Reduce size of plate

Here are a few pictures of our front plate. We reduced it to the minimum. I got a speeding ticket and still had no problem with the plate. Maybe he thought $300.00 was enough tax for one day. We went to the local OPP and they said it was okay.

Right-o. You're not even supposed to have one of the clear blue ones.

Like a lot of you are saying, the car looks nice without the plate. But it's pretty cheezy to gripe about being pulled over and ticketed when you are knowingly breaking the law.

true, but it is for something so small and stupid, You dont need the fron plate for anything, the sticker, (unless a truck) goes on the back, all the highway shots are of your back plate, i dont understand the reason behind having one?

I've been driving my boosted Miata for years with no front plate.
Had about 2 tickets over that term.
It's worth it in my opinion.
I'd spend more to make the car look better anyway, and the plate ruins the good looks of the car.

Still deciding on my RX8 since it's a daily driver.
If the MS body kit goes on I'll have to drive plateless.
That front end would look bad with a plate.

Maybe an offset plate bracket would be a good idea.
Does anyone make one for the 8?

In one of the "GTA mega meet" threads my silver 8 is pictured. My plate is mounted under the bumber behind the air dam. Best comprimise I found, and no legal troubles.

I asked a buddy who has an OPP father, who said that there is no way out of that ticket.

Anyway - took it to first appearance court, and beat it. Tell you how if you need.

The section of the HTA on my ticket says:
...
Permit requirements
7. (1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway unless,
(a) there exists a currently validated permit for the vehicle;
(b) there are displayed on the vehicle, in the prescribed manner,
(i) number plates issued in accordance with the regulations showing the number of the permit issued for the vehicle, or ...

I told the prosecutor that I complied with 7.1, 7.1a, but arguably 7.1b. I told him that the officer stated that the dashboard was not the place for my plate, so I asked him to clarify 7.1.b - i.e. tell me the "prescribed manner". He looked through the HTA for 3 or 4 minutes, mumbled "It's in here somewhere", but could not find it. Asked me if the plate was back on the front (yes), so wrote "dismissed" on the ticket and sent me on my way.

Happy to hear that. I came across this forum via goggle when I was searching for input on what the ramifications I might have to deal with if I go without a front plate.

I've placed an order for an AM V8 Vantage and wasn't keen on installing a front plate.

Somebody had commented that Insurance companies might look at "tickets" for no plate in a negative way? Is this true? I figured they only looked at the normal stuff - - accidents, speeding, careless driving etc. Thank you!

First, welcome to our club.
If you're buying a Vantage I'm going to assume that you can afford a 'no plate' ticket. Sometimes it's not a bad idea to have a 'technical violation' if you get pulled over. If the cop is feeling generous he can reduce the charge on the spot to a plate violation and send you on your way. I don't think that insurance companies will hold the plate thing against you. Just tell them someone stole it!

I guess I should at this point encourage you to take an '8 out for a test drive.

Firstly, Thanks for the reply and the input. As for affording the Ticket, barely, as I've spend all the pennies on the car

Always been a fan of all cars, I think the '8 is always been a car ahead of it's time. I've been enjoying reading through many of the posts on this forum.

On a aside, was curious why certain words get hyper linked? i.e Motor vehicle & test drive . . Is this how bills are paid on the forum, just curious. Thank you.

same prob in BC....I was told that when using the laser guns they need a highly
reflective surface to get a good speed reading, so they are trained to aim for the
headlights and license plate.....they hate NA Miatas with flip-down lights and no plate....lol...no target

Hey everyone.

I got pulled over a week ago, I live in Vancouver. That officer was actually nice, he just said "put it back on, take a photo, dispute the ticket, then show me the photo in court, then I will drop my charge". So my beautiful WB-8 is now cruising around town, with an fugly plate at the front. The ticket's $109, phew ~ lucky that I don't have to pay that ...

Narrow Plate Trick

Here's a trick. I was playing around with the front plate one day and relized that if you remove the mount, you can bend the top and bottom edges of the plate back so that just the numbers are showing. Then you can put the bolts back into the holes for the mount(leaving the mount off) thread them, but not tight. The plate will slide right into place with the part of the plate that is bent behind the bolts. now tighten down the bolts and the plate is held inplace and is much narrower and you can't see the bolts. It looks much better (looks european). I did this a year ago and had no problems, I even checked with a Cop, he said its fine . I have Pics if you want to see.

Not at all, it's up against the black plastic mesh grill, the same place where the mounting bracket usually is. If, by chance, any rubbing where to happen, the plate is smooth where it rests on the grill. I'll try and dig up the pictures to post. I've had no problems with the set up.

Been driving with the plate on the dash, had one Cop tell me to put it on the front during a seatbelt check, Eff that
I drive the only yellow 8 in eastern Ontario(that I know of), that should be plenty of Identification without even looking at my plates lol
BTW 110$ is the fine, I asked during my most recent speeding ticket......

Here's my compromise: a $3 black frame to cut down on the size of the white tooth. Looks acceptable from a distance:
