RX-7 confirmed. Hallelujah!

The biggest Mazda news in a decade has arrived. The RX-7 is coming back. The news has come to us from TMR out of Australia. Word has come directly from my friend Nobuhiro Yamamoto who heads the Mazda sports car development and the Skyactiv RE program.

I'm SO excited right now. Enjoy:

Nice, but "Yamamoto says that the RX-7 will be a premium product, and will likely wear a pricetag that's higher than cars like the 370Z."

Really hope they can make this possible! I have my doubts though... if they really are going to use the 16X how are they going to get the fuel economy to be up to 2017 standards? I believe it's mandated to be somewhere around 36mpg on the combined cycle by 2016 in the US!

nice. Too bad they sound like its going to be priced higher than a 370z, which is already expensive. I was hoping for a FR-S competitor in terms of pricing and size. Perhaps its a transalation error. It would seem that the car would likely sell better if it went back to its roots (i.e. 1st and 2nd gen RX7).

More low end torque from a longer stroke and taller gearing?

if the car went back to basics then people would still bitch and complain that it didn't live to the older rx7.

Sounds awesome but the tone of the end of the article sounds like they are trying to price themselves out of the American market again like they did with the FD. As always, everyone that has ever owned an FD will be disappointed at the lack of da bewsts. I still hope it comes to fruition. I should be able to afford one by then.

well official announcement is a GOOD thing.
So semi direct injection, 16X engine.
I bet it will be hard for the aftermarket to boost this.......
500rwhp will be the norm for performance cars by that time--thats another 5 years!!
Too far ahead for me --hell i will be almost 70 yrs old
fail.
If they dont boost it --it will not compare as to what will be out there.
Flame suit on

But they don't caaaaaare about power. It will be sooooo lightweight! Totally worth Corvette money!

You would need to hit Elise territory before it would begin to keep up with everything else. A base Camaro or Mustang will be at least 350hp by then, if not 400. The rotary be strugglin'.

Screw ricers and poor bastards, they ruined enough rx8s and fc rx7s already.

They can be expensive as long as it's justified. I just don't want a rerun of the mid 90s. More and more unnecessary tech and rarity driving prices into the sky. I can already see it happening with the Evo. The price has crept almost $10k and new ones are starting to sit on lots around here with dealers asking almost $40k.

All that said, I would still consider one.

All of the cars of that era crept up toward $50k as they added more and more electronics that current owners curse today. HICAS says it all.

5 years is plenty of time to announce the cancellation of said rx-7

Mazda, like other company's that already have, need to put out an all electrical car to throw off the fleet average mpg.

CAFE standards only apply to US markets. A small slice of a manufacturer's overall sales figures.

Can you imagine, more power than the FD at 2600 lbs? If it has the looks, handling, reliability and fuel economy, they will have a winner.

50th Anniversary of the 67 Cosmo is a big deal to Mazda. They will do it right.

given Mazda's lack of true trucks and SUVs and their fuel economy improvements on their mainstream models, I doubt an RX7 with fuel economy figures of ~25/32 would materially impact their fleet average.

OVER 9000!

Oh wait, that's the redline?

Considering the rotary stigma (at least in the US) and the fact that the Z can already be optioned into the 40k+ dollar range, I'd be shocked to even see it sold in the US.

If it is then great, and maybe Mazda is content with a (very) low volume halo car.

Dig up a neutral switch/sensor so I finally get rid of my p0850 code and I will test that famous customer service.
