While you're talking 'old school', how about my first Mazda? I bought this RX4 coupe in 1974 from a dealer in Great Neck, Long Island. I had gotten the most recent issue of Car and Driver that featured the RX4 on the cover, and was so taken with it, that I went to the dealer to kick tires.

I offered to trade in my 1971 VW Beetle, and the sales guy said 'great', let's have a look at it. What he didn't know was that it had a 2,180cc motor in it with dual Holley carbs, no heater boxes, an equal length 4-into-1 exhaust, an aluminum paneled interior, race buckets, etc....

He looked at it and asked 'can you put it back to stock?'. I said that I could, and that weekend was a mad rush to reassemble the car back to stock.

Notice in the interior shot the 8-track player in the dash; the dealer mounted it inside the glovebox! Next to it was a fader control I made with a Watkins Glen Formula 1 badge. And note the oil pressure gauge in the console cobbled together well before companies made housings to house it.

It was the first 13B powered model in the country, and it spun an eccentric shaft bearing at 49,000 miles. Despite being out of warranty, Mazda replaced the motor with a remanufactured unit at no charge; I've been loyal to them ever since.

I still wish I had that RX4, but I sold it to my now ex-brother-in-law, who managed to get it stolen and stripped bare. Schmuck!
