What parts would be needed for this mod? The motor/trans and what else??
Im talking the basics, not the extra parts. Just the basic LS1/LS2 motor. The mods and thoughts of upgrading can come after the basic principle is applied.

new custom subframe, tranny, ppf, probably a new rearend, new engine mounts, driveshaft, rear half shafts.... well that's just to warm up.
how much wider is the v8 compared to 13b? width would be a big factor in trying to cram it as further back as you can. if you want more of the straight line performance, i'm sure you can fit it comfortably in the engine bay.

questions are good, but i think you'll get lot more out of it if you go to rx7 forum and read up on their LS1 conversions. do a search, you'll get tons of info.
whoever has done lots of rx7-ls1 conversions should be capable of doing the same on our rx8's. the layouts are very similar. some say it should be easier on an rx8 than rx7.
best luck to u.

Aye... I know people want power but it really bothers me when you ****** the defining feature of the RX line out of the car. Besides don't you loose everything that is controlled by the ECU like DSC and stuff? Not to mention no more 9K RPMs, no more 50 / 50 balance, no more agility...all just go faster in a str8 line?
I just don't get it why people get this car and then ****** out the heart for paying serious money just to go from 14 seconds to about 10 - 11 (unless you go way out of control and and spend money to do 8's). Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to sell the car and just get like a used vette or a GTO... something with the motor already?
Just my .02 cents
Edit:
Just want to make it clear that there is NO hating going on here, just confusion to why spend 30K on a Japanese car only to make it American...

Let me quote an email from Brian Hinson at Hinson Supercars.
We have had a number of requests for this build over the years. We have not built the equipment for the car yet, but we are planning on it later this summer. If you're interested in having the car built for you, we can arrange a discount turn-key build where the parts would be developed on your vehicle. We currently have a customer planning on buying a new RX8 later this year for the conversion, so it will be done by the end of the year.
Until the parts are finished, the final pricing cannot be determined. However, we are guessing the developed equipment will be very similar to the 1993-995 RX7 conversion. Therefore, I've attached two estimates to show a ballpark expected cost for both mail order and turn-key sales.
Let us know if you have any more questions or concerns.
Thanks,
Brian Hinson

Slayer: I have a better source.
that referred to a certain somebody's car, not the project as a whole.

N Rider: The quote was different for turnkey vs getting the parts through the mail.
They give you SO many options on your installation, but their typical package for the rx-7 with mail order parts (and you do the work yourself or have another shop do it) is $6,274.75. This doesn't include the price of transmission or engine.
For turnkey installation by Hinson Supercars, the typical setup will cost $13,699.72. This DOES include the estimated cost of engine and transmission ($4,950).
There are plenty of other options like nitrous, turbo, cam, etc etc etc that can be added on. There are just way too many for me to type out. I can forward the Excel files Brain Hinson sent me that show all the options and their prices. Just PM me if you want an email.

Does anyone know how much the RX8 weighs. I kno the LS1 weighs 500lbs, but don't kno the RENESIS compared to it.
Also, are there any examples of the LS1 in an RX8? Does anyone know what modifications need to be done to frame, etc to fit the LS1?
Thanks,
Sean

If that vid doesn't make you want an LS1 RX-8, nothing will............
The main concern (for me) is what will break at the power levels an LS1 can push? If you use an RX-8 trany (which I don't see happening) 2nd gear could be gone quite quickly, then the rear drive axles.
The smartest thing would be an LS1 with the Tremec 6-speed manual, custom driveshaft, and then a complete Corvette rear end, but who knows if it will fit, then probably custom axles and CV joints, etc. Cost of the project at this point is pretty high, I'll say over $15k.
That's not to say you couldn't swap in a bone stock LS1 packing 320 or so the rear wheels and run fine. Hell, I imagine 350-380-rwhp would be fine, but anything more and parts will be flying.

We may see an LS-powered RX-8 sooner than most might think. If my Renesis rebuild/porting doesn't yield the results I am seeking then I will ditch this summer and prepare for an LS install, if it is possible within reason, for next season. GMPP has an LSX block, and all the rest of the stuff, plus the aftermarket covers whatever else I may need. Also, GMPP has the LS-7 available for $15K. If I were to go that far with it I might keep it simple and build myself a street/strip Powerglide transmission and whichever stick-axle rear end would fit.

the question is WHY?!?!
I am really against the whole idea of putting in v-8s into Mazda RX models, The whole point of the RX models is that they have a rotary motor. If you dont like the rotary motor then dont buy the RX or sell the car, and get a corvette.
Also, it has to cost alot of money! Swapping in a v-8 into the RX, getting wider rims, wider tires, extending the rear fenders. etc etc. And I am sure that the final result would be a car that is slower becasue it would weigh more then a corvette, and costs more money.

I'm not a big fan of cutting a new car up. If anyone can come up with a kit that can fit the LS1 tranny and motor under the hood, I'd be more then willing to buy it.
I could care less about if the motor is a piston or rotor. I've always been a sucker for Raw chaise bending power.
