Either one's a winner
Wow, they cut a 13.0s 1/4 mile in the STi.
Everyone is saying that the '06s have been slower. Guess not.
STi was only .4sec behind on the 1.5 mile road course. I'd like to see what would change if they put the Evo's Advans on the STi.

So close, looks like it's down to brand loyalty or a preference in looks...

hasn't it been like that for the last couple of years though......I thought I remember the 2004 comparison and 2005 comparison being the same thing.....too close to really call a winner either way.

It is pretty impressive that these two companies build two cars that perform in virtually identical fashion. I don't think I have ever read comparisions where the two cars have been that close in every respect.....year after year.

Yep, that's about it. It's the general belief (at least on NASIOC, not sure about evom) that the Evo is a better track machine (quicker steering, marginally better stopping, more predictable handling, better modability factor), while the STi has better street manners (softer ride, less lag with the 2.5L engine, nicer interior, that good 'ol boxer rumble, and is a marginally better straightline performer).

It's all preference. When I was shopping, I didn't have a preference, but Mitsubishi forced me into the STi when the local dealership was charging MSRP +$5000. I also find it interesting that Mitsu has brought over the MR edition (charging $3K more than an STi), but Subaru has not brought over a Spec C. I'd like to see what the auto writers think about the 320hp twinscroll motor vs the MR.

I'm sure there are probably a bunch of other cars that you can say are virtually identical. However, the difference with the STi/Evo is that these are the ONLY 2 cars in this segment in this country; nothing else is comparable so the closeness really stands out.

Very impressive. Every article I've read about these reads the same way in all the car mags. I'm sure there are plenty of Evos at camp Subaru when development and/or testing time comes and vice versa. I'm sure Subaru engineers know just as much about the Evo as Mitsubishi does and Mitsubishi knows just as much about the STI as Subaru does.

dead-on with what I've read in the comparos--probably the only difference to speak of but could be important to shoppers

They didn't offer you free gas for a year and tires for life like they do on Mitsu's advertised here.

This was almost 3 years ago when the STi and Evo first came out. Drove up to the Mitsu dealer (in my 2001 Z3 no less), they said: "No test drives without a $1000 deposit and you WILL pay MSRP +$5000". I said: "Bite me". Drove a mile down the same road to the Subaru dealer, got an immediate test drive, and said, "Ok, let's work out a deal". And here we are.

I also had a 3000GT previous to this and was real happy with Mitsu reliability or their dealer's service. That dealership has since been bought out and we no longer have a Mitsu dealer within an 80 mile radius.

Good move. Mitsubishi was arrogant and smug then with the Evo first coming over. Now they have to give away tires and gas...

You do realize that the MR has the EXACT same power as the other Evo trims (GSR & RS)? Not trying to pick on you or anything. I've actually seen everything from magazines like MODIFIED and SCC get it wrong to car forums like NASIOC and the STI boards, so I'm just making sure. I believe that in Japan the MR gets a slightly upgraded turbo for an additional 5-10hp, but nothing like that exists in the USDM. The Evo VIII's all had the same setup (aside from slightly bigger hotside in '05) and now the USDM IX's are all identical in terms of power. What the MR has is a 6 speed tranny, softer dampers and some other very minor things. Personally I think it's a bit overpriced but some people who buy into the whole "gotta have the top of the line" have bitten in hook, line and sinker. I just think that to wear a badge that stands for "Mitsubishi Racing", you should have little extra power over the rest of the model line. Not the case in the states.

Check google videos though. I think they put a Spec C against an FQ320 a few years back IIRC. That's more apples to apples than comparing the Spec C to a USDM Evo MR.

roud 2 as in 2nd iteration of the cars for the USDM. i prefer the stiffer suspension of the regular EVO and RS over the MR. if im going hardcore with one of these cars, Id rather go hardcore all the way.

FQ400 anyone? hehe.

I think the JDM MR "had" a more agressive increase in performance than just 5-10hp, but there seems to be a different "MR" edition in every different country it was sold in.

I am not entirely sure, but wasn't the MR edition discontinued in most countries except for the US? Or it could be the FQ400 that was discontinued.

The MR is more focused on throttle response and less laggy
