Florida might confiscate street-racers' cars

From this article
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Speed-thirsty drivers who race on public streets could lose their souped-up cars and spend up to a year in jail under a measure before the governor.

Racing side-by-side or speeding alone around a set course would also become a first-degree misdemeanor. Offenders could be punished by a year in jail and a $1,000 fine, up from 60 days in jail with a $500 fine.

...
Drag racing has been a rising problem in the state, said Duarte. He noted a 2001 crash in which a 22-year-old Lake County man accidentally hit and killed his own mother and her elderly passenger while racing.

Once the domain of thrill-seeking youngsters, the high-risk sport has developed criminal connections and a wider audience, he said.

"It's not just fun anymore," Duarte said. "They'll race for titles of their vehicles. They'll race for drugs. They'll race for weapons."

The highway patrol has used plainclothes officers to stage sting operations at illegal racing sites, arresting spectators and drivers.

open up inexpensive race ways for these kids...dragstrips...and people will donate helmets and such

"It's not just fun anymore," Duarte said. "They'll race for titles of their vehicles. They'll race for drugs. They'll race for weapons."--this rarely happens, I think he was watching too much Fast and Furious bs

Well, if you believe a lot of the oldtimers, hard-core racers were racing for pinks a long time before Japan started selling cars in the U.S.

The law has already been passed here in California... you try burning rubber anywhere, cop sees it, your car is gone.

Confiscate the cars of people driving with DUIs, or the jackasses that speed excessively weaving in and out of traffic, or the people that do 10 under the speedlimit and stop in the middle of the highway to merge, fine with me. As far as I'm concerned they cause far more accidents and are far more dangerous than any "streetracers".

Well Florida residents are retired.

Retired people don't want idots racing on the street due to the fact there response time is sooooooooo slow.

Not to mention many of them like to go for walks.

Guys.. It's a worldwide thing - it's the law down here too! Even a loud sound system will result in a confiscated car!

That's absurd...just give them a ticket...or take the sub.

They should confiscate cars from people who miss their exit on the highway, so they decide to stop and back up so they can go on it. I HATE THOSE PEOPLE

This is really stupid because who exactly decides what "street racing" is?

Case in point, a guy I know was driving in his RX-7 when a Civic with a fart can pulls up alongside him and starts revving his engine and trying to get him to race. So the light turns yellow, they both stop. There's a cop perpindicular to them at the intersection, and he comes over and gives them both tickets for street racing because he heard the Civic's loud engine revving.

So under these stupid laws, he would have gotten his car taken away just because he had some stupid kid in a Civic pestering him. And how would you defend yourself against such a charge? The cop and judge would probably just say, "your car is all modified like that, so you must have been racing."

One interesting point no one has mentioned so far -- the article notes that they are arresting spectators.

honestly ever since the fast and furious came out the cops got pissed
I had a rice rocket from 1999 or 2003

I got pulled over like once a week
it was crazy

I have had friends arrested and their cars towed for racing and watching
they have been doing this in cali for years

I stopped going to the races because of it

ok...coming from a girl down here who has been involved in countless number of races as a passenger, stander by, driver, ect...i think this is a taaaad extreem. I will admit that there are SOME street races/racers that need to be stopped...like the ones who do it on main roads and are dumb...but there are some that actually know the risk and cons.iquences of what they do an don't do it on open roads, but rather back roads @ 3am when there is nobody. I'm not defending either way, i think its just a bit much...but whatever..the cops here have been trying to catch the "real" racers for a long time, but all they ever come up with are the ricers...and thats probably all they'll ever catch...alive at least

they are worried about more then just these people speeding. I could be wrong but i think they are worried about the violence also. Also people who put money on the races.

Now I am pretty young guy and i have never and will never steet race or watch. IMO it is very childish and I am not going to be the one to have to face a parent of a kid that was killed at an event I was at.

I have more to say but just had surgery on my arm so its hard to type. anyways I am glad they paased this law.

A stock Camry driven by a grandpa quietly running down the freeway at 80mph
A movie star in a Ferrari doing 90mph down the same freeway... a lil louder.
A kid in a yellow civic doing 70 down the same freeway with his 30000 decibel "muffler".
Which one you think will get stopped?

Point is, if you attract attention to yourself, such as having a pulsating neon under your car, painting your car stabilo yello, or having an amplifier instead of muffler out of your car's ***, then dont blame the police for trying to stop you...

I dont recall saying every ILLEGAL street race was the same. I said money not slips but I guess there are some people who might do slips .Just because you dont see it dosent mean it might not be happening. Anyways its very childish IMO. there are some tracks where you can go and do this and it would be legal.
