At a recent dinner with reporters, Masahiro Moro—Mazda's new North American CEO—indicated that modifications to meet U.S. emissions standards would compromise the car's performance too much.

Concerns that the engine would not be sporty enough to match Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" image were responsible for previous delays.

Wow. This company really is in denial. There is nothing Zoom Zoom at all in your lineup full of 4 cylinder engines.

Let's just file this bit of news in the "Yeah, we already guessed at this several years ago" category.

drive the new CX-3, CX-5 or even the MX-5 and tell me those cars aren't fun as hell compared to their rivals.

on a side note: we've known this for some time, I remember having this talk with Mazda peeps @ SS but it is sad to finally see it said in public.
so much for me getting a CX-5 in SkyActiv-D
damn you VW
damn you to HELL.

Except the MX-5, of course! Not making this up, but I actually caught myself saying "zoom, zoom, zoom" the first time I drove a Miata - long before Mazda ever used it as a tagline. The MX-5 is the very embodiment of Zoom-Zoom:

"Since its inception in 2000, Zoom-Zoom has come to symbolize what a Mazda stands for – stylish, insightful and spirited…"

Besides, Driving Matters now.

Yep Charlie, said at the time of the VW emissions cheating that Diesels will be put back for 20 years in Passenger cars, I go as far to say now that is has permanently killed them off.
New Car buyers just wont take the disgraceful re-sale hit.

And yep, no Mazda diesels for North America.

In Oz we have had Mazda diesels (Perkins licence) for over 40 years (T series trucks, B series Utes, E series vans with a diesel mix).
Mazda Australia will no longer be importing the current and new facelift BM Mazda 3 diesel as they just don't sell, and VW has killed the consumer demand and desire here too.

The 2.2l SA-D in the Mazda 6 is very slow sales, the 1.5l SA-D in CX-3 is OK, but I see a full exit soon, chatting with my former (still working @ Mazda colleague) who also blames the Germans.

Really only Japan and Germany where diesel sales are acceptable.

Time for a Skyactiv petrol turbo (SA-GT) from the all new TC CX-9...

And it was never about emission/performance in North America with SA-D, was all to do with engine reliability as the first 3 models years of SA-D's (CX-5, Mazda 6) around the world were engine failing, Metal fatigue on diesel camshafts, rockers, pistons, plus oil level rising by fuel in oil pan from bad burn off with DPF, also engine oil needed replacing every 1,000 KMs or 600 miles, that has all since been sorted.

Mazda (MMC Japan) just did not want to risk bad publicity and the cost of failing engines in USA.
The SA-D's were all fully tested and past all emissions for North America (in Canada) until 2020, this passed a year before it was scheduled for launch release in NA, with No Urea injection, only a diesel particulate filter burn off.

this gen diesel is done. we'll see the launch of Mazda's HCCI "Sky Activ 2" gasoline engines long before we hear anything about diesel again. plus as Jedi points out they have to get a hybrid in production and sales in 2018 for the US market. no point in putting dollars into this gen of diesel engines when they literally have only two countries to sell them in...

great article found through the comments on the TTAC article

Engine Technology International - June 2016

"We'll be the first with HCCI and the last with BEVs. The last with autonomous too."

p.s.you can download the whole article as a pdf. nice. time to spend more reading time on that site
