Recently my mom was looking for a cheap laptop for just emailing and internet use. i 'd seen the eee pc a little and i just have to say that it is pretty awesome. its tiny as hell and its pretty simple and straight forward. the only some what issues that i kinda have is the keyboard is small and there is only 2gbs of storage built in. the linix Os built in is fairly nice and if you reall/y want you can install Xp. Not bad for $300 + $30 for a 8gb sd card.
anyone else seen these things before? i love it for 300

They are coming out with a larger version that runs with a passively cooled CPU (no fans) so I'm waiting for that one. Will make a good laptop for my son.

<3 eee pc. sadly, it couldnt fit my needs, but i seriously considered getting it just cause its soooo cool. (and i can probably deal without gaming the few hours im at school.)
Hey guys, I'm digging up an old(ish) thread here. My current laptop is starting to show signs of old age and I'm very seriously thinking of picking one up. Anyone have experience with the 900s or 901s?
I can pick up a 900 20g for $400, and the nearly $600 price on the 901 just doesn't seem worth it even though the specs seem much easier to live with. Does anyone have any experience and/or insight into which I should pick up?
Oh, and also - never check one of these things out unless you want to buy one. I was thinking of picking up a regular budget laptop, but the guy at Best Buy unboxed a EEE for me, and now I must have one.

The 901 has the Intel Atom processor. They may have also added bluetooth to it. It's hard to keep up with Asus, they're rolling out eeepc variations like they're going out of style. The 900 uses the same CPU (intel mobile) 900mhz underclocked to 630mhz, just like the 701, but you can fairly safely "right" clock it back up to 900. I run mine closer to 800.
You're going to run XP or Linux on the 900. I ran Vista on my 701 for about 6 months and finally threw in the towel. It was functional but too restrictive disk space and cpu wise. The 901 would probably do a much better job with it.
If looking at the 701, know that the 7" LCD is probably its most limiting feature. You can run various hacked drivers that give you a scaled display (I was running 1000x600 for a while) but unless you have 20/10 vision you'll probably end up back at its native resolution 800x480.
There's also the "mod" route. I added a few mods to my 701. Internal USB hub, bluetooth, touchscreen, and an internal 16GB flash drive.

Well, I will definitely be running Linux, but not the native Xandros - my research is pointing me in the direction of Xubuntu or eeeXubuntu. I definitely want the 8.9" screen, as my eyes get strained pretty easily. It seems that the consensus is the higher resolution helps with clarity, which is a huge plus.
I guess my main question is how easy would it be to live with, say, a 900 20G "right" clocked and running Xubuntu? It's basically going to be used as my primary travel laptop, so I'd be running mainly internet applications. Also, are there any major drawbacks that I should be aware of?
Oh, and thanks for all the info

Given those dimensions I think you'll get years of use out of your 900. You'll want to buy a few accessories... DC/DC power supply comes to mind... beyond that I think you'll really like your 900.
Something to consider going Linux -- You won't be able to run apps like sCANALYSER, COBB AP Manager, EFIDude, etc. You'll also be relegated to GPS apps like RoadNav which is funcitonal but doesn't hold a candle to iNav iGuidance.
Guess ya can see what one of my primary uses is for my 701 If I could work out a way, I'd have my wife integrated into my car too ... hmmm :D
I completely forgot: http://www.eeeuser.com <--- any and everything you ever wanted to know about an eeepc

Yeah, I'm already running Kubuntu on my current laptop, so I'm used to the little annoyances and incompatibility issues inherent to Linux. I'd love to try hooking it up to my car, but I'm not sure I have the know-how on the vehicle side to ever make use of it. I'm kind of putting the blinders on and telling myself the EEE will only be used for basic computing tasks. (I'm sure that will last about a week)

I have the 7", but I'm going to pick up a 9" so I can get more of my tuning software real estate on screen.
It has been the single best computer purchase in my life.
What about the other alternative the MSI wind? It seems like a very viable laptop as well I have heard from 1 person who owns one it is comparable to the Eee pc.
I was able to get the $550 EEE for $400, so I never really looked at the MSI, which seems to start at about $500 up to $550 (even on discount sites). Though, yes, they are comparable. From what I can tell, the MSI seems a little bit faster, but they're also a little bit larger and a little bit heavier. But yes, it's quite viable if you need a little bit more power and storage in what is still a really, really small portable laptop.

I think pushing $600 is getting out of the range that the EEE should be targeting. Really, I think about $500 should be the ceiling, anything beyond that and I think people will start looking at how much more power they could get in a full sized laptop. Though, being the nerd I am, I'd probably still take the smallest and most quirky thing I can find.

Alright, I have no idea what Buy.com is doing with my computer. I ordered it on Saturday, it went to Warehouse in one day, and it's been parked on "In the shipping process" since then. Meaning it's just sitting around waiting to be shipped. Does it really take 2.5-3 days to put a sticker on a box and put that box on a truck? I want my 'puter, dammit!
EDIT: Okay, spoke too soon. They shipped it 15 minutes after I made this post. D'oh.

I just got mine in and have started to browse around...Everything seems great, the only thing I don't like is that the mouse buttons are hard to click - especially double click. It's nothing that can't be solved by just tapping, which is what I normally do anyway.
The keyboard is a bit cramped as I expected, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I just find myself losing track of the home row and overreaching on keys sometimes...but I've only been using it for about 10 minutes. I can already type reasonably quickly when my fingers are in the right place, so I'm sure with time everything will become second nature.
So far, it seems great for portable use, even with the "baby's first computer" Xandros interface. It just does its job without being complicated for Linux newbies - though I'll probably still jump to Ubuntu before long. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who just needs a basic and (very) portable laptop.

Well, I did it. I'm converting my 701 to a pink totamatic for my 14 year old daughter. I ordered a pink protector and pink leather case for it. This is the one that I added 2gb of RAM to, modded with a touchscreen, internal bluetooth, and an internal 16gb flash drive.
After looking around at all the different mini notebooks out there, i settled on the msi wind. i personally wanted a 10" screen and a usable keyboard, not to mention the webcam, function keys, and 5 to 6 hour battery life (streaming pandora at a starbucks). The one gripe I have about it? $550 is a good price to compete against the eee 1000H, but from looking at shelldude's link, the aspire one is $150 cheaper for an inch less display. when i purchased the msi wind, the aspire one was more expensive than now. However, the msi wind is very portable - i stuff it into my messenger bag now and carry it wherever i go.
for others that are shopping for the perfect mininote, check out gizmodo.com and read some of the comments ppl leave for the different mininotes. (apparently, aspire one > mini dell)
