hey does anybody have the apple ipod? if you do, could you tell me if it uses a program to interact with the computer or does the computer see it automatically like an external hard drive?

To get the music on to the ipod and have the ipod play it, you need to use iTunes. Which as people have said is free (and I think might come bundled with the new Quicktime).
To use the iPod as a hard drive you don't need any software for windows xp (not sure about 2000). you just plug it in and it looks like another drive. but songs you store in this manner will not be playable through the normal iPod interface. You have to use iTunes to transfer the songs. You also can't access the songs to copy from the iPod to your computer thru the hard drive interface. You have to use iTunes for that too.
I agree the iPod is worth it... so far I exported all of my CD's to it, that's over 1900 songs! Now I don't buy CD's anymore, I just go to the Apple music store online (through itunes) and pay for the songs I want.

I actually downloaded a whole CD from iTunes for $9.99 because I couldn't find it locally. Turns out the band is from the UK, and the imported CD would have cost me $30!
here's a question, has anyone been able to sync correctly with Media Player 10? for the first time today, i plugged in my iPod with WMP10 open and it recognized it and asked me if i wanted to sync...i didn't let it in the event the two are compltely incompatible and erases the songs on my iPod
but it does read the folders on the iPod so maybe it will work

Do you have different music on WM that you don't have in your iTunes library? I believe it will sync regardless of what you have open, but I think it will sync to what's in iTunes. I'm assuming you carry the music on your iPod in mp3 format and not in aac format?

my iTunes library is completely organized while the music in my WMP is just all the MP3s i have on my entire computer...the ID3 tags aren't edited the way i like them...WMP can't seem to find the songs on the iPod but recognizes that it's a portable mp3 player...when i read up on WMP10 they said it wouldn't be compatible at all with the iPod because, well you know, Apple vs. MS
anyways, i was surprised it even caught the fact that i plugged in the iPod and asked me if i wanted to automatically synchronize...i think it would have erased everything on the iPod and uploaded all the mp3s on my entire hard drive...i'm not even sure it would even end up playing as the iPod puts all the MP3s in some sort of order within different folders...i'm not sure how WMP would place them on the iPod...
If you don't mind the DRM stuff, the Ipod is cool. Like others have said it only plays music placed on it by ITUNES. Also, it is computer specific, don't try adding songs using another computer. My sister was visitng for ten days and she downloaded I-Tunes, installed it on one of our pcs in order to buy an album and add songs to her IPOD, she ended up losing everything on the IPOD but the new album she purchased (DRM). The IPOD is cool looking, easy to use, and it sounds great, but be aware of its little quirks.
If your looking for an alternative, there doesn't seem to be anthing real close in terms of size and ease of use. Personally, I have an older Archos Media Jukebox 20, which works great, sounds great, but has poor battery life, is much larger in physiscal size than the IPOD, and has nowhere near the cool factor.
Actually, it's your operating system that recognizes the iPod because of the software you loaded in when you bought it. It should ALWAYS recognize your iPod, regardless of what other applications you're currently running.
What I did, and this is, in retrospect, completely extraneous, was to rip the CD in WM, then use iTunes to convert it to aac format for my iPod. What I should have done is left them all in mp3. When I got my iPod, I didn't realize you had the option of loading them in mp3 or aac format (didn't read the manual enough - too excited with my new toy to read!). So now I have the same 1900+ songs in aac AND mp3 format. Good thing I have a huge secondary drive.
No, I'd say you won't wipe out anything by syncing up your iPod whenever you want, regardless of what's open. I just sync'd mine now while typing this.
May I recommend this cool freeware for your iPod. It's very useful for transferring files from your iPod to another computer without having to install anything on that computer. Unlike other software, it sits in your ipod and is run from there. It also allows the iPod to be shared across a LAN too. http://www25.brinkster.com/carmagt/SharePod/

I love my iPod. I have the card adaptor for it, so I can download photo's from my camera and then onto the computer later. I don't do winblows, so no WM to deal with. iToons handles all my music.
