Age (chronological not mental) here.

Hi folks,

I've just joined a few days back because my black RX8 GT is due at the dealer in about two weeks. Great site, great tips, great comment blah blah blah. I've learned quite a bit here.

I'm wondering what some of the ages are in this forum. I'm a 45 year old who dreamt of buying an RX7 through the 80's and into the 90's who could never get the dough together for either payments or insurance. My first car was a Chevette (with Canadian Tire plastic covers for bling) and my recent Celica has just ended its lease life. I live in midtown Toronto and will be using the RX8 as a daily 6K trip to work and more on the weekend, if I can get any mileage on Toronto's congested highways.

I've noticed there seems to be a good balance on this forum between young people who MUST immediately start messing with their rides and others who just appreciate the car and wouldn't think of clear corners (are they even legal in Ontario?). I noticed that on the Celica boards. Tons of Pacific Mall devotees who couldn't leave well enough alone...bodykits, spoilers from hell, neon, xeon, freon, bling, zing, schwiiing, etc. I've been educated about great exterior waxing stuff like that New Jersey showroom shine product, but outside of the obvious aftermarket ripoff junk, there doesn't seem to be much that this car needs right out of the factory.

If you're willing to satiate the feeling I have that I've bought a car too young for me to drive, please let me know I'm not alone and I'll be very happy. I'm in denial that so many under 25 drivers are able to obtain, insure and drive a classic like the RX8. Mom and Dad buying/helping/insuring has to have something to do with it. When I read posts complaning that the NAV system won't do DVD, I wonder just who this car is supposed to attract.

That's all. Flame away. Pleasure reading these posts and I'm sure it will be a pleasure when my car arrives in two weeks.

900 years old, have I become... Look as good, I do not.

No, you're never too young to drive this car. It's good for your soul, put it this way. There will always be people who have cars that they do odd things to (why, oh why, put a bodykit on a Porsche, for example), or who own cars that they will never drive properly. There will also be those who have no idea how a piston Otto cycle motor works, let alone Wankel cycle.

Hope the car is all you're hoping it to be.

No flames here from this 41 year old from Winnipeg.

Congrats on your new "midlife crisis" toy! :-) I bought my '05 Nordick Green this last summer and just love it. I can't wait to get it back on the road again this spring

I with you on all the mods and bling. None of the power mods do much and are a lot of $ for only a few ponies. And all the kids throwing on turbo's and superchargers just end up blowing their motors. That's ok, though, as they'll work out all the bugs and then we can take advantage of all their bleeding-edge work! <he he he>

I'm 41 and live probably just north of you as I'm at Avenue and Lawrence. I drive a Velocity Red. I bought in June '04. I still have the first car I ever owned, a '92 MX-3.

The only things I've done to the car: winter tires, mud guards, floor mats, and zaino. I'm not into all this other stuff. The car looks great the way it is!

Welcome.

btw, there was another thread out there a while back with us older people announcing their ages. I wouldn't say we're in the minority. But there is a good mix.

But I let my dad drive my car once in awhile because he's in love with it.. he's 56

Also I'm not a big fan of modding the exterior looks of the car.. Looks perfect the way it is

I'm 26. Bought the car when I was 25. Not sure if it was the smartest thing financially, but life's too short to worry about every little thing....

Surprisingly, I haven't received a ton of compliments about the car....maybe because there are a lot of 8's in Calgary or something

The 8 is not really my car (my brother's), but I occasionally steal it to drive, I'm 19 years of age. Not a fan of performance mods, or "hardcore" exterior mods. I'm a lip spoiler type of person(lip spoilers rule)...and not the type to glue on an aluminum wing. Only mods planned for the 8 are getting the OEM kit and a lip spoiler, and possibly all season treads.

I actually see quite a few middle aged folks driving the 8 in Calgary and Vancouver, so you're not alone. I think the only reason it seems like there are alot more younger 8 owners, is that the middle aged ones don't tend to join rx8club.

I agree that there are many 8's in Calgary, but I have received quite a few compliments of the car since receiving it in November 05. There are WAY fewer 8s in Vancouver.

50 Bought the 8 May 2004. Always intrigued by the Rotary Engine, I think I'm approaching 30 mentally and don't expect to catch up to the chronological number.

