I started a petition against cell phone drivers...

http://www.petitiononline.com/4545cell/petition.html

Driving to work this morning in rush hour traffic and pouring rain I notice the woman in the car next to me rambling away on a hand held cell phone. I was about 2 car lengths behind her (and in the next lane over) when all of a sudden I saw her drop her cell phone and then SLAM on the fuggin brakes lake baby Jesus himself had just run out into the road.

Nobody hit her from behind but 4 cars back somebody else got rear ended. I pulled over and gave the police my statement, including the license plate number of the woman's car that caused it all. She drove away after she picked her cell phone up off the floormat. Anyways, the cop said it was very helpfull.

So after lunch and talking with a couple coworkers I got to thinking that this problem with cell phone drivers has gone on for long enough. It's been at least 3-5 years now. I know probably every one of us has at least one story of somebody on a cell doing something stupid, annoying or dangerous while driving their car. I don't even wanna imagine how long I'd go to prison for if somebody on a cell hit my Evo. I think the punishment for beating somebody to death with their own cell phone is pretty severe.

I'm not proposing we totally eliminate cell phone use while driving, but the hand held ones need to go. These hands-free sets are relatively cheap. Even if people still drive poorer than normal on a hands-free cell phone, at least they have 2 hands to operate the car with rather than just one. So anyways I started a petition. If you feel like I do go ahead and sign. Maybe it will get enough signatures to make a difference. I'm so sick of this ish I'll try anything.

I hate cell phone drivers. When I was down in Houston I noticed that almost everyone talks on their cellphone and drives...how the hell do y'all put up with it down there?

I can't even talk and chew gum at the same time...

I signed :D

Yeah but for everyone who does something stupid with their cell phone maybe there's another 10 people who use it perfectly responsibly...like me.. so how bout a petition against stupid drivers period. Blame the person not the tool (well in this case the person was a tool :D)

I don't believe the 1 out of ten ratio. Everytime I am near someone using that damn phone they are always unattentive. Cell phones should be for emergencies. People carry on meaningless conversations while driving 70 mphs. Another annoyance is people using them around you. I was in the store and this dumbass comes near me tallking about nothing, cussing etc. Kids could be in there but people just don't care anymore. I don't want to hear your conversation. I could care less.

I've actually heard of studies that show that hands-free headsets are just as distracting as the typical hand-held phones. I think they SHOULD be outlawed for drivers while the vehicle is in motion. You shouldn't be dealing with "emergencies" while you're blasting through town... Pull over to the shoulder or stop at a gas station and make or take your calls... One less thing the rest of us have to worry about.

Angry

My dad was killed while jogging in a bike lane, by a driver who swerved while reaching for his cell phone. He had had his license suspended several times previously, for driving under the influence. This POS only served 6 months for killing someone who was minding their own business.

I'm all for cell phones being completely banned while driving. Around here (college town) you can't leave at all without seeing several people driving around on their phones. Add to this fact that college students are typically both terrible and aggressive drivers, and you can only imagine some of the situations I've found myself in thanks to these little gems of technology. I really don't see the need to be on your phone every waking second of the day, and I especially don't see why a phone call can't wait until you can make a quick stop to place a call. If I can do it, I'm sure everyone else can.

In Singapore, its against the law to hold a cellphone in your hand while driving.
You have to use a handsfree set if you absolutely has to talk.

I think the law made sense.

Women already drive bad enough even without distraction, and cant read maps, cant use GPS, (puts on flame suit ) now you put a cellphone in their hand and an equally talkative yapper on the other, thats an accident waiting to happen.

That's terrible zoom. I'm sorry.

Over the course of the last few months I've just finally said enough already. I don't care what people say...I know what I see with my own eyes and operating a vehicle while on a cell phone is dangerous. At best you're 50% of the driver you normally are. Why should that be everbody else's problem? Our politicians have failed us...again.

Thanks Steiner,

It's been almost two years, still have not gotten over the loss. Is it too much to ask that if you are driving, let it go to voice mail till its safe to talk. I just dont have much faith anymore in the justice system.

Thanks ranger. Zoom's story is one of about 8-10 testimonials I've come across in the last few days that makes you wanna light the state capital building on fire. Our politicians are asleep at the wheel on this one. Like most people I'm generally passive when it comes to getting involved in politics, but these ***** were elected by us to work for us and this is something that affects most of us on a daily basis. When is enough, enough?
