Well to start with, RX implies Rotary engine. This has a 2.5L V6.

I think the consensus is that if there is to be a successor to the RX-8, we probably won't see it before 2009 (or the 2010 US "model year", which is the same thing). There's been a lot of conjecture in this forum, and the debate has swung between what people would like to see, and what Mazda might actually do. The Senku concept perhaps gives some clues as to how Mazda might be thinking for their icon car: a rotary/electic hybrid which is pitched a little further upmarket to the current RX-8. As I've mentioned before, Mazda have been looking at rotary hybrids since the late '80's. Overall, you've got to imagine how Mazda might handle their product spectrum. At the sporting end of their range, I can see continuation of the MX-5, a conventionally powered hard top two/three seater coupe (see the Kabura concept) for the mid-range and a bit more upmarket conventionally aspirated rotary with perhaps electric hybrid.
To get back to your dilemma: my bet is no RX-8 replacement before 2009. Aside from "specials" with different colours and interiors and bells and whistles, I wouldn't imagine any radical changes to the current model.

What all of you may not know is that Mazda almost did an Rx-9.
They got so close that they printed the literature even. Meaning you can still find factory workshop manuals for the Mada RX-9. They are rare these days but do exist if you are patient enough to search hard.
Mazda Australia where set to release them too & imported a couple as "evaluation" models to do the car show rounds.
By now, your wondering when all this happened......??
1980
Back then, Mazda still had plans to export more than just the RX-7 with rotary power so the LA43S version Luce/929 series was to get the nod as another rotary powered export. Mazda Oz turned it down in the end (surprise surprise) Its a shame the rotary version never went ahead as these RX-9's would still on the roads today. How often do you see an LA4V V version 929 these days...... Never.
Great product, rotten company syndrome strikes again

Just learnt that Mazda DID EXPORT THE RX-9 after all.
Apparently, they went to Europe from 79-82.
In Japan, it was a Luce (rotary or piston)
In Oz, it was a 929 (piston only)
In Europe it was a 929 / RX-9 (piston or rotary)
Picture proof for the non believers shown below..............
