Ontario E-test changes mean a fail without VFAD
So I was in to get my e-test yesterday (car finally sold, yay) and I did not have the VFAD hooked up -- mainly because the intake I bought was missing the vacuum hoses.
Well, test failed!
P2004 Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Open Bank 1
P2016 Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor/Switch Circuit Low Bank 1
After speaking to my mechanic, a VFAD bypass would very likely result in these codes. Other possible causes from a quick google would be cracked vacuum lines or a problem within the manifold.
What this means for people running intakes without the VFAD, I don't know, but it doesn't sound good! Hopefully these can be masked with a Cobb.

Same question. Just bought in the fall and didn't have the intake installed, hopefully a flash will be available by the time I need to test again

2004 is an APV code...
So is a 2106....
VFAD does not set a CEL as far as I know....otherwise there would be thousands of people running around with the code. There is no poition switch on the VFAD that would tell the ECU what position it is in
You will want to fix that....your car will run like crap at the top end with it stuck closed
It's not a DIY for the fain of heart...the easiest way to free it up is to pull the motor.
You might be able to remove the UIM and dump a bunch of seafoam or ATF in the runners and manually move the valve till it free's up...but you still have to remove a bunch of the top of the engine to get to it.
I had one car that I had to let sit for a week with ATF in it before the damn thing would let me remove the valve barrels from the irons......

I gotta do my test soon so I'll let you know how it goes. I'm putting everything back to stock except the exhaust muffler.
Really hopping I pass, I have a new cat (1000km), but that doesn't count for much on this new test.

I was referring to the VFAD code. The APV obviously needs to be fixed.
Although, after reading through again, I wonder if the VFAD has anything to do with it lol. Sounds like your mechanic doesn't know what he is telling you.

The VFAD doesn't send back any information to the ecu to cause a code. The only thing that could happen is you could loose vacuum if you didn't plug the hose. But, there is a one way check valve in the line that wouldn't allow that. Unless, you removed the whole line when you installed the intake.
Just put a short piece of vacuum line back on and plug it with a golf tee.

The MS CAI/AEM was sold as a street legal intake, so if the setup actually does record an error that prevents passing the test I would think Mazda would need to issue a flash to correct

I am using a Innova 3100f, works very well. MIL on (even when CEL is off) = fail.
It also tells you which systems are "ready". Any system not ready = fail.
Once all your systems are ready, the light on the unit goes green. Then you go for e-test.
I borrowed this one from a friend, but now I'm going to buy one.

Hate Scrape 8
Best advice I can give you is get a good code scanner.
