mp3 protege, mspeed protege, mazda3, or rx8?
i will be getting a car next year just to have fun. im thinking of gettin a MP3 Protege, MazdaSpeed protege, Mazda3, or RX8. i dont plan on seriously modding during the first few years of owning the car but i will after 3-4 years. i just want a car that i can have fun with during the weekends or on good days, or a car that i can work on and learn. i have my parents MPV and Infiniti QX4 to daily drive to school. i need a car that can seat 4 people and it needs to be manual (ofcourse manual for a weekend fun car ). which do you think is best for me? i have plenty of time to take good care of the car so dont worry about me not taking care of a rotary. i have learned from FC and FD owners in rx7club (the "evil forum"), so i basically know most if not all the maintinace for a rotary.

As an owner of an MP3, I can say it's a good reliable car that is cheap to keep- and can take any turn or handle any curve without having to slow down for it.
It is a handling orgasmatron. That is the car's purpose.
However, it can only muster 8.2 sec. 0-60 on a good day, and the ride is firm (especially for NYC- the MazdaSpeed version is a good deal firmer still)
It is also not as luxurious or comfortable as the RX, but we are really comparing apples and oranges. Suffice to say that the Protege is an excellent, practical car with lots of room, a huge gas tank considering it's mileage, and a big trunk to boot.
I've really enjoyed owning it. And it will cost you less than 20 grand. I'll part with mine for 19,500

edit: MP3guy: yeah i like the MP3 too, the amazing stock 280 watt sterio system woo!! i wont be able to do much "speeding" in NYC (ya know the traffic...and city blocks..), but i do plan on trying autocross thats why i said ill be modding after a few years. ride quality and how luxourious doesnt mean anything to me. a good sound system, sunroof is almost all i care about in the interior. ill be using the QX4 mostly for daily driving (can tackle any potholes and is pretty luxourious enough for me). i wanted a FC but it wouldnt fit me needs and its a pretty old car (20+yrs) and needs a lot of maintaince and repairs. things tends to break obviously.

I think the 3's are hot cars. Got my roomate to test drive one a few weeks back, and we both loved it. (almost got her to buy it, too ) Very comfortable, smooth, quiet, reasonably quick, and they have an interior that's as nice as the 8, which was a big selling point for me. Very nice cars all around.

yeah. i like the 3 also, but lately more and more people are driving around with it which makes it less rare. not that im saying i want a car no one else has. so far there are very little parts coming out for the 3 and i dont know about the future. i want a car that can handle well (the rx8). well, keep the feedbacks coming. very hard decision.

Unfortunately, the MP3 never came with a sunroof- there were no options with the car except for the all important trunk net, which yields another 5 miles per hour in the turns.
Mine is #420 out of 1000 brought into the USA.

To me it sounds like you've already sold yourself on the RX-8.
In the summer of 2006 you should have no trouble buying an '04 RX-8 for $18,000. If you look hard enough you can find them for under twenty now.
I drive a Protege5. The Mazda3 is a huge improvement over the Protege in refinement and the balance of the chassis. But it's still a front-drive car. The RX-8 has a totally different feel.
My gut would normally tell me that the front-drive cars would be much less expensive to insure, which could be important for you. However, because I'll be buying my father's car in about a year I checked with my insurance company. Turns out the RX will only cost $44 more every six months. The Protege is very expensive to insure given that it has only 130 horsepower (that feel like 110).

btw: i have also thought about the protege5, but it seems its too underpowered for me. my friend which wanted a FC (so did i) switched from wanting a FC to a millenia S, to a 99 cadilac sts, now he wants an E36 BMW M3 which i think is a little overkill for a first car eh? he knows fairly well about cars (almost as good as most tuners do) and have driven his uncles camero (400+hp) around a big lot. well keep the feed back coming! :D

I'll be trading in my RX8 next summer for something new. I'm only about an hour and 15 minutes from NYC. It's all yours next summer, and will only have about 22-25k miles on it. I'd sell it now, but there's no demand at all for RX8, so I'd get jack for it.
