Last night on Leno, all the commercial segments were devoted (or bought out by) to GM specifically for the launching of the HHR.
Lots of commericals with the HHR and from the types of commercials (which had goofy stories involving Andy Dick trying to work with GM to sell the HHR and ended up wanting one) it looks like it's aiming for the rice out completely types who want to do lots of add ons to the car.
In one commercial Andy Dick went and tricked out the HHR with stupid stuff like adding real redwoods with dirt in the back seat floor wells, a waffle maker in the dash, and an expresso machine as part of the shift **** in the tranny.
I was wondering...
1. For such a car lover such as Jay (who owns a couple of RX8s in his collection of over 40 cars), why is he promoting this car? I guess GM wrote a BIG FAT CHECK to the Tonight Show...
2. Why advertise the HHR on Late Night when most of the crowd the HHR is going after would still be at the bars, sleeping, or doing something else other than watching Leno?
3. Does Chevy think or want to compete with the Scion group and get a share of that crowd. Mind you the Chevy line has improved greatly and I like what is coming out of GM as of late (Sky/Solistice being my favorite). But WTF, who will really get this and trick it out?
These are my thoughts on this... what about you?

I think you are right about GM writing them a fat check. I have doubts that Leno gets to decide what commercials are played, otherwise I don't think he would have chosen a commercial scheme like that. Jay is a stand up guy(no pun intended) from what I can tell. He's got class and you can see that from his huge car collection. The HHR is not befitting of a guy like Leno in my opinion.

I think saying someone who likes to modify cars is part of the rice out crowd is inaccurate. People have been modifying cars as long as cars have existed. Go look at old 30's Ford hot rods. My dad used to mod out his 71 Mustang Mach I back in the day too. This car has a more nostalgic appeal type crowd that probably does in fact watcht the Jay Leno show.
All you need to do is go look at the popularity of the PT Cruiser, demographics that bought it, and what people did with those to get an idea what to expect with the HHR.
Really, with the way small cars are going, GM is not off base with this vehicle. It is an American interpretation of what a small affordable practical vehicle should look like.
Mazda has one too. It is called the Mazda 5. All small cars in America are headed this way. Next is the Dodge Caliber that replaces the Neon. It is the new trend and not a bad one.
Who the hell still watches Leno? There's something called Adult Swim that comes on and I hear it's good like hel ya good. I spelled 'hel' with one 'l' because that's how we do it in the e-world.
Anyway, if someone gave you a big ******* check to promote a piece of **** car, would you? I would. I would do it for my country.

You're completely right, but there is the encore Adult swim, in case you missed it. You can mix up adult swim with Conan, but Jay ain't that funny anymore. I guess you're safe if you're posting. You stayed at home, right?

Yeah I'm alive. What a ******* gyp. You can read about it in my world-famous bored thread that kicks so much ***. Hopefully I don't have to work this weekend or Monday because Judge Eckels told employers not to bring us back. Yay! It's SS4 for the rest of the weekend. And no, I don't apologize for the hijack. Bitch.
Leno hasn't been funny since 1998. Conan used to be funny when he had Andy and Masturbating Bear. In fact, I don't even hear much about Leno and his apparently awesome car collection. The only thing I ever heard was his Toronado which was switched over to RWD (the way it was supposed to be BTW) and had an LS7 or something of that magnitude in the engine bay.

Jay only has one RX8 which was given to him from Mazda on his birthday, he has another Mazda though its called the Cosmo (also a rotary and rare).

He got a Shinka from them, right? Wouldn't it be nice to get a car for your birthday? Especially a $30k+ car

I've no idea what a Shinka is, his Cosmo is the 1968 Mark II (L10B), the world's first rotary engine sports car.
The last Cosmo had the triple rotary engine, probably the only rotary I consider worthy of praise :
The only rotary you consider worthy of praise is the 20b? What about the engine in the 787B that won the 24 Le Mans? What about the Renesis, for it's size it makes pretty awesome amounts of power. Maybe I don't understand your argument, but I guess you're entitled to your opinion.

Adult swim is the shizzle. Family Guy all the way.

Like someone said...Leno has nothing to do with the commercials at NBC. GM smartly picked those time slots because maybe they wanted to use Leno's "car guy" status to make it look like he likes the car or supports it.
