2006 Mitsu Eclipse numbers from R&T

0-60: 5.8 sec
1/4 mile: 14.4@101.0
60-0: 127 ft
skidpad: .83g
slalom: 64.1

Fast car, but just an average handler (at ~3600 lbs, that's to be expected I guess).

That's a nice trap, there are so many FWD cars out and coming out that trap around 100mph now... Out of curiosity were those numbers done with all seasons?

^^^From what I've heard yes. Not sure exactly what tires, but they're the same that come on the ralliart lancers.

As nice as the numbers seem, I can't get over the fact that the power is going to the wrong wheels...anyone know how bad this thing'll torque steer?

the second gens started in '95 and ended in '99. This new 4th gen Eclipse looks like crap.

I agree about the 2nd Gen. I do like nicely modded 3rd Gens as well....but this thing is just hideous.

I think that this Eclipse is a nice improvement over the last one--its acceleration times and power are nice too--but I still think its fairly unattractive and its front wheel drive. I will never own a front wheel drive 'sports/sporty' car.

Yeah, it seems like the design is getting worse and worse. At least the last generation looked good with a bodykit. Not sure that a bodykit will make up for the way this one is designed. All that power and torque would be nice though. Hopefully they'll take a look at what worked in the past, and come out with an AWD model.

is there any reason WHY the 2006 Eclipse pig weighs so much?

Yeah, I had a 98 GST. I miss it sometimes. I loved the looks which still hold its own even today. By comparison to the 2006 model, it looks like a friggin' Porsche! The GSX also only weighed 3200 lbs., and that was with the AWD tranny.

I saw it at the NY auto show, looks a bit better in real life no matter how hard that is to believe. But agree with most here, the looks have gone down over the past few years. Im impressed with the numbers though not envious of the car as a whole.

Fugly is an understatement ! The first thing I noticed was the wheel gap on that thing is immense!

That seems like the case with all Eclipses, old and new. My 98 GST had this and it was one of the first mods I did - getting an Eibach kit to lower it. For some reason, Mitsu believes this is the 'proper' height for the vehicles...

I don't think it's that bad. Performance wise, it's right on par with the Ion Redline and Cobalt SS. If it comes in around $20k Mitsubishi should be able to move some numbers. I personally think (and hope) it will sell relatively well. 99% of the people in the market for a car like that (cheap, compact coupe) don't understand the performance differences between FWD and AWD/RWD - nor do they even care. There will be a lot of these cars on the road before year's end, but most will be the base model IMHO.

It's my understanding that Mitsu didn't make AWD an option on the new Eclipse for 2 reasons...1.) This platform is from an existing FWD setup and the R&D associated w/adding AWD would have put this car in the price range of the Evo and 2.) The Evo is Mitsu's flagship and, like Ford's Mustang, nothing on the showroom floor should compete with it in terms of performance.

right now the V6 2005 Eclipse starts at $25,000. I seriously doubt with a new model they are going to drop the price 5 grand. Only the 4 cylinder starts under $20k, and that wouldn't be comparing apples to apples.

Most will be the 4 cylinder because of the price--the GT will be about $26K--fully optioned it will be closer to $30K. Not a terribly good buy honestly when those other cars mentioned (SRT4/Cobalt/Ion) are a few thousand less. The demographic that will go for this car will be those cross-shopping Solara's with Mustangs.

yes but we are talking about the V6 equipped Eclipse here, as the thread starter had posted stats on such. Bring the 4 banger into the equation is irrelevant.
