35 MPG plus power, I'm very very pleased with this move.


BMW has announced that it will bring its 3.0L twin-turbo diesel engine to the U.S. The engine — which features variable twin-turbo technology — is currently available in many of BMW's European vehicles. BMW recently previewed the engine in its 3, 5 and 6-series cars, although the automaker has yet to confirm which models will get the diesel and how much the diesel option will cost.

According to the editor of Roundel, Satch Carlson, the 3 and 5-series are the most likely candidates to receive the diesel option.

In Europe, the 335d produces 286 horsepower and 427 lb-ft of torque, while still achieving a combined cycle of 35 mpg. In comparison, a 335i produces 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque with a combined cycle of 20 mpg.

BMW failed to give a time frame for a U.S. diesel introduction, although it is believed the diesel will bow in the latter part of next year.

According to Wards Auto, diesels account for 67% of BMW's European sales.

The diesel technology is terrific; however BMW styling has always left me completely cold.

no one is going to buy them in the states, because the public isn't used to paying so much dough for a disiels (the sex appeal isn't there), what they should bring is 5 series diesel and 7 series diesel and SUVs (maybe they already do but I stopped following this some time ago) I drove most of the European luxury diesels and unless it is in a big sedan it does not make much sense for a performance oriented driver.

Overall however the more disiels the introduce into North America the better.

That's awesome, I'm waiting on diesels to finally hit the market here. I'm not a big fan of VW Styling (too bland for me) and I won't drive a truck. I think that is all my options right there. Unfortunately I can only afford this if BMW made a 0 series diesel

I wonder if Those posted numbers are actual. The 300/300 for the 335i certainly is not. It gets SUBSTANTIALLY more. I knwo this much, line a 4 dr auto 335i next to an '06 M3, and most would be surprised which wins. With more weight, and less claimed HP, the 335i doesn't even make it that close.

jigga what? are you saying the 335 is faster or slower than those posted numbers. i used to work for bmw, 300hp/300tq is accurate. there were some early show cars that has a boost tweak that put up numbers that rivaled the '06 m3 in 0-60, but they were flukes - 300/300 is accurate for the 335.

I'm saying that people have had them dyno'd stock at just under 300 TO THE WHEELS. I am also saying that I have seen one line up next to a 33 hp m3, with the better driver in the M3, and the 335 wining. Both people Owned these $50k+ cars so high rev clutch dumps weren't in order) Yeah, I'm saying that I've consistently heard that 300/300 is WAY to modest.

from what i've seen the 335i is making more around 350hp.

So wait.. BMW see's a demand for this and is willing to fork up the cash to my knowledge "de-tune" the car (if you will) to meet US Reg's just to sell it here?? I know that most of the EU's Diesels arent here in the US because of some Reg which is escaping me atm which are very strict to the point that none of the engines are able to be shipped ova here. Shame since all I ever hear is great things about them including the gas mileage never mind the power they put out.

If BMW is smart they'll attempt to keep the price inline and not over inflate it and hence create a real market/interest for it especialy in these days of Mpg thought.

yeah, they are sleepers. something is/was going on with the boost to get those numbers. it's definitely 300/300 on the books, but some were outperforming that b/c the boost was tweaked (not by the driver, but just straight from the plant!). a lot of people said bmw purposely kept it at 300 b/c they didn't want to compete with the new m3 or **** of old m3 owners that just bought an '06!

That's precisely what I heard. That it knowingly made more then 333, but couldn't be advertised as such. The new M3 will have to be near or around 400 with comparable tourque from a high revving v8 to sell.

The situation reminds me of the late 90's A4 a little... THe 2.8 v6 was such a turd that they had to tune the newly arrived 1.8T WAY down, so that the $6800 2.8 would sell at all. Almost immediately the aftermarket crowd realized that 50+ HP(from the 150hp version) was available for roughly $500. 230hp(more then the 2.8 had) was available with bolt on's that don't include a larger turbo, for like $3-4k. Sales of the 2.8 slowed as time went on until the 3.2 came out, was a significantly better performer, and thus the 1.8T was bumped to 170...

The difference is those were real and advertised numbers, BMW really only cares about the advertising. I have very little doubt that if you lined up 10 2006 m3's(stock) and 10 2007 335i's(stock, again) that the 10 best dyno runs are turbocharged....

We have the larget population of Mercedes and BMW's here in they area for So. Calf.

We finally got rid of those damn polluting diesels.

Now there back again...
