Reported by several new sources and witnessed by thousands of people hundreds of miles apart.

A mysterious light display appearing over Norway last night has left thousands of residents in the north of the country baffled.
Witnesses from Trøndelag to Finnmark compared the amazing sight to anything from a Russian rocket to a meteor or a shock wave - although no one appears to have mentioned UFOs yet.
The phenomenon began when what appeared to be a blue light seemed to soar up from behind a mountain. It stopped mid-air, then began to circulate.
Looks computer generated to me, but with several sources and witnesses its pretty weird.

Within seconds a giant spiral had covered the entire sky. Then a green-blue beam of light shot out from its centre - lasting for ten to twelve minutes before disappearing completely.
The Norwegian Meteorological Institute was flooded with telephone calls after the light storm - which astronomers have said did not appear to have been connected to the aurora, or Northern Lights, so common in that area of the world.
The mystery deepened tonight as Russia denied it had been conducting missile tests in the area.
Fred Hansen, from Bø in Vesterålen, described the sight as 'like a big fireball that went around, with a great light around it again.'
sweet, i know you like it. my friend drops kicks me in the face. it hurt at the time, but a really awesome scene. ill email my Game Master at our Dungeon and Dragons club.
If you never here from me again, it's because I posted about this. But in all seriousness i'd love to here from an rx8 owner in the area cause our news is clearly not aware/or care about it.

Yeah, it looks like too many sources to be an entirely computer generated hoax. Best guess I Have seen is a test with a massive electromagnetic source.
The rest are just silly. "Trolls"? Everyone knows that trolls can't fly.
From www.spaceweather.com
I think it's the Russians trying to control the weather.
Or, a new kind of Bat Signal.

WTF kind of bat is shaped like that
I think the most logical assumption I have seen so far is an electromagnetic test, probably by the russians. Why? Because it's up there and easy to blame them.

Russia has a decent track record of testing in the arctic ocean off their northern coast, and the western part of that could certainly be visible from Norway's northern edge, especially something getting shot fairly high up and bright.
Edit:
Several of the links alnielsen just posted have a varying story that could be applied to a missile self destructing. Not an instant explosion, but tumbling out of control, spewing fuel or another chemical, that may or may not be getting ignited, before exploding. Plausible.

The site of the phenmomina was Harstad, Norway. This is on the northwest coast of Norway. That missile would have had to come from a submarine and NORAD would have had a track on that.

Agreed. Doesn't mean that NORAD would call up CNN and let them know
Just saying that it is a plausible explanation. Electro magnetic device or storm is another plausible option.
Sending this over to Mythbusters to see if they can duplicate it...
Edit:
Then again, over the water, it could have been fired by the US or any other country with submarines capable of firing ballistic missiles, in which case the Russians are right and NORAD is clearly going to say nothing. Alot of options fit the scenario
Nevermind. Retracting all else. Found a comment that makes me a believer.
It's a gigantic overhead projector. Their slide was a bit fuzzy though.

On a serious note, these were in the comments:

It is not a hoax, such things happen regularly especially at, for example, Vandenberg AFB, California, where missile tests and launches frequently happen at dawn or dusk (see example http://farm1.static.flickr.com/25/45...8413eb.jpg?v=0). The particles of rocket exhaust spread out and form unusual colors (ice crystals refracting sunlight). It is clear from the video this rocket lost guidance and began to spiral out of control like this…
…but at a very high altitude. The exhaust then spread and quickly dissipated in the following minutes.

I belive the Russians now have confirmed that they had a failed rocket test-launch from either a submarine or a ship.

Obviously now that the LHC is up and running that was a test black hole.
