Greatest Vocalist Of The Past 3 Decades?

I recently got into an interesting discussion on this topic at work and wanted to see what other people thought. We were talking about the greatest vocalist of our lifetime and since all of us are in our early 20s we only went back to the 80s. One guy said Dave Matthews. I completely disagreed. I think he's an overrated spare, but thats just me. One guy said the guy from Savage Garden, but I couldn't have an opinion there because I never listened to them. I said it would have to be Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots. I chose him because I think he is the best all around singer i've heard come out of the 80s or 90s or even still. I think that his work with his band Stone Temple Pilots as well as his solo stuff proves that he can change his sound up any way at all. I'm just curious if anyone else has any input since i've been thinking about this for a few days. My other top choices would be Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, Huey Lewis and Phil Collins.

You know, I never really considered Elton John as being a prominant 80s and on vocalist, but he really is. Good one there Hercules, I totally wouldn't have thought to mention him.

Male vocalist, eh? hmm..... here's a couple off-the-wall ones:
Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers. Guess it depends on the style of music and octave range required. If anyone says Barry Manilow they get a 1-week ban. :D :D

If we are talking best vocalist I would say Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins or Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance (Lisa did the song in Gladiator, but you gota here the Dead Can Dance stuff.) Anyone that hasn't heard The Cocteau Twins should check them out.

For male vocalist I would give it to Stephen Morrissey of the Smiths or Peter Murphy of Bauhaus.

Ya, I like 80's alternitive Brit goth rock.

What do you get for mentioning Lionel and Kenny? :p

This question is too vague.. so many different sections of music to choose from.
Personally to me a "vocalist" means someone with an amazing voice and range thus this rules out 99% of rock/pop singers. I'd choose someone from an opera background.

Freddie Mercury of Queen had a voice that was unmatched.
Geddy Lee of Rush was also great.
Nat King Cole and Jim Reeves were of a different genre, but great voices nontheless.

On an international front:
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan from Pakistan
Lata Mangeshkar from India

And, I'm not too bad in the shower. Ha ha.

Mike Patton. Check out either the self titled Mr. Bungle album or California. Noone else that's been mentioned produces the phenominal range of vocal sounds that he does. Half of the music that you initially think is either processed or an instrument of some sort is his voice. I didn't notice that so much of the music was his voice until I got my B&W 802s set up properly. He'd only fall in the top 10 or so of greatest singers of the past few decades, but for vocalist he's my #1. Phantomas is a bit out there for me, and his solo stuff is virtually unlistenable, as are the things that he did with John Zorn other than Bungle. He didn't stretch his voice very often with Faith No More, but his singing on songs like "Easy" is great, and is far better than the original version. It's great singing, but for his vocal abilities, Mr. Bungle is it.

I understand that Freddy Mercury was in fact trained as an opera singer; that puts him in the 1%, i guess, and he would have to qualify as one of the all time greats.

Peter Gabriel for dynamics, passion, and great writing.

I think James LaBrie of Dream Theater is quite good. Extremely versatile and talented, as is the whole band.

Anyone else agree?

<--- Big Dream Theater fan. :D

Man, there have been alot of vocalists mentioned that I wouldn't have thought of. But i'm looking for opinions on more 80s and 90s vocalists.

For women, all time, Diana Ross when she was with the Supremes. For the last thirty years, Deborah Harry.

For men, all time, Nat King Cole, and Bono for the past thirty years.

I'd say Kylie Minogue, Witney Houston and Celine Dion are up there for female vocalists.

Kylie Minoque does NOT have a great voice/range. Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion..
I might have been harsh about the 99% thing, but from what I've heard LIVE, most rock/pop vocalists do not compare to opera or theatre singers. I'm not going to choose or suggest names, I haven't heard that many people live.. but I would ask not name people just solely based on cd recordings.. A studio could make ME sound good on a cd.. he he..

it's true... pop "singers" are usually just faces for posters...
listen carefully, when do you hear their voices unfiltered and distorted anymore, without overpowering "background" or "accompanying" music?? never. it's 'cause people like Britney Spears (and her barbie doll look alike wannabies), the N*Sync guys, Back Street Boys can sing no better than your average schmoe (like me... actually, i pride myself on my range... maybe with a voice lesson or two and a lot of plastic surgery i could make it too AHAHAHAA!!)

Whoa...wait a minute guys, lets not trash Kylie Minogue. She has many fine qualities, her voice is simply not one of them. I just can't put my finger on it, but for some reason I still like her videos.

she's too old for me, and looks aren't everything anyways... and videos detract from the music... :p

billy corgan (who was mentioned earlier in this forum) is a mediocre singer, but i have a lot of respect for SOME of his work...

Last 3 decades... Hmmm, I guess I was misled by the fact that people were mentioning Nat King Cole and a number of older singers.
