My secret: I rang the parts department of my friendly Mazda Dealer. They quoted me $12 (from memory) for the genuine oil filter. For that money, I don't now why I would bother taking a risk with anything else.

On what objective criteria is it measurably better?
There is an oil filter thread timbo that carries out a scientific test of various filters.....and the Mobil 1 filter came equal first IIRC.....I'll see if I can find it later.

Thanks 'mez -- that boggled my mind IME, oil filters -- provided they have some reputable brand, and I could not see any reason not to use the OEM -- are a commodity. But it is good to see someone has put them to the test!