I think there are quite a few "middle-aged" that have joined rx8club.com. Have a look here...

I'm 39 - bought my 8 this past May. I love it the way it is, plus I have other things to spend money on instead of Mods - like shoes... - yes, I am female.

I'm 26 (will be 27 next month) and just signed the papers on my black GT this morning. The car looks very classy as is, and I have NO intention of modding its already pristine look. I'm still debating whether or not I want the satin finish gas cap for it...but I do know that I need the $398 chrome side finishers for the side air vents....

1964 What a great year, do you know where I could find some good wine harvested that year?

Yeah, I'm 41 and I don't classify myself in the middle age category. I bought my 8 last year and it wasn't a mid-life crisis toy, hell my life has always been a crisis.
The Rx-8 was my first sports car, I aways was a sports car fanatic but never could afford to own one. I lusted over the FDs, Supras, and the Zs. But my motto is "Own a car, don't let it own you". So in my twenties and thirties, I always had money in my pocket by owning used econo cars and trucks. I love pickups, I sure do miss my last one.

im 19... yea my parents helped me get the car.. and just because i modded it does not mean that i don't appreciate what my parents offered me or that i didn't appreciate the rx-8 for what it is...

however i still haven't met a person who doesn't think my modded rx-8 looks like its almost in a completely different league than a stock rx8

there is nothing wrong, with enhancing the already fine looks of a car... kinda like a boob job on a already hot girl jks

Yea! you have to get the strakes. W/o the strakes my black GT looked odd. Once you put the strakes on it will really bring out the side curves of the car.

I hope Brampton mazda gave you a good deal, cuz i got a shitty one from them

Good post.

I'm with you on some points and not on others. I don't see why it would matter if mom and dad help to get someone into an RX-8. I think that's great... lucky them.

As far as the DVD playing NAV system, I'm with you. The point of this car is not to entertain with something you can do at home, but with its handling prowess and one of a kind engine. But, if that's what someone likes, then although I don't agree, it's still not wrong per se.

Congrats on keeping sight of what you've wanted. Enjoy the car.

To respond to the actual point of the tread, personally I'm 28. Don't have an RX-8, but an '89 RX-7.

Being 32 now I've had my 8 for almost a year and it's my first brand new car. Although it was the best car on the road for me, it wasn't quite perfect just yet.

I bought a set of beautiful 19" rims that match the silver, I did tint, put on clear corners since the orange stands out like a sore thumb on the silver (Yeah they're legal, I checked) and I added the painted strakes. I also rounded out the somewhat hollow Bose with some bass and a set of tweeters. I even added a canzoomer because I'm a techie and I truly enjoy spending hours with my laptop refining the powerband and feeling the response.

IMHO Customization is like adding your own personal stamp. What I'm saying is that I'm making it truly mine allowing me to enjoy it more, and that's something you just can't buy prepackaged.

my cronological age: 24 (just turned yesterday-mon)
my maturity afe: 12 (as my friends put it).

I am soon getting my rx8 too... I feel it is never too late to get the car u always want.. i just want it now so that i can enjoy it while i am young... life is too short for me to wait for a later date... besides.. 4 years of waiting for a car and still wanting it .. is enough for me.

Thanks all for your great replies. And to the younger members, I didn't mean to suggest that parents helping with the purchase was a bad thing. Your mom and your dad are my peers. And we seem to have limitless amounts of money for our kids. I know a couple who bought a Civic Si for their kid...he NOZ'ed it and blew the engine two days after taking delivery. And mom and dad are blaming Honda!! And how many 40 year old parents are defrauding insurance companies by listing themselves as primary drivers when their brood are farting around with engine mapping? Truth to be told....when I got my Golf TDI a few years ago I was on a few message boards that suggested every old fart owner was blowing up engines re-mapping the engine control for a few stupid HP.

I am psyched about this car....45 or 19 it's a pleasure to drive and I'll report back on that floor mat and footlight accessory upgrade I bought! See you on the road. As abs016 writes, it's never too late to get the car you want!

I'm 45 and bought the '8 'cus I loved the car but now a few months down the road I've added painted strakes and clear corners. I just could not help it; I had to modify it. This car is an obsession. Help me before I mod again!!! Wait, I hear a new exhaust system calling to me... and some sway bars...and a new intake and ....
