Wish I asked for my old cat when I got my new one could have just done that. Dual res best way to go for sound wise. But damn they stink!

chances are you'll get pulled over because of the stench of the dirty rotary + purple smoke before getting pulled over for the noise.
A couple of the dudes here are running a hollowed cat or straight pipe and have been pulled over acouple times for it.

i have the turboxs midpipe on my car, and the thing is pretty quiet, i have it mated up to the stock exhaust, at start up is sounds stock, i just get the rasp at around 4k and nice flames at around 9.3k
ive gotten pulled over but the cop never suspected it, i wouldve thought he smelled it, but i guess not

I run an open 3" exhaust on my FD (soon to be 3.5") and its louder then any dual exhaust RX-8 will ever be. I have never been pulled over and I street drive a lot even late at night around town. I have had many cops follow me but none pull me over since I did nothing wrong. The noise attracts attention but no cop will bother you unless you were doing something that you don't need to be doing. Reving for no reason, accelerating fast etc. Basically don't be an idiot where your not supposed to.
BTW, you will not pass emmissions without the cat but the performance gains are worth it for some.

ok so are we all saying a hp gain..or is this one of those things where people believe you get 15-25 hp for exhaust, and hp gain for those intakes., and maybe even a bit of horsepower for having a nice sticker opn the car..or one of those garbage cobbbb....600 bucks for losing 1 hp on the dyno...
personally just like the air intake and the cat back exhaust,...IMO everything you do that isnt from from motor to exit at the back you get nothing but noise....simple you cant put 200 dollar nikes on a fat chick and expect her to run///
my point i guess is am i going to "notice" hp or is it going to be in my head....like my louder exhaust lol;;;;;

Replacing the cat with a straight pipe would probably be the only mod on a stock RX-8 which you would feel the biggest difference.
The Cobb is useful only if you pick the right tune for your setup and fuel you use. The unit itself does nothing, its the tune you upload.
