see never played city of heroes,

Played wow a few times before as well, never "beat" the game just capped out level and then basically stopped playing at each new expansion (in exception to the last one)

was just looking online at the DC Universe website, and they offer what I think is a good deal for subscription...A lifetime membership. I mean how many people have been paying 15 dollars a month for wow since it came out years ago. Might as well pay 200/135 for a lifetime membership (pc/ps3) if you plan on playing.

I'm going to just try one month right now but if its good I'll go ahead and pay the 200

My problem with it is that they already made a create-your-own hero MMO. Even if it is a better game, I don't think I'd play it.

well by that rational they already created a MMO all about fantasy creatures magic and up close combat weapons, but that doesnt mean another can ever exist, everquest I and II wow to name a few.

this is SOE's rip off NCSoft's Heros. It's SOE's desparate attempt to try to make something of their MMO games. It was rushed through development and released short of content. Max level is 30. the game came out last tuesday and by friday there were people at the cap. SOE is trying to get their microtransaction payment scheme proliferated throughout all their MMO's and this one is intended to shoulder the brunt of it. The characters in game are purposefully limited on design and creation so that you have to pay to really customize your toon beyond the base.

i have a friend who recently left SOE's EQ2 dev team because of how radically SOE is changing their way of doing things. She'd been there since EQ1. I'd recommend not playing DCUO simply because you will be incredibly disappointed in the complete lack of content and then aggrevated at the fact that if you want to do anything, you will need to make "micropayments" to get access to the major stuff. The micropayments are on top of the standard subscription fee, btw.

Just read an article to contradict the micro payment thing

http://playstationlifestyle.net/2011...-free-updates/

it states that there will be no extra charges for extra content in exception to possible future expansion packs.

The game feels really well polished for a just released MMO, and yeah the downside is the low level cap right now, Ive only been playing for a few hours and am at 7 with ease and will most likely hit the 30 mark in a week or two at my rate.

EDIT: as of right now I am still really enjoying the game, there is a fairly large amount of start up power combinations. I will most likely play this for some time, at least till knights of the old republic comes out.

understand that Smedley is first and foremost a saleman. he's going to tell you everything you want to hear to make you feel good about your (potential) purchase. Being an ex-EQ2 player, i've see exactly what he has said and then completely gone 180 on and done the complete opposite.

You don't have to believe me but i know one of the devs who was on the "large team who cranks out content" and i can tell you that the only thing that the "large dev team" is cranking out is microtransaction content. it's also not a "large team" and is insinuated. I've no doubt that DCUO is a decent game in its own right. But don't expect ole Smed's word to be anything more than a fart in a wind storm. He once swore on the EQ2 forums that EQ2 would never... at any point ever go to a "Free to Play" model like so many other mmo's have... guess what... yea... it has. Not entirely, no. The subscription servers do still exist, but... and this is something else my friend told me, SOE created an entirely new F2P server. To do this though, they yanked the ENTIRE dev team from both DCUO and EQ2 to make it happen. This in turn cut short further content development for DCUO (which is why level cap is 30 not 50) as well as pushed back the release date on EQ2's newest expansion and even then, the expansion will be released incomplete.

Smedley has the integrity of a "Buy Here / Pay Here Used Car Salesman". Don't take what i've said here as a mad player telling everyone to boycott SOE. I'm just letting you know what i was told by a former employee who left because she was tired of how SOE has changed its approach to MMO game development and warning you as to what to expect to happen in less than 6 months. The "Station Cash" (affectionately known as Smed-bucks) button i know exists on the UI. It's empty at the moment because the content hasn't been released but rest assured, it's indeed coming. Like i said, you dont have to believe me but i gain nothing by lying to you.

Sony has a history of deceiving customers, I wouldn't be surprised.

Oh god.... I now have no hope for the game. I didn't realize it was an SOE MMO. I played SWG for a while and it was a great game that went to **** in a fairly short time. They literally redesigned almost all of the game mechanics a couple of times. I'm assuming they don't do that with every game, but still not sure I'd want to deal with some of the stuff they decide to do.

Assuming you meant The Old Republic? Don't think there's another KOTOR scheduled for release.

here's a quote from the current spin master, Smokejumper (who has been dubbed SmokeBlower for obvious reasons) of EQ2's official forums.

Quote:
"EQ2 is not a "free to play" game, so microtransactions are unlikely to ever have the "front seat" role that they have in F2P games" - SmokeJumper - 4/20/2010
Here's Smed's quote about EQ2 and RMT as well:

Quote:
I've been a regular lurker on this site for a while but I wanted to step in here and dispel something that's just plain not true - I don't have my name highlighted here, but anyone that doubts it's me can email me at jsmedley@soe.sony.com and I'll happily reply.

We aren't going to be allowing RMT in any way, shape or form on the non-exchange enabled EQ II servers. Period. End of statement.

In any event, I wanted to stop in and at least set the record straight - you aren't going to be seeing RMT allowed on the non-exchange enabled servers.

John Smedley
President, Sony Online Entertainment
to clarify for those not familiar, the "Exchange Servers" in EQ2 were 2 servers that SOE created that actually allowed people to purchase ingame items for real cash, regardless of what the item(s) were, from other players. As an example, if for some reason i wanted to become a tradeskiller and had no desire to go harvest the necessary raw materials and didn't have the ingame funds necessary to buy the materials, i could pay KonanDude 50 cents per stack of whatever, through an ingame transaction process. SOE kept a "small" percentage and the rest was dropped in KonanDude's bank account.

Guess what... RMT exists all ALL servers and has now since i believe year end 2008.

For cold hard cash you can buy anything from ingame fluff like clothes and armor skins to mounts (like horses, wargs, etc for your toons to ride and even items that help boost your xp gain (10, 20, 50, 100%) and so on. This is **** Smedly promised wouldn't ever "in any way, shape or form" appear on the standard servers.

So, don't believe anything you read from ole Smed. ever... in any way, shape or form. ROFL
