Mitsubishi Motors UK has taken the wraps off the fastest saloon car ever produced by a major manufacturer. Built to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Mitsubishi’s entry into the UK market, the new Lancer Evolution VIII MR FQ400 will be built in a limited edition run of just 100 cars, and is available to order now priced £46,999 (approx. $85,000).

The car was the brainchild of Mitsubishi Motors UK’s Sales & Marketing Director, Lance Bradley. "The new Lancer Evolution VIII MR FQ400 is the ultimate expression of who and what we are as a brand. This is a versatile four-door saloon that can out accelerate supercars costing almost ten times as much."

The new model is based on the Lancer Evolution VIII MR FQ320 and was developed in the UK by Mitsubishi Motors UK’s motor sports department, in association with tuning specialists Rampage, Owen Developments and Flow Race Engines. Together, they modified the Lancer’s legendary 2.0-litre turbocharged engine so that it now produces a mighty 405 bhp and 355 lb-ft of torque.

This is enough to propel the FQ400 from 0-60 mph in an incredible 3.5 seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 175 mph. It is a performance that even some of the world’s most exotic supercars struggle to match. The £330,000 Porsche Carrera GT, for example, requires 3.9 seconds to sprint from 0-62 mph, while the ultra-exclusive Pagani Zonda needs 3.7 seconds. The BMW M3 – hitherto the benchmark ‘everyday supercar’ – takes 5.3 seconds to achieve the same feat.

The key to the MR FQ400’s performance lies not just in its engine, but also in its sophisticated chassis. Like every car in the Evolution VIII MR (Mitsubishi Racing) range, the FQ400 benefits from Mitsubishi’s electronically-controlled four-wheel drive system (4WD) and a Bilstein suspension system honed at the legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife racetrack. The introduction of a new braking system on the FQ400 also ensures that it has the ‘stop’ to match its ‘go’.

Subtle aesthetic enhancements differentiate the FQ400 from the rest of the MR range and improve its high-speed stability. Ralliart aero mirrors, a carbon fibre front lip spoiler and a ‘sharks tooth’ rear vortex generator, are as functional as they are attractive. And it further benefits from gloss black lightweight Team Dynamics alloy wheels and red ‘FQ400’ badging.

Inside, the sporting, focussed theme continues with a Momo steering wheel and Recaro bucket seats. The fascia has carbon fibre detailing and there’s a discreet plaque next to the gearstick, which reveals the car’s production number. The ambience is purposeful but the FQ400 is no stripped out road racer. Electric windows and mirrors and climate control are all fitted as standard, highlighting the Lancer’s appeal as the world’s most practical and versatile supercar.

As befits its status as an official Mitsubishi Motors UK product, the FQ400 has undergone extensive reliability testing and is supplied with a three years/36,000 mile manufacturer’s warranty. This exciting flagship can be ordered now from approved Mitsubishi Ralliart dealers in the UK.

Damn impressive car, but just buy a regular Evo and put 15k in it and you have a car nearly as good with half the cost and probably more HP.

lol. They have engines grenading all over the place with 340bhp. Most of the extra cash will be for future engine rebuilds lol. Cudos to them for 200bhp/liter and being brave enough to make it, but will anyone be brave enough to buy one at that price.


Also its only 60bhp over the 340 but 1 second quicker to 60, so they've mesed about with the gearing also, and I dread to think of the serice interval/costs.

Not only do I own an EVO but I'm a regular member at evolutionm and I have not heard of all the grenading. The 4g63 is strong and can easily make 340 whp. With the proper modifications and tuning it can easily make 400 hp. Many of the US tuner shops have their EVO's running north of 450whp. If it makes you feel better to make up things about the engine grenading then so be it but don't preach this on forums.

Finally? Car manufacturers have been making them for years, including Mazda. Also, Rob is pretty off base with his claims like Wombat pointed out.

Shockingly enough, I agree with Ike on this one. I'd rather get a standard (lol) EVO, and then put some money into it to get it just right.

