RPM vs Fuel Consumption

I usually change my gears around 4000rpm
But my fuel comsumption is around 14L/100km
I got my car for 5 weeks now.

As I read from other thread, most people gpt around 12L/100km.
I just wondering when did you guys change your gears as well as your fuel comsumption?

I'm getting 12.5L/100km - mostly city driving, odd bit of highway and the odd trip to some windy stuff when the opportunity presents itself. I'm using BP ultimate exclusively as I use a BP fuel card.

My driving style changes to suit the conditions, mostly the amount of traffic. In traffic where there's no opportunity for some fun I'll change as low as 3000 rpm and use 5th and 6th. If I can't have fun I may as well save on fuel.

However, my preferred driving style is to change around 4,500-5000 around town when it's not too busy, as this leaves me well into the 3000's when I upshift so there is still plenty of grunt, and I don't abuse the gearbox.

Spirited driving... now that's a completely different story.

Was quite amazed today when I took my 8 for a spin around the Cotter loop here in the ACT... reasonable road, speeds up to 150 (don't tell the fuzz ) and spending almost all my time at 5-9k, I did 120kms today and the guage is only at the 3/4 tank point... that's about 12-13l/100km... so what gives? Read a post in the general forum, talked about turning off stability and traction control (hold down the DSC button for ~5 seconds, turns it all off) which claimed much improved performance... if I get a spare hour or so tomorrow, I'll do it with all that stuff on and let you know how it goes.
