Gas price increase causing food deprevation!

On the news tonight, they inteviewed a woman who said she has to cut back on food for her and her daughter becauce of the rising gas prices...

This woman was like 5'3 and was probably 4' wide :p

Actually at the supermarket the food that makes you fat (pasta etc) is a lot cheaper than the skinny food (vegetables). I guess I only feel sorry for the people who didn't vote for Bush.

Pasta does not make you fat. Eating shitty makes you fat.

Furthermore, ANY meals made from fresh ingredients from the supermarket are MUCH more inexpensive than fast food which is what most people eat these days because of thier busy lifestyles.. (yet somehow the average american watches 28 hours of TV a week). So for the $30 bucks you spend on one meal for a family of 4 at McDonalds, you can make 2, maybe even 3 meals for the same family by cooking at home. Unless you're buying alot of pre-made items or junk food.

Pasta does not make you fat, lack of excercise makes you fat. I am an athlete and I eat pasta very often to carbo-load for sporting events and training as it can give an increased amount of energy. I am in very good shape and not fat by any stretch of the imagination and probably eat about 5 lbs of pasta a week. Hell I am not even convinced that eating crappy makes you fat, I have a friend (32yrs old)that eats nothing but junk food, doesnt every work out (although he plays soccer in the summer) and is ripped and maybe 4% body fat. The trick is calorie defficeincy, burn more than you eat and you wont be fat.

Ever read the info on ramen noodle soup. Heart attack in a bag.

But, I agree that pasta, on its own, will not make you fat..butter sauce, "bad oils" fatty sauces yes.

On the other hand, studies have shown that a lot of people with money issues, or low incomes eat a very poor diet.

Here is what I do not get, maybe our younger members can help me. With the focus on "extreme" sports and the like, why ar our children so fat? Mine are little sticks, but the news does say we have alot of fat kids.

Because everyone wants to *watch* extreme sports, not play them.

You'd like, totally have to get off your *** or something then.

Yep, and also people like to watch them stoned, and that leads to munchies which don't help out either.

exactly

a lot of kids dont actually do anything but watch tv or play video games or what not. the people you see doing those extreme sports is a small percentage.

with the eating of less healthier foods, and the reduction in physical activity, kids are just more prone to being fat. when i was younger, my father used to force me outside for at least a couple of hours a day to play or burn off energy or whatever. it didnt matter how cold or hot it was outside, we had to do it. i do that now even (maybe not 2 hours, but i go out a bit everyday for even at least a walk), and i admit i eat the fat-inducing diet, yet im as thin as they get.

Or Splenda, which is a chlorinated hydrocarbon like DDT, or Dioxin (Agent Orange), or a number of other pesticides . http://www.truthaboutsplenda.com/

Well it should be ok anyways because the FDA has approved putting pesticides in your food without needing a label for it at all anyways.

Stivia all the way.

Anyway you know what they say about Chinese food and Italian food right?

5 minutes after eating Chinese food you're hungry again.
5 minutes after eating Italian food. You're fat.

I love how people just say "pasta makes you fat" as if it's the gospel and should be obvious to anyone. They are too young to remember back 20-25 years ago or maybe they have forgotten. At that time, it was "fat makes you fat", and the ideal was to consume a larger portion of your calories from complex carbohydrates. Fat was evil and over the next generation the store shelves would become crammed with items bearing the "Low Fat!!" label. Didn't matter that they contained extra sugar, starch, salt, and various synthetic atrocities. And the U.S. got fatter. This also correlates with Soybean Oil becoming omnipresent in the American diet - something that was not used until relatively recently.

Now carbohydrates are the evil thing and over the last 5 years or so the store shelves have become crammed with items bearing the "Low Carb!!" label. The real danger lies in the sleight-of-hand that the food chemists perform to develop these modern miracles so that we can eat a "low-fat" "low-carb" cheesecake instead of having a reasonably-sized portion of pasta or rice with olive oil and fresh veggies -- food which been part of the human diet for ages, but is now shunned because it has *gasp* carbohydrates and *shriek* fat.

Lol, I suppose the next "evil food component" will be protein; that's about all that's left to expunge.

its all about a balance for me, Im not one of the lucky people that can eat anything and never put on a lb.

I dont cut my self off from fast food, i like to go out and have a good burger once in a while or french fries...ect but I dont do it everyday for each meal. I also try to stay active, that comes pretty easy as my night job is valet parking. But I also like to get out and run cross-country or bike, ect.

I am 5'10" and used to weigh 250lbs peak, when i was 14/15. I got tired of it and decied to make a change, i started walking 30 mins every night, eating better (mostly just eating better snacks, but also cut back (NOTE: NOT ELIMINATE) on fried stuff). simply get some physical activity and eat a balanced diet. Its not easy...it takes work, but its far from impossible.

You can argure that we all have different metabolisms, and thats true, but if you work on being health....youll get to within 10-20lbs of your ideal weight, all these people that are 30, 50, 80+ lbs over their ideal weight just want to blame other things for their problem.

I went from 250lbs to 145-150 in about 18 months, it wasnt hard, but I had to use my brain and also put the time/effort in. I am now much better off.

that means:

1 gallon (US) = 3.785 Litres
current gas price ~ 101.9/Litre

Price = $3.86/Gallon (Canadian)

Exchange rate = 1.212500

Price = $4.68/Gallon

Ok, so we are paying almost 5$ a gallon here and people in the states are worried about $2.75?!?!?!?!

damn, i gotta move

It was a quote from a bad movie

haha yeah with all the low carb and low fat stuff, they might attack protein and then maybe fiber, and then air. "Now with less air!" heh.

How about eating smaller servings. You don't need to stuff your pie hole until it's a thin mint away from bursting. How about also going for a walk or take up a hobby that you'll move around a lot or at least keep busy enough to not think about food.

It's not so much the actual price, but rather the increase. Last year it was about $1.70. So everybody has nicely balanced books and they are getting along fine, when BUMP, fuel prices go up and suddenly your fuel bill eats through your disposable income and into your mortgage payments

That's what the 2/3 of Americans are complaining about.