I dont understand "special edition" cars that jack the price up far out of reason, like the MS-8

Mazdaspeed cars have always been very well priced. The Mazdaspeed Protege was only $4000 more than the next closest model. The Mazdaspeed Miata is less than $1000 more than the LS! $1000 extra and you get bigger rims, tires, and turbo.

Mazdaspeed cars have also always been pretty unimpressive with both having less than 200hp, one being FWD and the other (the Miata) getting lukewarm reviews in the handling department.

Another thing is to take into consideration is if Mitsu was to sell this car in the US would the car cost the same? I had to bring this up since the high sticker price was mentioned.

Right, if a car doesn't have tons of HP, then it is garbage... like that new Lotus Elise, only 190hp, what a POS.

The MSM got 6.2 to 60 and 14.5 in the 1/4.... decent numbers considering the price.

And not good handling? In Autoweek, it was the second fastest
in the slalom of any car they'd ever tested.

Way to twist what I say around...

I was pointing out that the Mazdasped cars aren't that much more expensive than the base cars because the changes aren't as outrageous as oh... say... 400hp and all the supporting mods that would go along with that. Also, if you had any clue what you're talking about you would know that I've started a couple threads about the Lotus Elise and what a wonderful car it is.

Now tell me where you've see those times for the MSM, because I sure as hell haven't seen anything close to that (6.7/15.2 C&D). Even if the car is capable of that, "decent" just doesn't cut it in my book. As for the handling I said luke warm reviews, I haven't driven the car yet but have read two publications now that critisize the chassis and "relaxed handling" but I would imagine it still handles pretty well.

My point wasn't that the Mitsubishi is overpriced, it was towards what Genom said about the pricing being jacked up outrageously for a Mazdaspeed RX-8. I merely pointed out that the two mazdaspeed versions we have received here in the states have been a real value. For $1000 mores what do you expect with the Mazdaspeed Miata? Performance not too far off the RX-8, and the reason for the poor handling is because of the unsprung weight added by the large wheels. Unsprung weight kills miata. Switch to lightweight 15s, add a couple of exhaust components and your back to a 2400lb great handling car with 170whp for only $2000-$3000 more than the MSRP of the model below it, thats a pretty good value to me, if I wasn't so far along with my SM2 car I would have picked up a MSM in a heartbeat.

You're referring to this article where they specifically mention it was a prototype they weren't allowed to drive hard.

The production version got 6.2/14.59.

I haven't seen any reviews that didn't like the handling, so I call bullshit on that until I see some proof otherwise.

I dontunderstand what is wrong w/Mitsubishi. Back in the 90s they had some beautiful looking and performing cars. Now this isa perfect example of my point. They have created a disgustingly fast engine and what??? Theyre going to dump it intoanother ugly Lancer? What the hell iswrong w/them?

Why cant they make a fast car that actually LOOKS like a sports car (3000 GT for example) and put thisengine into that? Whothe hell wants to pay close to 90k for a 3.5 second 0-60 car that looks like a goddamn **** box?

I wishI knew why they stopped makingcars that fit the "sports car" look. The 3000GT was beautiful. What made them stop there?

i have always been a big fan of the 4G63 motor. i put down 387WHP on my 97 GST. stock internals and it never "grenaded" a motor. that motor is awesome and can be pushed pretty hard. it was a toss-up between an EVO 8 and a RX-8. i just didn't like the look of the EVO and i hated the interior. i do miss turbo but i haven always wanted a rotary, and who can deny how beautiful the RX-8 is! I LOVE MY 8!!!

Jerky and Mr. Ed, I really like the looks of the Evo, especially the MR. I know I'm in the minority but I'm far from alone. Flared fenders and aggresive stance with simple lines has always been something I like in cars. The reason I love the E30 M3 is the same reason I love the Evo and WRX. Also you use the 3000GT as an example, that was a pig of a car and I'll take the Evo over it any day. Yes it was a better looking car but it also was a lot more expensive. the Evo and Impreza has done well for years and I don't think either companies are ready to deviate too far from their current forumula, great performance for the dollar without having to spend a lot of money on new body panels, design teams, and all the other costs associated.

Like Ike, i also like the looks of the evo, its just such an agressive looking car. But to spend close to 90k on one isnt something i would/could ever do.
