Hi,
Looking at a car that was imported from the US back in 2007 (so I'm sure any required modifications were done long ago).. is there anything else I should be aware of when buying a car with US history (I looked through the "Importing.." sticky but that looked more like it was about the importing process itself, rather than buying something that was imported long ago)?

You shouldn't have anything to do.
The only modification I can think of is daytime running lights. Should be pretty easy to tell if those have been configured, or maybe they were standard in the US too by then.

Source: my parents have imported cars from the US.

Daylight running lights have not been required in the US. Some manufacturers have offered them here . But I don't know of any US-bound RX8 that ever came with them standard

On the safest side, goto MTO with the seller, present the ownership and have them tell you if all their requirements was satisfied upon importing. Please make sure that the custom and duties were also settled upon importing. Other than that, if it's an Rx8 then follow with the normal rx8 buying procedure :-)

Hi, I have 2 US cars at the moment and have had a couple of others.
There should be a "RIV" (Registrar of Imported Vehicles) sticker with it, one of mine is in the drivers door opening, other in glove box.
It could not have been licensed in Canada without going thro' that RIV inspection, which requires all taxes and the 6.1% duty to be paid.
The DRLs must have been ok then, if you are in ON though they will not be required to be working now for a safety; why you see so many cars without them working...
Reselling can be good and bad re value, but could be good for a RX8 as it could be returned to the states, read somewhere that Canadian R3s cannot be sold in the US.

Thanks for the advice! I drove the car last night and it's beautiful.. I put a deposit on it pending compression test results!

Somehow the DRL's have not been set up?! The car's been in Canada for nearly 10 years.. WTH?

Anyway I'm probably going to go ahead with it.. it's in beautiful condition aside from some borderline compression and small issues like the DRL's and a door actuator (driver's side door doesn't unlock with the fob).

Sounds good, I usually drive with full lights on anyway, safer...
I also add 200ml of 2-stroke oil when filling, figure it adds a bit of insurance, should make seals happy and maybe improve the low speed compressions.
Thought they were nice when new, only bought one a year ago and have enjoyed owning/driving it, lots of fun for an old man.
