Possible new IC engine design? Per Edmunds.com
Interesting news article per edmunds.com
WEST SUSSEX, England — British engineering firm Ricardo and a consortium of automotive partners announced a new research project to develop an advanced gasoline engine that will significantly reduce CO2 emissions while leading the class in performance and economy. Sponsored by the UK Department of Trade and Industry, the project hopes to validate the feasibility of a study conducted on the 2/4SIGHT engine concept.
The aim of the project is to deliver the 2/4SIGHT advanced gasoline prototype engine. The 2/4SIGHT is based on a pioneering design in which the combustion system combined with advanced valve train and control technologies will enable the prototype engine to switch between two- and four-stroke operation.
The innovative engine is based on a design that uses a direct-injection gasoline combustion system whereby the intake and exhaust ports, combined with the correct ignition and valve timings and the right changes in fuel injection, allow the engine to operate in both two-stroke and four-stroke modes. According to the feasibility study, the benefits include a 30-percent reduction in fuel consumption as well as reduced CO2 gas emissions, in compliance with the Euro 4 emission standards. The concept will also improve performance over conventional diesel engines while keeping production costs to a minimum.
What this means to you: If this is a success, the predicted demise of the internal combustion engine could be pushed off even longer.
