2007 Buick GNX

GNX. No other name in automotive history says "80's Supercar" like those three letters. Now the legend is back.

Buicks 2007 GNX is a modern-day incarnation of classic street performance. When you turn the key and hear the throaty dual exhausts announcing the Twin Turbo 3.6L V-6, you'll know you have your hands full. Compared to its '80s namesake, the new GNX sports a suspension that is tighter, an engine that's more powerful and a manual transmission that now boasts two additional gears. The car will hit 60 mph (97 km/h) in about four seconds, and run the quarter mile in under 13 seconds. There's nothing like it in its class.

Total performance

The completely new GNX isn't just about horsepower, of course. Its unique personality includes impressive cornering abilities, a smooth ride and surprising comfort. But the heart of the GNX is indeed a truly awesome Twin Turbo and Intercooled 3.6l V-6 engine, also known as the base powerplant for the Buick Velite Concept. The GNX produces an estimated 458 horsepower and with 469 lb.-ft. of torque, it has no problem leaving a stop with purpose.

Eighteen-inch alloy wheels and performance tires are matched to a fully independent, performance-tuned suspension featuring direct-acting stabilizing bars and power rack-and-pinion steering. Traction control and a limited slip differentials also come standard. And, today's GNX revs through six forward speeds with the close-ratio manual transmission, or you can choose a six-speed Hydra-Matic. Both come with a 3.46:1 final drive ratio.

Performance-oriented interior

The GNX is, first and foremost, a driver's car. Every detail, from the satin-finish steering wheel to the race-inspired metallic pedals, gives the driver a sense of performance from the moment the car is entered. The standard feature list starts off with leather 2+2 bucket seats, in black -color-coordinated with the vehicle's exterior color. The high-tech seats provide lateral support, wrapping around the driver and front passenger and complementing the great handling characteristics of the chassis. Also standard is a six-disc CD-changer with premium 10-speaker sound system, cruise control, a multi-function driver information center, keyless entry system and a host of other features to enhance the driving experience.

Sensuous design

Rather than create an imitation of the original legend, the 2007 GNX provides a contemporary interpretation of the classic buick sports coupe. The distinctive, tautly stretched exterior, aggressive lowered stance and sleek, simple form all help express the clean, athletic styling direction of Buick. Add this to the obvious performance of the vehicle and you have a rear-wheel-drive TT+I V-6-powered premium sports coupe wrapped in a seamless, modern design.

Safety and quality

Bringing the GNX to a safe stop is accomplished through standard four-wheel disc brakes (ventilated front, solid rear), part of a four-channel anti-lock braking system. Other standard safety features include dual front air bags, three-point safety belts for all occupants and an Emergency Mode that automatically shuts down the engine, turns off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors and turns on the dome light any time the air-bag system is deployed.

Production of the 2007 Buick GNX will begin in September 2006 at Holden's award-winning Elizabeth plant in Australia using the latest techniques to ensure both measurable and "perceived" quality. Projected annual production will be 18,000 vehicles.

I bet it's a hoax, I've heard nothing about it from legitimate automotive sources. But I hope I'm wrong, I've always wanted an 87 GNX or Turbo Regal.

That picture is definitely not legitimate. It's a blatant photochop of a GTO. Is everyone know that, and not acknowledging it because it's so obvious, or are you just a bunch of idiots? :P

This story and accompanying photochop was revealed to be a hoax on several domestic message forums-disregard it.

That was an off-the-cuff (and ill-considered) remark from Lutz. According to GM, there are no plans to retire another nameplate.

...I agree that this appears to be a hoax. But if they don't start producing stuff like this again soon, killing another nameplate may become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Of course, Pontiac IS producing something quite like this and look how much good it's doing them. The GTO is not doing all that well in the market. Nice car, I nearly bought one, but still not selling as hoped. And that's a shame.

As far as the GNX is concerned, my last car was a Buick. Go ahead and laugh. But it was a Regal GS. Had the supercharged V6 that makes 240 HP and 280 Ft/Lbs of torque. Went 0 - 60 in 6.6 seconds. Pretty respectable for a four-door family car. Problem was, the suspension was nowhere near as good as the engine.

GM will always make power and handling an either/or proposition for new models to protect the Corvette as the flagship performance car.

Wasn't the original GNX faster than the Corvette of the time?

Too bad it's a hoax...and a nasty tease I might add.

I would have no problem whatsoever owning Buick's version of the GTO. Especially since the specs (from the drivetrain to the hp/tq to the gas mileage) read almost exactly like a the most recent Nissan Skyline GT-R. I've always loved Buick muscle. Problem is they haven't made any in close to 20 years now. But I'd definately be interested in buying a reincarnated GNX if it resembled the car above in performance and cost. Very creative prank. I hope it provokes some serious thought among any GM suits who might happen upon it...but I doubt it will. It seems they're perfectly content having officially designated Buick as the brand of the "blue hair".

BTW...here's another photochop of the GNX concept.

very nice looking chop(the first one) the new GTO aint all too bad, and it would be sort of strange if buick released a full scale production car like this considering the GNX was really only a semi-production car of 547 units. not to mention there will be too much clashing of their own market with this type of product.

for example they're trying to turn cadillac's image around since the marktet for the past 40 years has been a bunch of old farts, and thats basically how buick is now, it wouldnt make sense to have both of their more luxury oriented brands change course. not to mention they dont even make a regular grand national anymore huh?

--edit--
in addition to my last statement, it wouldnt make sense to remake the high performance version of a car thats not being produced, and a commemorative car in addition, as the GNX was signalling the end of the production of the grand national...

Pretty good numbers but that's to be expect for American muscle cars. We'll see how it does into a corner. But it's also ugly as all hell. When are the American Manufactures going to make something original? Its bugging the hell out of me, they always result back to the same designs(Tho some of them may be classic) or end up making it look too much like a model already being sold. I personally think it looks too much like the current GTO. I'd rather have the old GTO if I had the choice! I am leaning towards a Photochop!

HUH? Buick's still gonna be around in 2 years?

And if it WERE real, that means Buick offers 6 cars geared for the 60+ crowd (a.k.a. old people) and then 1 car geared for, what, 30-somethings? I don't think so.
