Plugs for $300???

I'm soon to hit 60kms on my '05, having had the sparkplugs changed at 12kms as part of the recall. Car's running perfect, but it's time for new ones.

Called 2 dealers, both wanted $300 plus tax...said the plugs alone are $250 for the 4! Is this BS?

Thoughts appreciated.

it is and it isnt BS. that is in fact what all the mazda dealers will charge in canada. however, the plugs shouldnt be that expensive. you can get them from the US cheaper, but sometimes its not worth the hastle. have you tried scarborough mazda though?

My dad works at a local parts store and the plugs are even more expensive through them and they get them direct from NGK as far as i understand. so if you want to be kind to your 8, you have to options. suck it up and get scarb mazda to put them in for you or order them online and save a few bucks but gain a bit of hastle

I'd say go online for that price.
fluid motorsports - $20 each -- $80 in total.
So factor in the exchange rate and shipping. its still hundreds cheaper

it might be a hundred cheaper, but i wouldnt say hundreds. you would be lucky to get the plugs for 150 after taxes, echange, shipping, and brokerage fees. then you still have to pay someone to install them if you dont have the means to do so yourself. Id say you be close to 180 landed at your door fro the plugs, then the 50 bucks or whatever for someone to install and taxes there you are still saving a bit, but you also dont have any sort of usable parts warranty. like i said, you'll save a bit, but for some people, that "bit" isnt worth the hastle.

They aren't that hard to install....if you have the means to remove the front drivers wheel and have the plug socket and ratchet, that's all you need. Can be done in a half hour easily.

If you can't remove a wheel, you might have the wrong car in your garage or you shouldn't be complaining about cost of automobile services. good luck!

true enough. and dont get me wrong, i've installed way more than my share of spark plugs on rx8s...just ask the locals. lol. plus, i work on mazdas all day, so i do it there too. still, i assumed the OP wasnt that DIY type just from reading his post. i may be wrong, but thats why i didnt suggest that. still, the labour isnt the expesive part, the plugs are expensive no matter how you slice it, and being in canada isntead the US, they are more expensive still.

georgetown is so much closer to guelph too

btw -- when i flooded mine awesomely and got it fixed at bay mazda in belleville they charged me 53.96 for 2 spark plugs. labour on top of this of course.

dude, no way about those plugs. that is less than dealer cost on the 2 plugs...either they lied, or they are in the habbit of paying part of peoples bills for them. that seems more like the cost of 1 spark plug...

yeah, im sort of in the habbit of recommending scarb mazda becaues it seems there is no one in this area anyways. no point in suggesting someone from toronto come to guelph for service, thats just silly.

so to the OP, you are more than welcome to come go guelph city mazda...although i've been fighting to get club members discounts on parts for a while now and they (management) wont get back to me. they havent said no, but still, i cant go telling people we do when its still up in the air. scarb mazda on the other hand has Al running the show and we all know what they do for the club.

greg: i got the 53.96 figure off the invoice... i just did a service today -- that's why i have the whole stack of invoices handy i guess

or maybe i got lucky and they didn't see that they undercharged me? lol

btw... how many hours of labour would you think a de-flood would take?

they charged me 3 on par or over you think?

If you go on ebay you can get plugs for fairly cheep, i think for plugs coils and wire it was around 330 can plus shipping. From what i hear that should be a good deal.

hes likely in georgetwon ontario canada....probably why he posted in the canadian section.

and john, 3 hours might make sense....every shop is different i think on the deflood thing. last time i deflooded someones car outside of work, it took me 2 hours to get the car running, then spent some time driving it. afterwords i would have changed the plugs so yeah, maybe 3 hours seems about right if they do it the old fashion way.

okay then for all the doubters that say that these plugs can be had for "hundreds less" across the border lets use herberts invoice as an example.

101.50 USD is approx 111 and change CAD right now, say 115 just be to safe.

thats 129.95 after taxes in ontario. and there is always the possibility that you get dinged for brokerage fees and all that stuff. last time i ordered something i got hit for 60 bucks on 4 coils. so 130 plus 60 is 190. i do understand that chances of you getting hit with brokerage fees are slim when using USPS but as far as im aware, not every vendor will ship across the border VIA USPS because it invovles more paperwork and red tape. So there we go, best case senario, its about 130. worth it for some, not for others. thats all im saying.

Thanks Greg and everyone for your tips, that's some expensive plugs! I used to be a DIY'er, but I'm finding less time now.

I'm all for supporting local dealers, but not at twice the markup! I think I'll try online and see how it plays out.

Dude I would have charged you 20 min I've been told I have the special de-flooding touch lmao!

As Greg said if you don't want the hassle go to Scarb Mazda, if you like diy order from fluidmotorsport on here ask them to ship it USPS, u will get it in a week with a total cost after exchange and all will be around what Greg said $130+/-. It's ez enough even a can do it. After my reset of the ECU tho, it took awhile for my car to settle down with idle, it was kinda weird. But smooth smooth now!

answer... it depends on the car and how the car was maintained. Some people need em after 60k.. others are still running just fine.
