The 10 Fastest Cars To Roar From Showrooms in 2005
http://www.forbesautos.com/advice/toptens/fastest.html
My car made the list. No other Japanese cars did though. The Ford GT and the Corvette were the only American cars. Anyhooo...just a shameless plug. :D

They only tested 0-60. That's it. I'll bet the 1/4 mile times would change the results some. How about top speed? How about cornering? Braking? The Lancer is definitely quick to 60 though. The bad thing about all wheel drive cars is that while they may get off the line fast, they typically have low trap speeds.

Er, forgive me for not being up on my magazine numbers, but if the Evo made that list, where's the STi? Isn't the Evo just a hair faster than the STi, so shouldn't the STi still be on there?
Also, it seems like they missed a whole lot of cars on that list.

Edit: 4.3 0-60 for the Evo, I don't think so, KBB is on crack.

They listed the Evo RS, which is a stripped down version of the Evo. It's about 100lbs lighter the other Evos or STi's. That's why it's 0-60mph time was so good.
Don't get me wrong...it's a skewed test. But it's a nice feeling to know that if you pull up next to some guy in a Carrera S at a stoplight it'll be a close race. Nobody on is taking this to mean the Evo is a better car than the others on that list. It's just sorta cool when you look at that list and see a 4 door $30k econobox on there. The Evo is a real overachiever.

I'm not sure how the gearing is on the Evo, but I know it takes 3 shifts to get to 60 in the STi. I would imagine with a 5-speed it wouldn't be geared that way, which I would assume is why the 0-60 is usually lower in the Evo.
I could be wrong though, I've never driven a normal Evo, just an MR, and it was such a short drive I don't recall what the gearing was like anyways.

The viper sould fall in somewere around 5 or 6. It has a 3.9-4.1 0 to 60 depending on the which magazine. The best road test of the Evo I remember got around 4.5.
3 Shifts? So you need to bring it into 4th gear?

Yep, I think the shift to 3rd is 50-55mph. The STi also has more lowend and the AWD system is better for launching so it usually more than makes up for the extra shift.

BTW...apparently there's a guy who cracked his bone-stock, full interior '05 RS into the high 12's. I've yet to see the time slip posted on EvoM but I wouldn't be surprised to hear of a factory freak getting into the 12's at a good track and in good weather.

Some might argue that the 604 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque packed into the SL65 AMG are too much power and thrust for a road car. They're wrong.
No, the SL65 doesn't have too much power. Its problem is it wasn't given a commensurate helping of traction.
Though I would take the roadster looks over the coupe any day, I love the SL(K) Benz look in silver/grey.

I don't think the Evo or the STI should even be in that list, because there's no way in hell the Evo RS does 0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds. That number is WRONG. I guess that writer is an Evo owner. The Evo does not fit in that category of cars.

Motor Trend did it last year in 4.4 with an '04 RS...

Sport Compact Car did it last year in 4.8 with an '04 RS...

Considering the '05 Evo puts down another 20whp/20wtq over the '03 and '04 model I think it's possible...although I've never done it myself. :p

I stand corrected. Now that I think about it, the EVO is geared to achieve these numbers, and when you make a stripped down RS version, that reduced weight can alter that 0 to 60 time. I do find it amazing that it's a full 4 tenths of a second faster from 0 to 60, and 3-4 tenths faster in 1/4 mile for motor trends testing of all the 05 Evolutions. It takes both EVO VIII and EVO MR out pretty nicely in 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile times. I am wondering though if that is good or bad marketing wise, to make your cheaper base model outperform the other two, but at same time it can be smart because it gives people option to either go plain, or sacrifice some speed for more amenities. This is almost making the EVO MR a complete waste of time and money IMO. But I do think that time is very misleading being put up with those other cars in top ten, because after 0 to 60, those cars will be tearing that EVO a new one.
