.

I'll definately give those a try. I have serious allergy problems and I'm sick of sinus surgeries.

Generic Loratadine with Pseudoephedrine FTW!!! The kind you have to give them your drivers license for...in order to make sure you don't make any meth...

I will, however, be checking out those herbs. Are they something that you take year round in order to get levels high in your system, or do you only take them at the times when allergens are highest? My gf hates pharmaceuticals and refuses to take anything not homeopathic. I will try and post the results.

Thanks for the tip!

I have the opposite of most allergies. I get terrible allergies indoors - no matter where I am, if allergies are going to hit, they'll hit hard while I'm at home, in the office, at the store, etc. As soon as I get outside or even in my car, my nose almost immediately clears up.

Enough about me though, check out some Walphed PE, it's Walgreens off-brand pseudoephedrine-free sinus & allergy medication. That stuff knocks the allergies out of me for days at a time, people are amazed when they try it (try taking two!). It even works well for the sinus symptoms that come along with colds. Weird thing is, the name brand equivalent doesn't work nearly as well.

Found this on WebMD:

Among those generating the loudest buzz right now is the European herb butterbur (Petasites hybridus), which, says Hardy, "has had some very impressive clinical trial results."

In one study, published recently in the British Medical Journal, a group of Swiss researchers showed how just one tablet of butterbur four times daily was as effective as a popular antihistamine drug in controlling symptoms of hay fever -- without the traditional symptom of drowsiness that sometimes occurs. In a second study, presented at the 60th annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (AAAAI), a group of British researchers put their stamp of approval on butterbur's effectiveness in quelling symptoms of grass allergy.

Other herbal supplements proving helpful, says Hardy, include freeze-dried nettles and a tonic made from the herb goldenseal, which she recommends adding to still one more natural treatment -- a saline (salt water) nasal spray.

"The saline works to wash out pollen and reduce or thin mucous -- the goldenseal has astringent and local antibacterial properties which can aid in this process," Hardy tells WebMD.

For me it was taking the concoction early spring or right before you develop signs of allergies. The beautiful thing is when you take chinese medicine, your body builds up immunity to whatever makes you allergic. In some cases, you will no longer have to take anything. In most cases, you will have less intense allergic reactions and still take this herbal drink yearly. The worst part of preparing the package of herbs is it makes your house smell disgusting and it tastes even worse.

Here is my line up of meds. I keep eye drops in my car, work, house and in my pocket! Unlike some of you guys, these meds work for me and allow me to go outside and have a fairly normal life. My life was miserable during allergy season until these came readily available. I used to get very dizzy and irritable. And I wanted to scratch my eyes out!!

Zyrtec D
Claritin D
Nasacort AQ
Alcon allergy eye drops

I was a basket case every spring but I started allergy shots about 5 years ago. I'm very nearly cured! I still need "nose squirts" for the bad days but I breath without any problem and need no other drugs.
Not the easy or cheap solution but as a last resort........

I hate how for 21 years of my life I was fine with no allergies, then 22 hit and I thought I had the worst cold in the history of colds. Damnit.
