Hybrid mayham!

Looks like oil is on the up swing. Would anyone here buy a hybrid vehicle? If so, which one and why?

here's mine:

Assume that I will have a weekend car too.

That Lexus has my vote as well. Awesome styling, luxury, everything is perfect and it gets +30mpg, what more could you ask for?

I wouldn't buy any current production hybrid. The mark-up on them is so outrageous here, that it'd take gas being $5.00 a gallon to make it worthwhile. The Accord hybrid appears to put up good numbers power-wise, but it weighs nearly 500lbs more than a regular 2005 Accord.

I love hybrids, and had a Honda Insight a couple of years ago. The CVT transmissions are awesome. That Lexus would probably be my pick as well.

Sure I'd buy one. It actually came down to a choice between the Prius and the RX-8. Sounds odd to most folks; I just like cars that are made to be the best at what they do.

I also keep my cars a long time; the last one was 14 years old. So, almost certainly will be buying a hybrid next time. I think you'll have your $5/gal gas well before then. I imagine the majority of vehicles sold 14 years from now will be hybrid design unless some tremendous battery breakthrough makes pure electrics feasible (not likely). Fuel cells have an outside shot but a hydrogen infrastructure is nowhere to be seen, probably not until gasoline is too expensive even for hybrids.

Edit - note here is an all-electric vehicle that has some eye-opening numbers (0-60 4.1 sec )

wow "We expect a price somewhere between a Porsche and a Ferrari." haha kinda broad...but definutly exspensive...especially if it can only go 100 miles at 60 mph. lol guess that means it'l go like 50 miles or so in city? not really worth it for that price but pretty cool none the less

If gas prices ever hit $5 or $6 per gallon in several years like some analysts predict they might, everyone is going to be driving the most fuel efficient vehicle they can. Looks and performance won't mean much if it costs $80-$95 to fill a 16 gallon tank.

Well---the economics of hybrids don't make sense--on a personal level at least. It would take like 10 years of gas savings to add up to the price premium you pay for owning a hybrid. No thanks--besides none of the hybrids on the market look good to me at all. The Accord Sedan is one of my least favorite cars on the road today--it is hideous. Hybridize the Coupe with the 255HP powerplant then we may can talk.

The coolest thing about the Lexus is that while in its "hybrid" mode it will do 0-60 in about 7 seconds flat (according to Lexus).

Actually, right now is a good time to buy a deisel...if you want economy. A lot of them get as good if not better mpgs than the hybrids.
It's unfortunate that there isn't more reward for developing "alternative" fueled vehicles (and consequently more push to make them). It probably won't be economical to have such a vehicle until the term "alternative" is no longer used.

OMG don't get in a wreck with a Hybrid. I got to talking with some that drive a Prius and he got rear-ended at about ~10-15 mph. The repair bill was something like $5-7k because it broke the battery I guess.

With the possibility of a repair costing that much all of a sudden paying more for gas doesn't look to bad.

I wouldn't buy one, but didn't the Geo Metro get in the 50+ mpg range?

Makes me think of the old joke "why don't they make the whole airplane out of the little black boxes"... Why not take what worked on that car and offer an updated version. If hybrids can''t do any better (and people are reportedly paying double the price) sell good ol' 50+ mpg gas engines and call them "quasi-hybrids".

Keep in mind the the Prius has a lot more space than the Metro, has an automatic CVT transmission, and quite a bit more pep.
