Return of the 3 rotor racing rotary!!! (New 20B Renesis announced)
Mazda has announced a return to top level racing, and will be building and supplying an all-new, Renesis-based 20B 3 rotor engine for the LMP-2 class of the American Le Mans Series!
Details in this announcement
The 2 litre, 3 rotor 20B Renesis is expected to put out over 400 hp. Forget the 13B, imagine getting one of these new 20B Renesis engines to drop into an RX-8 ...!
Regards,
Gordon

You know that's kind of interesting, since the RX-8 LM race car in GT4 has a 3-rotor engine, but has Renesis plastered all over the exterior of the car. I thought it was a mistake, but perhaps it isn't.

"On any given weekend, there are more Mazdas on the road-race tracks of America than any other brand of vehicle. Mazda's motorsport involvement even extends to the nation's premier road-racing circuit, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca."

Unfortunately, RN.COM knew of this story quite a while back, but we were not allowed to release details, but here is a little treat for you all:

If they're taking the renesis into racing, then the rotary may have a new lease on life. Looks like the 7-year plan I talked about elsewhere may be a go. The RX8 has to survive 2005 and 2006 for the RX7 to come out. I think 2005 is critical because I can sense sales falling already. They'll need to minimize damage for 2005. It'a war of attrition starting now.

No one ever said a 3 rotor Renesis was impossible to build. It was stated that it was impractial to build for street use though. You'd better start to feel really lucky about your gas mileage now if one does hit the streets.
I think this is great news. I really want to see the port layout. I just can't believe that they'd run the center rotor with a siamesed exhaust port on both sides. I also believe that this will be a 4 port based engine rather than a 6 port based engine. A new center plate with an auxillary port would be difficult. There's no need for it anyways as race engines are built to run within a certain fairly narrow rpm range. Will this be only a side port engine or will it be a combination side/peripheral port? Will it be a bridgeport? Questions, questions, questions... I don't think we'll se the inner layout for a while yet but I hope I'm wrong. A simple picture of it's existence would keep me content for a while.
As cool as this is going to be and as cool as 3 rotor engines sound, nothing sounds more aurally stimulating than the 4 rotor engine in the LeMans winning 787B. That was pure orgasm for the ears!
One thing that scares me about Mazda's return is that they will do too well. This may sound strange but in the past, everytime a rotary would win, they'd restrict it out of competitiveness. Mazda tried for many years to win the 24 hours on LeMans and they actually did in their class in the '80s but the only overall win was in '91. The next year they really restricted the engine no longer allowing variable length intakes and the next year after that the rotary was banned. I know it's back but how long will it be until they restrict it again?
It's good to see some new rotary racing life back in Mazda's blood again.
