I think "born on" date things are dumb....you have to think about how old it is to the actual today's date. Now, expiration dates are cool cause all you have to do is look at it and if it's beyond today's date, then you know.

When it comes to beer, it is irrelevant. They pastuerize commercial products to last a long time. Non pastuerized beer such as that from smaller breweries and brewpubs is best when new. Like Jason said, I really only care about dates on milk products.
