Fuel injector cleaner
My car has always run on Vortex 98 for 100, 000k, with only two tanks of E10 as an experiment. Have had 3-4 episodes of the car pinging and missing on extremely hot days but no problems on cool days. The car has been to the dealer, passed a compression check, passed a cat check, had new coils plugs and leads and had no codes thrown on the PCM. Last week in the hot Sydney weather the problem appeared again with pinging at about 6k rpm and loss of power at that level. I also noted that fuel economy had not been as good as it had been about a year ago.
I threw a bottle of Caltex Techron fuel injector cleaner in the tank and the difference has been amazing. THe exhaust note in the car has become slightly lower, the car idles totally smoothly now and the acceleration has improved (checked on racechrono). I can only surmise that one of the fuel injectors had been dirty and not been working properly causing all my problems . NO more pinging on hot days now and have just done 160km on the first quarter of a tank , whereas I would normally get about 130.
May be worthwhile for everyone to use a fuel injector cleaner every 20-30,000 km.
