It says the Evo MR will embarass a Mazda RX-8 around the track. With 285hp and 295lbs torque how can they even compare the two? I see no mention of the STI. I wonder if it will embarass a S/C or Turbo Mazdaspeed RX-8 around the track?

That's nice. But you know, I'd still rather have my 8, or the NSX, or the 350z, the other cars mentioned in the article before I drive an EVO. But to each his own.

My favorite part of the article:
My best bet was the baby-faced engineers who stood in matching uniforms, no doubt making their first trip into the big city. But, it turned out, they were very tight-lipped, saying only, "Fast car, very fast. Maybe too fast for you, heh heh heh."

The Mitsubishi Evo. was one of the cars that I looked at before I chose the RX8. Bang for buck it is probably one of the most compelling cars out there, made even better now with the MR model. They were giving several thousands of $ off MSRP too. If pure performance #'s are what drive you, or the ability to fix up the car then the EVO MR makes a lot of sense, but it does have it's shortcomings. It's interior is one of the worst I have seen in a long time, even worse than the Mustang that I had. Everything in there just reeked of plastic & cheap. Although it did have good leg room in the rear seats. Second, it's just the look of the car. From the outside it just screamed econbox, and I'm getting a bit older but I couldn't get away with that Ricky Ricer look. If I was about 10-12 years younger, maybe. I wanted a car with a nice interior, and I think the RX8 is way better than the EVO (or the 350Z/G35, S2000 that I considered), and that is fun to play with on the track, even if it is a few seconds slower on the track. I wanted a car that looked great on the outside, and I think the RX8 get's way more looks than the other cars. I will fix up my car to have decent performance. To me if the max potential of the RX8 will bearound 300-350 hp with a SC or Turbo that is fine. If I want a 500 hp monster I would look at other cars.

I would most def take a NSX or 350Z over that crap and obviously take a RX8 over it because I have one! It's all performance and absolutely nothing else! No style, comfort, uniqueness! In my eyes that has to be one of the ugliest looking cars on the road. I guess that why they had to make it go so fast around a track because how else would they sell that piece of crap.

I've never been humbled by an EVO, but I still respect the sheer power and grace of the car. You have to admit, even 276 hp is wicked. 285 hp is insane, especially for something we consider an econo-box.
On another note, some racing teams in Japan are running EVO MR's in the Super Taikyu series. Some RX-8's have run, like NRF's, but they aren't having as much success as the teams here (SpeedSource).

FYI a version of the Evo MR just turned a 126.0 around Topgears test track. Which is .2 seconds slower than the Gallardo and faster than cars like a Porsche GT3, Lotus Exige, C6 Vette, etc etc. I think I can accept the boring/ugly interior...
By the way Shelley, I beat you by a good 3 mos.

The suspension is punishing though. I suspect the Evo driver will be grimacing a bit in between maniacal grins
Still, no one is paying me to win races, so simply being the fastest and meanest car for the money isn't enough. I absolutely love driving the Evo. I just don't think I want to own one.
And I agree with the the poster who pointed out that mentioning the 8 was a *compliment*, as it seems to have been suggested as the standard to beat regarding handling.

What time do you think the 8 would pull off at the topgear track if it had the same specs in the 9,000 Redline Rotary Engine with 280 HP, 295 Torque, Turbocharged, Tightened Suspension and AWD. I'm pretty sure it would blow that time away and many others! People really don’t look at the times, how the hell can a Rotary Engine with 238 HP and only 159 Lbs of Torque be burning around that Top Gear Track? Other cars, even some that we have beaten or came very very close to, have way more HP and way more Torque. Even some of them have AWD and the RX8 is still staying close to their times and even beating some of them too. Ahhhhh I love my RX8!

It seems Mitsubishi put a lot of effort to come up with the Lancer Evolution, especially as the company is going down the tubes. The car is fast as hell and should be lots of fun, but IMO I think they need to significantly improve the looks.

You simply do not buy an EVO or STI for comfort trips and Sunday drives with your Grandmother. It's built with one thing in mind and that's performance. So don't complain about the interior or its lack of amenities because if you do then it's not for you. Looks are also subjective. Many say it's ugly as sin as many complain about the 8 being ugly as sin. I wish I could get the warrantied EVO MR FQ400. I would not have a single complaint.

And no to AWD on the 8. To me that's like putting a piston engine in it IMO.

plus the 8 has a tendency to understeer a little bit (stock) already, making it AWD will make that worse, and ruin the weight numbers (read: make it slower). Adding a turbo will upset the front to rear balance and the car will not handle as well (look at the pettit rx8). Frankly to make the rx8 faster around the track starts with the suspension...take out the comfortable suspension and put in a hard racing suspension and rigidity upgrades to the frame (goodbye understeer), and to add a little bit more necessar oomph (it does need a bit) porting (when successfully accomplished and properly tuned not one or the other) will bring the rx8 closer to 270-280hp (torque will increase only slightly). and then only then will the car maintain its good balance yet be faster on the track...thats just my opinion though. (this is why i think a mazdaspeed version wont be SC or turbo, they'll keep it NA but find more power....because it is there!)
evo kicks *** btw, i wouldnt mind adding one to the garage

How about I take a Miata with 270HP and AWD and 2300LBS then I smoke your made up RX-8 oh wow! (Mazda did actually make 50 of these carsBTW, no radiator or oil cooler though it was for ice racing)
