Ok, thank you guys for coming to the meet up, especially those guys who came specifically to check out the new Simota intake. For the sake of those that could not join us, I'll post some of my findings in this thread over the next few days/weeks of testing.

As I've mentioned, there is currently an issue with having TOO high an airflow causing mixture to be too lean if you clutch in and close the throttle at high speeds. Auto RX-8s should not have this problem since you would not "neutral" your transmission at high speeds. Anyway, after a couple of hard runs, the ECU seems to be getting used to the new air flow and didn't exhibit that problem while driving on my way home. Will test it again tomorrow and report my observations. Thanks to tems900 for the info and advise on the MAF sensor and the intake wire mesh. I'll give it a shot tomorrow and see if that helps the air flow turbulence that may be the cause of the problem.

The sound of the intake at idle is a very sweet whistle... almost like there's some "fan" that's "force feeding" extra air, but there isn't any of coz. :p Normal throttle inputs up to about 4000rpm doesn't make any more noise compared to the stock intake but thereafter the intake starts to come alive and you'll hear that all familiar throaty suction sound that progressively gets louder all the way to redline. Comparatively, it's still much quieter than the 1st gen K&N Typhoon intake but the open pod intake sound is definitely there to give you the satisfaction.

As for performance results, I'll do some g-tech runs to compare the Simota intake against the stock intake soon. Will definitely post my findings soon. Here are some pics for you to take a look. As for pricing, I've been told it will be under S$400, probably cheaper. They are working out a promotional price for us and will come down to install on one of our Sunday meet-ups for those who are interested.

More updates:

Regarding my earlier posting about the airflow being too high at high speeds, this problem should only exist if you have removed your Variable Fresh Air Duct (VFAD) that is tucked into your front bumper. If you have not removed it or basically have never removed your front bumper, then you should not have this problem. Anyway, our ECUs seem to be able to adapt and adjust to the new intake's higher airflow after a few days of driving around.

I did some reading up on the intake wire mesh and I think that a wire mesh in the intake piping before the MAF sensor should help to stabilise the air flow so that the MAF sensor can get an accurate reading. I have customised an intake wire mesh for my intake pipe have just installed it. Will be testing it out over the next few days.

Now for the performance results, I hope you guys weren't expecting HUGE gains since there is no such intake for our 8s that can give you anything remotely close to huge gains. After analysing the g-tech runs between the stock intake and the Simota intake, the Simota intake seems to give an overall increase of about 2-3HP more than the stock intake. The maximum difference is about 5HP above the stock intake but only within a short RPM range. Absolute peak HP increase is very marginal. Torque is increased overall by about 4Nm and a maximum of about 7Nm again within a small RPM band. So there you have it, certainly nothing to shout about, but that's to be expected from any intake systems because our 8s are already well optimised. To get more out of any power mods, tuning is essential.

As for availability and pricing, the distributor said the next shipment should be coming within 2 weeks, but please take this with a pinch of salt. Simota is having difficulty keeping up with the demand because this intake is good value for money. It looks especially nice on our 8s and sounds good too. Once the stock arrives, they intend to come down to one of our Sunday meet-ups to install the intake for those who are interested and will give us a SPECIAL promotional price. I was told stock is limited in the next shipment so if you're interested, please let me know so I can coordinate with the supplier and reserve a piece for you.

Lastly before I sign off, let me just say that I'm only giving my 2cents review here. I'm just trying to report my findings objectively. I'm not recommending this intake by any means so please don't buy it based on my account (I've only had it for 3 days, so I can't promise there won't be problems in future). It's not the best intake in the world and it has it's shortcomings, but so far it's okay. Looks good, sounds good and fairly inexpensive.

Sqflyer:
Well said and well done for all the effort that you have given. Really appreciate that you give us a detail report and findings. I also think the mesh provides a steady and uniform air flow to the sensors as RB also mentioned that in their website.
Put me in your list to get the Simota air filter.

Thanks ! can't wait to fit it in.

I took out the detachable bell & wire mesh assembly from the original air intake box as a comparison and bought a wire mesh of similar thickness/density. Next, I marked out the size of the Simota's intake pipe on the wire mesh and cut it out with a pair of wire cutters. Then I mounted the wire mesh in front of the intake pipe and clamped it down with Simota's intake bell and screwed down with the 4 screws. I know this sounds complicated, but it's really quite easy and took about 2 hours max. The hardest part was the cutting coz the wire mesh I got was quite tough. I should have taken a picture, then you'll see what I mean. I'll try to post one when I get a chance. I haven't had much opportunity to test out the Simota intake with the wire mesh, but so far so good.

Ok, here are the pics of the stock intake box, the detachable intake bell and wire mesh, the modified Simota intake pipe with the extra leg for added support and a close-up of the wire mesh on the Simota intake pipe.

So far the results with the wire mesh is quite good. Air flow is stable and I can clutch in and free gear at well over 100km/h without a hint of the RPM ever dipping below normal idling rpm.

Woo hoo.... my Simota intake is taking a turn in a new direction. Somehow the plain ol' blue Simota filter is metamorphosing into an A'pexi Power Intake Once the transformation is complete, I'll do some test runs and post the results and pics. Stay tuned.

Awesome job with the intake flyer...your aerodynamics training is really paying dividends! Others will benefit from that for sure. Btw, you have to change your avatar to reflect your new nose

Ok, here it is.... my new intake is complete. I've named it the A'peximota.... Here are the pics. Performance results to follow once I get it installed and do some test runs.

Wait first, one step at a time mah... now juz finished concept prototype, still got trials and testing, analyse performance results and if it's good then can go into production and launch my "A'peximota Carbon Fiber Aero Form Power Intake". With a such a long powderful name like that, sure sell like hotcakes... wahahaha :D :D

No lah,... only nuts like me will go thru all the trouble just for a silly intake. But if anyone is interested, I'd be more than happy to share the knowledge and experience I've gained in this exercise. I think that's what this forum is all about. Learning more about the car we all love.

Well, basically the Simota intake works fine as long as the VFAD has NOT been removed on your 8. Personally, I prefer the Dual Funnel Power Intake from A'pexi which by the way is the no. 1 brand for air filters. So I replaced the Simota intake's air filter element with the A'pexi Power Intake air filter and thus the "A'peximota" is born. I just installed my modified intake last night and drove around town without a hitch. Will try to do some test runs then I can analyse the performance data and see if it really works well before I can recommend it to anyone. In the meantime, you can just order your Simota Intake with me and I'll get them to reserve a piece for you in the next shipment. The A'pexi Power Intake mod can always come later.

to add on to sqflyer's post..... the apexi filter is by far the BEST cone filter, followed by K&N. Lots of tests have been done to confirmed this. sad to say, the HKS one rated the worst... those looking at HKS racing suction..... :D :D :D..... let me attach a report finding to discourage u to spend the 1k on an air intake.... :D

sorry to HKS racing suction owners.... seems like i got something against HKS products... :D :D :D
