Tools for brake calipers / bumper grill mod

Hey guys

I'm planning on doing the brake caliper and while i'm at it, the grill cover for the oil cooler on the weekend and just wondering what tools I might need.

I've got jack stands and the tools that come with the car but apart from that not much else in my garage ATM. I will pick up some new ones but wondering what would be a good investment for this job and future mods.

I'm thinking a good socket set and a torque wrench?

Decent set of metric sockets up to about 21mm will be handy.

Phillips head screw driver.......hell just get on of those ones that have phillips and regular and have two sizes of ech.

2 1/2 ton or 3 ton floor jack. Not really needed, but much better than that crappy jack you get with all cards nowdays.

I have a little handy short screwdriver looking thing, but the end is like a little crowbar, it's excellent for removing those annoying little black plastic push pin things!

To take the nose off, it's basically four bolts(10 or 12mm I think) and a whole bunch of those push pins(in the wheel wells). There's also more push pins once you lift the hood to get to the four bolts mentioned above. After that, it's 10 screws(phillips) underneath the front bumper on the plastic tray. If I remember there are kind two rows under there..........one row has about seven across and the other row(which is on the inside of the seven) has ten, and those are the ones you want. Oh yeah, and there are two phillips head screws(one holding each side marker). Biggest issue on the side markers is finding that little plastic arrow thing that needs to be pushed down when extracting the side markers....just don't brute force it out. Find that little plastic tab and push down with one finger until it's free.
Oil cooler screens slide right in after just pulling back the rubber gasket. You'll see it! My directions said to use soap and water to help slide it in, but I had no issues and didn't use it.

Not sure what you are doing with the calipers, but I think those bolts are 14mm and there are two on each caliper.

When you say "Do the calipers" what do you mean? paint them? In which case you need a caliper spreader. very simple tool, about 15/20$ at Autobarn/repco. Just pay attention to which pads are where and the little "spring" devices that sit in the top/bottom of the pad bay. Dont loose them.

PS: Always a good idea to start a bolt by hand than use the torque wrench. They are fine for undoing, but a bitch when you mess up going in.

Cheers

Andrew
