After doing a bunch of reading about it, I decided to pick up Fuel for the Xbox 360 sight unseen, and it has turned out to be a GREAT game. Anyone who is interested in arcade-style offroading games with HUGE fully-explorable maps absolutely needs to at least give this game a rental. The reviews for this title really belie its greatness - I would easily place this game among some of the gems of this generation. It's a shame a lot of people will miss it simply based on reviews.
Basically, it's a post-apocalyptic world where most cities have been destroyed or at least turned to rubble, so obviously everyone starts racing! (Hey, I never said it had a good story) The map actually holds the Guinness world record for being the biggest map ever to appear on a console game (at over 5,500 square miles). To put it into perspective, I'd say it's easily 5x bigger than Test Drive Unlimited - and that game took one full hour to lap the entire island. As soon as I got home with the game I drove East and took my time exploring some things, a half hour later, I still hadn't left the starting region (there are 19 regions total). It's VERY relaxing to just drive forever in this game.
The physics are wacky, but I find them fun. Vehicles basically slide all the time, no matter what - it's fun and drifty but still reasonably precise once you get used to it. It's especially fun when free-roaming, but I do occasionally wish it was a bit less slippery during actual races. Speaking of things I'd like changed, the only actual issue I have with this game is that the AI is quite wonky. A lot of the time, you can win on the top difficulty without too much trouble, but other times it seems the computer decides you're never going to win the race so you have to resort to a lower difficulty setting just to clear the event. By never allowing you to win, I mean that the AI racers will actually be able to go WAY faster than your top speed, even in the same vehicle - it becomes literally impossible to compete (this is rare though).
I really think a lot of you guys would love this game, and that's why I'm making this huge post. Most people would see the 6 and 7 point reviews and write it off as another "average" racer, but I really think this game is something special. It's a pretty good racing game and an incredible exploration game. If you guys have any questions about it, let me know - Hope to see a few of you on Xbox Live!

I'd definitely put it up there with some of my best blind video game purchases ever. I can definitely see some people not liking it (it's much more about the huge world than the racing), but it's a solid 9/10 for people who love exploration. Hope you enjoy it!

The reviews are pretty horrid on it, saying the AI sucks ***** and the weather is heavily scripted and underwhelming
I don't know what game the reviewers have been playing, but I must have gotten a different one. It's definitely not a perfect 10, but I just don't feel its flaws detract from the game to the point of making a sub-7 game. I think a lot of you guys would be surprised how solid the game is despite its reviews.

It looked interesting, and I know Codemasters usually makes a good racing game, but reviews scared my away.
It's just published by Codies, unfortunately - the game was actually made by Asobo or something like that. I think the reviews are way off, but your mileage may vary. Definitely give it a rent or just buy it when it's cheap!
