The tuner craze reaching the mainstream

With the weather warming up lately I've been playing some ball at my local parks. This means interacting with a lot of teens and 20 somethings... My car almost always comes up at some point. The stupid **** these kids say is almost mind boggling. The all know just enough to be dangerous, and to sound like complete morons if you know your cars. Often they start out by asking me if I got to"highway" which is where all the little morons go to race their slow riced out cars. After that they always ask me what I have done. I usually just randomly pick a few mods and they pretend to know what I'm talking about. This is always followed by something story about thier car or their friends car in which they grossly overestimate the horsepower they have and lie about the mods they've done.

The mods almost always include intake/headers/exhaust which according to them adds another 100 or so horsepower in their eyes. Today I got to listen to a story about a WRX with 400whp that has I/H/E. This is almost always followed by some story about how they beat some car that there is no way they beat and how they went 160 mph and outran some cop (they almost always pick that number for some reason). The other real common one is them going on and on about how some shitty spring kit they got makes their car handle like it's on rails.

Just today I had some kids going on and on about how the only true AWD Evo is the AMS Evo and that none of the others are AWD. They all know AMS for some reason and tried to tell me all kinds of nonsense about the AMS cars. I actually got my car tuned there and know a lot about their cars and have seen them in person a few times. Then I had some kid telling me how he put an Evo engine in his Talon (not possible) and has a whole bunch of Evo mods. That's the other one, engine swaps... I've had people ask me if I have a swap. What the hell am I going to swap into an Evo... Then I'm usually punished with more nonsense about the engine swaps they and all their friends have.

I've certainly run into the random idiot in the past but it seems to have reached plague proportions in the last year or so. Just about every kid I run into now knows just enough about cars to make himself sound really stupid.

Sorry for the rant, just had to get it off my chest and was curious if anyone else has noticed this lately

kids lying about cars is a ritual about as old as the automobile.

You're just in a situation to experience it more often.

When someone starts talking about cars and it's obvious they don't know anything I usually call them out on it and tell them to shut up and play.

i feel your pain.. i'm in the army and in my platoon alone i have 2 them.. one has an integra which is actually fast, i'll give him credit.. he put a lot of work into his car, even though i had to spend 3 months convincing him to get it tuned so his supercharger will work properly.. but he's got his head up his butt about how nothing is better than hondas and his car is the best car ever, yadda yadda yadda.. the other one claims to have a highly modified sti that his girlfriend bought him.. none of us have ever seen and he crumbles when pressed about what exact mods he's done to it..

Funny you bring this up last week I was at this Hookah bar and this Persian guy with a Yellow S2K pulls up in front of the shop and comes in. He has a HUGE GT Wing, CF Hood, and trunk on his S2K other then that it sounded/looked stock.

He starts talking to me about my car and it all goes good he doesn't seem too dumb. But then I asked him why he needed a GT wing on his car (it looked like a god damn park bench) and he told me cause his Honda S2000 has a Limited Edition Honda Supercharger in it which came from the straight from Honda. He said it was a $4000 option on the car and he is one of the few in the world to have it. I just started laughing and called him a bull ******* to his face. I asked him to prove it and show me his engine bay but he got a little lippy and left.

All in all people will lie to make themselves seem cooler to other people I guess next time he won't lie cause he might get his *** caught again,

"Then I had some kid telling me how he put an Evo engine in his Talon (not possible) and has a whole bunch of Evo mods."

Why not, the mitsibishi evo and eclipse, eagle talon and the plymoth laser all had the 4G63 in them. All had awd option too. And yes it is possible because some shops have done it in europe.

I'm sure the kid said that because it is possible but its stupid to do it, you can just upgrade the internals and turbo on the 4G63 thats not used in the evo.

We all run into kids like theve at one point or another durring our travels. I ran into one kid who claimed to use to own a Rx-8 but now "leases" a MS6. He had all these tuner stickers on the car PLUS all these VW stickers on the dash (I think it was durring their speed demon campaign). After I seen the VW stickers I couldnt take the kid seriously.

Myself I try to stay away from stuff I know nothing about but yeah again we all run into kids who know way to little but talk about way to much. I just find it entertaining when they start blabbing about knowing this that or the other thing then ask "A Rx-8 huh? So you got a V-6 in there right?".... then the normal reply follows and more often than not I hear "So you must get good gas milage....".

At least a V8 works.
Sometimes, simplicity is a blessing, especially for idiots.

Too much Fast and the Furious and too much Need For Speed.

My co-worker started bragging about his "Monte Carlo Racing Edition." So I say, "You mean the SS?" He says, "Nope, it's the V6 racing edition. I had my friend take off the governor."

So of course I see if I can make him sound stupid and ask him what he did with the governor after his friend took it off. He was like, "Oh man, I forgot about that! I guess he kept it!"

After that, I convinced him to go try and get it back so he could sell it on ebay.

The people who really **** me off are the people who know every detail of a car's name, but don't know a damn thing beyond that, and they say the entire name of the car in order to sound knowledgeable and to impress their equally moronic friends.

I saw a guy like this the other day. He was walking around with his 'posse' and saw my car, at which point he pulled up his pants a bit and exclaimed "Whoa, that's a Mazda Mazdaspeed 3 Sport!" I'm not sure what the sport was about, since sport and GT look the same - I think he just thought 'Sport' was part of the name, but hey, at least he got something right - even if it was an accident. I smiled and waved. As I walked past, the guy was raving about how it was 350hp and AWD. I wanted to cry.

Oh, and I remember a kid in high school insisted his automatic Accord was equipped with Sports Gear. I think it was just the 'L' gear selection.

I don't know about 400whp, but the sti's can get some very impressive numbers with just intake, turbo back exhaust, and the Cobb AP. well over 300 to the wheels, which isn't too bad considering they come stock with only about 230 to the wheels.

owning an evo back in 2003/2005 is different than owning an evo today.

No, I simply meant that ricer mods like CAI/Header/Exhaust/Stickers don't make huge horsepower but a V8 does.

Yeah, but they usually drift them the road and roll them pretty quickly, which at least keeps them off the roads, even if it destroys a perfectly good car.

Well, didn't want to go into long boring details, but I'll explain further. The Evo 1-3 engine will work but it's not really worth the hassle. Evo 4-9 won't work without an obsecen amount of custom work for various reasons. I'm not aware of anyone ever trying it. This kid told me it was from an Evo just like mine (Evo 8) and that him and his buddies got it from a friend that totalled his car and it took them a few hours to put it in
