I don't think the preorder numbers can be high. Consider that Canada will only receive 700 RX-8s. Now, I'm not sure of the exact number, but I have heard that there are anywhere from 150 - 250 Mazda dealerships in Canada. Let's take the lower number. 700 / 150 = 4.67 (approx.) There are of course, factors to consider such as some dealerships having much higher sales numbers, so they will receive much bigger allocations. But, that gives you an idea of how many preorders (on avg) that a dealership may have available.
its kind of weird.. the guy i talked to about Edmonton dealership said they they dont think they will be getting any more than 3cars/dealer
but from the replied i recieved from the dealers in Calgary, one said that they cannot confirm how many will they be expecting to recieve while the other 2 dealer in calgary sounds like they know exactly how many they will receieve ( with response like we are expecting 8 and only 2 left for pre-order)
I'm closer to Oakville, but I promised I wouldn't go back there after they mounted my unidirectional summer tires backwards a couple of springs ago.
This will, believe it or not, be our family car...I figure it should be more than big enough for a little one that's on the way. Well, bigger than the Miata anyway, and it has four doors and space for a stroller and a diaper bag!
Oh well, the kid will arrive before the car, and I'll have a chance to evaluate whether I need all this space people keep talking about. My guess is that the dealer will be able to give the car to someone at that point regardless of my decision.

Hmmm - interesting! I spoke with the sales manager at Kramer on Thurs 02-27, and was told that they had deposits on 15 RX-8s already but would only be receiving 10...
holy **** you are right, i double checked where the email came from and the one w/ "a few" response came from another Edmonton dealer.. Kramer never replied..
But I just just got off the phone w/ Sunridge Mazda, they said they are expecting 8 and offically sold the 5th one last nite...
Im in edmonton and i wont be able to head back to Calgary til this weekend. I hope no one will take the last 3 spots before then
Here in Saskatoon, the sales manager at Mainway Motors said that he had taken two pre-orders so far, and that he hopes to get 'a couple' more RX-8s for the walk-in traffic.
In London, only expecting 4-5....I managed to snag the first one....a GT without nav...in sunlight silver..can't wait to get rid of my Mercedes c230 Kompressor coupe..disappointing to say the least...

Congrats! 4 or 5 only eh? Good thing you got one! :D
A long time ago I thought about getting the C230 Kompressor. Once I sat in it, and gave it a quick spin, I changed my my mind right away. As you say, extremely disappointing car.
Ok, well at risk of getting jumped on, here is some interesting information I have been given from what I consider to be a reliable source. Unlike a good journalist, however, I have not checked my source, so feel free to tell me its all wrong. Nevertheless, I am just the messenger.
(1) In the GTA alone, there are now more than 700 pre-orders!!!
(2) There was apparently a bit of heated discussion at Mazda Canada between dealer principles and Mazda Canada brass regarding whether or not they will look at the orders dealers have with respect to what should be ordered from Japan; apparently, Mazda Canada has (reluctantly, I understand) agreed to look at the orders from the dealers. Whether this influences their big Japan order, who knows. In the interest of customer satisfaction, I would think it should!!
(3) Dealers are being told that the cars are still scheduled to arrive in late May early June; apparently, the 700 are coming pretty much all at once.
(4) Orders to customers will be filled according to who got their deposits in first. At least at my dealer.
Now, these are MY musings, and NOT from my source:
I am certain that unless a dealer is really underperforming, they will get at least one car. Most will get three or four, and a few might get six or seven. The question is, will it be based on dealer volume? Customer satisfaction with the dealer? A combination? Are dealers like Brampton, who claim to be getting 8 or 9 really going to get 8 or 9? Or are they just padding their list?
There are roughly 150 Mazda dealerships Canada-wide. That's only 4 cars each, with a 100 left over. My thought is that if you are number 6 or 7 on a list at a dealership, you might want to question on what grounds the dealershiop thinks they will be allotted that many. (If you find out, let us know!)
I am just glad I put my deposit down last April. And I was still number 2 on the list !(ZoomZoom beat me by like 2 days!!!! )
You have to wonder though - since most dealers are saying that the deposits are fully refundable, how many of these deposits are actually solid commitments? Really, people have nothing to lose by putting down a refundable deposit, it holds their spot in line even if they haven't proven that they can come up with the $$. I hope, for my sake, everyone in front of me bails so that I can get my car.
I ordered from Downtown Mazda, and I'm apparently 6th on the list. My salesman told me that all deposits may not finalize. So I'm sure, most dealerships are overbooking, even if there is a cap - just in case certain deals don't go through for whatever reason, they still have buyers immediately set up. Only the customer gets screwed here, with false promises from the dealership.
By the way, this is my first post. Love this forum! Looking to trade in my 2001 Lexus IS300. Hope I get this car!
