There are about 50 threads on this. Here is a link to the most recent one.

https://www.rx8club.com/canada-forum-35/gta-winter-drivers-73910/

I have Michelin Pilot Alpine and they are awsome and "V" speed rated (150mph or smething like that. Hardly any difference between the stock summers and the winters except its quieter with the winters.

18"s......

Most people did the math, and found that an 18" boot costs about the same as a 17" plus a cheap alloy wheel.

The math gets a lot better if you factor in multi seasons of removal/remount ($!) and the flexibility of putting them back on for an unexpected spring snowfall.

As the fellows mentioned too much info to rehash. I have the Hankook Icebears on 17's and they definitely came out alot cheaper than just tires for 18s. IME, the Icebears did quite nicely in the Calgary winter. My personal favorite is the Toyo Garrits (had it on previous cars) but price was a bit out of my range.

Blizzak LM-25's on the stock 18's. Haven't tried them yet since this is my first winter as well.

I hear the 25's do wear a little faster than the 22's, but they are stickier in the nasty Toronto winters.

I got the WS-50's last year. I had them on a month before it actually snowed!

I found them a little mushy on the highway (dry pavement).....but that was doing 'quick' lane changes at 140+ :D

In the snow and ice they were excellent. I was never stuck at all....only had one day where the plows didn't get out right away and because of the low ground clearance it was a little slow going (but not for lack of grip).

The WS-50's are made with the multi-cell compound so they were faster than the LM-22's (which are not multi-cell). My tires still look fairly new after one winter....and with the traction control on it kept the tires from spinning and wearing out too

I got 17" tires and rims from Dave Wood Mazda in Newmarket - $1499 plus tax.
The link below shows a pic of the rims (not the tires) - American Eagle in dark grey. Looks great on the VR :D

RX-8 17" Snows and rims

I purchased mine last year from Steve at Tiremag.ca 905-738-0710.
He had Toyo Garit (HR) with Kozo KZ227 wheels for $1480.00 ($1702.00 tax in)/installed and balanced.
I found after that deal was done that Cheap Tricks in Milton had IceBear 300W when stock was sold out across the GTA so you might try them first.

why did you guys go with 17" rims? Price? My neighbor told me you have to go to the dealership and readjust your computer.
I'm looking for rims and tires for $1000. Any ideas?

I have Kumho KW19 on my other car. Very good on snow condition, consider the price. But I'm looking to try something else on my new car.

Your neighbor doesn't know that RX8's in Canada do not come with tire pressure sensors. So, no computer reset stuff required.

Rims/Tires for a $1000? Possible, but doubtful. Don't expect much at this price. You may want to check out others selling their winter stuff for the RX8 and you should be paying less than $1000 for sure if they are used already.

MyRXdrug, I can't speak for everybody but I went with 17's because the tires are cheaper than 18's and I wanted a set of winter rims. The selection of tire sizes for 17's are MUCH wider than for 18's.

Rims/Tires for a 1000? Maybe for the steelies! Your dealership should have a little advertisement on that in the parts department.

I thought my car had tire pressure sensors. I think they do! The speedo, tach and tripometer are affected by different wheel sizes. I'll go check it out at my dealership on wednesday

If you bought your car here in Canada, you do not have TPMS. It's only on US spec. Changing wheel sizes rims will always affect the speedo/tripometer to a degree but this is no indication on whether you have TPMS. heck, even my stock tires are off by a bit according to my GPS.

Try this at a gas station when you're airing up the tires ... deflate one tire and see if the TPMS light comes on ... chances are nothing will light up on your dash.
