I am going on a trip to Scottsdale next week and have decided to rent a "fun" car instead of the corporate Tarus.
Any suggestions on what will give me the best approx. comparison to the new RX-8 in terms of size, power, feel, etc.?
My rental options are:
350Z
Boxster S
911
Corvette
BMW Z3M
I realize that these are all very different cars from the RX but would like to get a feel for the size and driving dynamics since I have been driving my '95 Volvo 960 so long that I have forgotten what a real sports car feels like. It has 14 years since I had my '79 RX-7 but I am still dreaming and anxiously awaiting my 2004 RX-8!

well since u already know wat a rotary drives like, and all the other cars in there are probally out of ur price range if u were to buy them.... try out the 350z. Unless u've completely ruled that car out as one u would buy then just go for the 911 or the vet and have some fun.
The 911 of course. The handling of the Z3 doesn't come close. The corvette is to big, the nissan to heavy. The other porsche will do too but it is a cabriolet.

I'd go with the Vette or the Z3. Preferably the Z3, if it's the 3.0
I don’t know about the USA but in Europe the standard 911 carrera is RWD. The carrera4 is the AWD version. I like the Vette but the Z3 is terrible. It looks great and has a wonderful 6 cylinder, however the handling is bad, definitely not as good as the 330.

The standard 911 Carerra (coupe/convertible) is RWD. The (more expensive) Carerra4 is the AWD version. The high-end 911 turbos are also AWD, unless you shell out the really big bucks for the 911 GT2.

Ha thanks man, I already was affraid that you had to do it without the RWD 911 in the USA. The RWD is still the best 911 IMHO.

I'm also surprised no one else picked the Boxter S. Similar hp numbers and weight. The Z3 does not handle as well in its current suspension setup. All the other cars are either too eavy or too powerful.
I don't know any big car rental company that would have ANY of these vehicles available (my company limits me to Hertz or Avis). Good luck on getting anything better than a 6-cylinder Mustang.

How come there is no "none of the above" option? I'm not trying to be a smartass, but none of those cars are very similar to the RX-8. Nothing really is, which is what makes it so cool.
Anyway, if you find a rental company that offers those choices to you, I'd be very surprised. There are a few (very) high priced rental places around Toronto that will rent you a Ferrari for a day, for example, for $900+. BMW Z3's, Boxters, etc. are available, but you could rent about 15 Taurus's for the cost of having one of these sports cars for the weekend.

Guys -- you need to live a little -- these cars are available in most major cities and they are more expensive than a typical Taurus -- but once every blue moon they can be a fun diversion.
National Car Rental in Phoenix has some of these vehicles -- Phoenix Rent-a-Vet has the Porsches' (and Viper, Jag, Hummer2). Link is www.redhotcars.com
I was leaning towards the Boxster S or the 350Z. Boxster is $269/day and the 350Z is $149/day. Would really like the 911 $349/day but I think it is probably too much power to be a useful comparison.
I have decided to get the RX-8 -- on the waiting list already. My other choice was the soon to be released Volvo S60R. I decided on the RX-8 because I just can't get rid of my longing for the rotary power! Even though I can afford a much more expensive car -- none seem to drive my internal passion like the RX.
Can't wait for the Detroit auto show -- already have my room booked!
lol your 15 you should be worryinga bout school and what your going to do after college. I work hard everyday. Just keep pluggin away and baggin those tampons. But I suppose its normal to feel that way I felt like that when i was 15. hrmm when is your birthday when you turn 16 you should get a better job.

Not to mention that the S60R will suffer in hot weather (read: turbo), and it's AWD
Husker, Welcome to AZ were happy to let in any rotorheads, I work in Downtown Scottsdale and drive past Rent-a-Vette everyday, they have some pretty nice cars sitting out there. If you're a single guy go for the boxster chics love them and the convertible will be perfect out here, the highs are 85-90 degrees and it is absolutely perfect. If you like to ride you can also rent Harleys or you might find a sportbike if you prefer.
I hope the weather is nice - would hate to rent a great sports car and then watch it rain for 3 days. I do have a house in AZ and go down 4-5 times a year -- have never rented one of the fun cars however -- maybe the RX-8 will be on the rental list next year!:D
My biggest concern is -- will my golf clubs fit in the 350Z or the Boxster? I do have two small children (but they are not going on this trip :D ) so the RX-8 is perfect as my "family-friendly" sports machine!
PoLaK, I got my '79 RX-7 the day I turned 17 (1983). Believe it or not my parents thought I should get a Camaro:o ?! In fact I turned down a brand new Camaro for a used RX-7 and never regretted it for a second -- even though my parents thought I was crazy. Fond memories cruising Boulder CO in college with 8 guys crammed in the RX! Even with the rear seats, the RX-8 won't be that kind of people-hauler without the hatchback.
