Will my RX8 change me..?

On Saturday (while shopping at Tesco) I saw a lovely sports car parked in a diabolical fashion in front of the store on the kerb. 'The old me' would have thought '******'....however I projected myself forward a couple on months into my 'new 8' and I smiled, and thought...cool!! Am I going to turn into the sort of driver everyone hates..?? Am I going to turn into that '******'?

I think my face muscles will ache after a couple of days, as when I’m driving around I’m sure I’ll have a permanent grin.

You will change but people will like you. RX-8 owners are just nice people. :D And yes, you will see the world in a different way.

Guys, you'll be looking for the brochures to hand out ... so many people just walk up and talk to you about the car...

...sit and have a coffee 50m from your car and watch as it literally sucks people towards it.

and there's not enough botox in the world to stop you grinning :D

All you RX8 owners (to be) are looking through the world with RX coloured specs...People smile and nod but inside they are green.

As my grandad said to me after a really bad round of golf (I shot 85 playing off 9 h/cap) when I was 12 years old (I was telling everyone in earshot how unlucky I was).

"Save you breath Pillman" he said "1/2 the people in here wish you had of shot a worse round and the other 1/2 dont care...!!"

Depends what you were driving before but yes it will. Besides a different driving technique to suit the rotary you will be a lot more careful where you park and how to avoid door dents and upsetting others. Also cleaning the car wil become a pleasure and all food and drink strictly disallowed, children with dirty hands discouraged.

But don't go too far. I have known drivers on the TTC site to take off their wheels to clean properly deep down and drive very slowly after cleaning to avoid fly mess. Rememebre it is only a car and something to enjoy.

Its changed me already. I've carried out the following tasks in the last two days;

1. Trimmed the hedges around the driveway, so as not to have the car scratched.

2. Completed all the gardening (for winter) so nothing is going to distract me from my 8.

3. Decorated the lounge (new floor laid).

Just got to clear the garage of the old carpet, and all is ready for my 8.

BTW I HATE GARDENING.:D

This weekend I have to finish off painting the interior walls of my garage white, to make the car look better, and the floor, to seal in the dust.

What have I become....

It's changed me today because at last I've got the 'When will it be delivered' monkey off my back and I feel a LOT happier!

Plus I spent a recent weekend clearing out and painting my garage as well as building a ramp because the floor is a tad above the street level and I don't want the RX-8 being jolted.

Be warned that the floor paint is expensive. You need to seal the concrete with a clear polymer sealant first (about £20) and then a can of garage floor paint (not your normal thin gloss) is about £37. Roller it all on if you do it, I finished mine in a couple of hours and it's well worth it.

My garage walls has always been white and I have recently painted the door to match, but you've started me thinking, "Is it ready for the RX-8?", and having checked a few things the answer is "No".

The new car will be 21" longer and 5 1/2" wider than the old one. This is only 25" shorter and 29" narrower than the garage, with the entrance to the house being at the back and at the opposite side from the drivers door (the garage door is to one side, so I can't really go in the other way).

Jobs for between now and delivery:
  • Remove shelves from wall at side and back of garage, my head will be going there.
  • Find somewhere else to put the rubbish bin which is currently in the back corner. (and I know I should not have been contemplating keeping rubbish anywhere near the RX)
  • Remove the ladder hooks.
  • Fit some sort of bumper where the door will open.
  • Reconsider purchase of the reversing aid (or hang up a tennis ball)
  • Cancel the order? Nah, don't think so!

Some advice
The best type of door 'bumper' is anything made of foam - the innards of a cheap cushion for example.

Do not buy a reversing device. They are for girls. If you get one your friends will laugh at you. I will laugh at you. I would rather risk a scratch or small dent, which can be repaired, albeit at a cost, unlike a reputation which cannot. A tennis ball on a string is still mildly effeminate but no-one will know unless they go in your garage. I actually use a plank of wood, fixed where the wheels should finish. Of course I need to remember to adjust it for the new car to avoid an expensive error of judgement.

Cheers
JH

Well at the risk of being laughed at...

Reversing sensors came as standard on my BMW. At first, I thought they were a complete waste of time. In fact, an annoyance.
After a while I started using them - just as a backup to what I could see - I could justify that. I wasn't really using them, just making them less annoying.
Eventually I realised that they were useful and could detect things I couldn't actually see and made parking in the tightest spaces an absolute breeze.

Will I pay extra to have them on the RX8? Nope, but as a standard fitting they were well handy!

hmmm,

1) parking straight across 2 parking spaces to ensure noone parks next to you?
2) Garage floor paint - even when done properly (and I have honest) - on a hot day or even a filthy day, and you park overnight, you DO get paint on the tyres, and then patch marks on the floor of the garage as the sealant comes off, followed by the paint - particularly as you always end up parking in the same space each night. Althoguh my floor was done 2 years ago now.

The RX-8 is around 2" longer than my current car. As I have quite a short garage, I will only have around 4" left of clearance.

I currently reverse into my garage, and all along the back wall I have a piece of carpet, with 1" of foam behind it which I reverse into until I just touch it.

After a year I have no marks or scratches on my bumper so it seems to work fine.

The entrance to my house is right by the drivers door (as I had it moved), so all I do is close the garage door with the remote, get out of the car and open the door to the house.

The only other consideration I have is whether I will have room to open the rear door inside the garage, to put my briefcase and jacket on the backseat etc when I leave for work.

I just need to go down to B&Q now and get some velocity red garage floor paint!

Cheers
Mark

p.s. JohnnyCumLately - I see you are from Brum - Where have you ordered your car from?

How about some nice imported Italian tiles for the floor :D

BEWARE.

Putting hot car tyres (cos you'll have had fun) straight onto garage floors that are painted, some paints peel and stick to the tyres. Not nice for the floor or the car.

Carpet and foam already saved for puttign on wall.

Point about reversing aids. They are not infalable. 5 series BMW reverses up an incline up to a wall but aid does not see the small step. Driver relies on aid, no more rear valance!

Guys,

You lot are turning into DIY fanatics......

In saying that im building one of those "pole thingys" you put up at the end of my drive so they cant run off with car, however they could mo through my wifes daffodils, pansies through the 6ft conifer trees over the 2 ft wall and onto the pavement. If they managed that then all credit to them. As far as garage goes, hmm got the spare washing machine, 2 fridges and an enormous freezer, plus the old kitchen units along one side to look like i got some space to put my tools. My remote control tanks and plane sit on the floor so not sure if i want to move them particularly as thats the play area for me tankies. Think i will use my drive as a place to park the car for now....
