Mazda is trying to decide what engine to use in the 2014 MX-5 and still hasnt figured it out.
Quote:
Apparently, Mazda engineers were originally planning to equip the ND with a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter inline-4 with SkyActiv technology, but couldn’t quite squeeze the desired horsepower from the engine. A variant of the current 2.0-liter inline-4 was also considered, but it couldn’t meet their fuel economy goals. Instead Mazda has narrowed it down to either a 1.8-liter inline-4 with SkyActiv or a 1.3- or 1.5-liter inline-4 with forced induction.
funny, i read an article back in December that talked about a 1.3 liter piston turbo (which of course immediately got conflated by rumor mongers as a rotary mx-5) i guess RT is just now catching up in the rumor cycle :D

I refuse to believe Mazda does not know what engine they're using. I also doubt they are using anything less than 1.8 skyactiv G for our market. There are people talking turbo, people saying diesel, people speculating about a rotary; all hogwash .

well I would say that depends. I mean considering that a couple of weeks ago there was that rumor that mazda hadn't even decided on which wheels were going to propel the next mx-5, the that suggests that the ND isn't very far in into development. And if it actually is still that early in development then it's not out of the realm of possibility that they're still figuring out the engine. This is of course if these rumors even have a grain of truth (and that's a big IF).
The "r" word you used should be used in the fullest extent of it's definition.
I think it's more likely that 'a reporter can't figure it out' than that 'Mazda can't figure it out'
I bet they laugh their asses off from the rumor mill. For a tiny failing company that produces chronically slow and unwanted cars, (according to the 'press'), they sure generate TONS of speculation

the Rumor I was referring to was this one. But then again even drunk monkey's are considered reliable reporters nowadays. I really think the title "reporter" should be amended to "some guy on the interwebs"
