EOI: Proposed Tasmania Meet (Targa Weekend) Summer 2006
OK... further on from the Wakefield W/E I'd like to continue the discussion about going to Tassie.
From the other thread it appears that we may at the dawn of annual national RX8 meets :D
But Tassie is best done in Summer.. so I'm told... I'm suggesting that we aim to do it Jan or Feb 2006, I know it's a long way away, but if we're doing Wakefield in Oct/Nov I doubt that many will be able to do another big trip before Xmas. In addition to this, from about mid Nov onwards, the silly season really starts to ramp up.
I'm happy to try and organise as much as I can, but I've never been to Tassie, so if someone else could suggest a route , then we can take it from there and others can indicate if they're interested or not.
At this point, the exact dates are flexible....

you can go to www.spiritoftasmania.com.au to find out the exact details..
But for us Sydney siders, I think it would be best to drive down to Melbourne and get the ferry from there.
1. It would work out cheaper ... about $160 each way
2. Ferries leave twice a day from Melb to Davenport vs once a week From Syd
3. Drive to Melb is about 8 hrs, plus ferry is about another 8 hrs which is 16 hrs all up.. Ferry from Syd is about 21 hrs to Davenport.

If cost is a concern, maybe some of you can pair up and split costs for 1 car.
Driving down to melbourne, theres still the cost of petrol. weigh out the difference between drivin down and shipping down. I havent looked at the costs myself. but yeh for sure summer time is best or definately not winter. I froze last time i did dat, i went to tassie by the ship and we took a car, if u think melbourne has cold weather well.. tassie is worse in my opinion canberra is somethin shocking too, our plane couldnt land cuz of the fog :p

The Boss and I have booked to go to Tassie in December from Sydney. It's not the cost of the car that's expensive ($10 or $20, I can't remember which) - it's the cost for the passengers. Still, I reckon it will be worth it to enjoy driving the RX8 rather than some boring rental car.

I guess everyone had to come to Melbourne first... but yes it is too hard to plan at the time of the year... considering I am about to move house and change job

I'm interested. Suggest late January or early February.
Those with spouses and/or children can sell it this way:
You drive down to Melbourne and go over on the ferry with the rest of the hoons and spend a few days trying not to kill yourself on Tassie backroads. The bride (and children if you've got 'em) fly down to either Launceston or Hobart and join you for a romantic/family holiday for the rest of the time.
May not suit everyone but that is how I plan to sell it if I go.

I'm up for a Tassie trip, February would be cheaper on Spirit of Tasmania as January is peak. I can't remember the actual savings.
If we can get some numbers I can check here at work if I can get some kind of group deal booking with Spirit of Tasmania (I work for a travel company that has a retail travel agency also. I don't know what the deal is with Spirot of Tasmania so I can't guarantee getting any discounts).
From the first thread discussing Tassie here are the Costs 1 way, from Melbourne & Sydney
Mel - Devonport -
1 person, Car, Cruise Seats - $145 each way (2 people $231)
1 person, Car, Business Class Seats - $178 each way (2 people $297)
1 person, Car, 1/2 Twin Inside Cabin - $334 each way (2 people $389)
1 person, Car, 1/2 Twin Porthole Cabin - $347 each way (2 people $405)
1 person, Car, 1/2 Person Deluxe Cabin - $542 each way (2 people $703)
The trick would be getting a fare that allows 4 cars and those 4 people sharing a 4 person cabin.
Would reduce the cost significantly. Would probably need to contact Spirit of Tasmania directly.
Or 2 cars with driver & partner sharing a 4 berth cabin.
Sydney departures are Sunday 2pm or Tuesday 4pm. Devonport Departures are Saturday 1pm or Monday 3pm.
That would confound my plan, unless the Sydney siders did a week and I did 1 day )
Syd - Devonport - includes free buffet dinner & brunch
Car - $59
1 person, Car, Hostel Bunk (dormitories) - $239 each way (2 people $419)
1 person, Car, 1/2 Twin Inside Cabin - $509 each way (2 people $659)
1 person, Car, 1/2 Twin Porthole Cabin - $524 each way (2 people $679)
1 person, Car, Inside Double Cabin - $518 each way (2 people $671)
1 person, Car, Porthole doublebed cabin - $539 each way (2 people $699)
Comparing Twin Inside Cabin for 2 people the saving is $170 driving to Melbourne.
Sydney also has only 2 trips a week, Saturday and Monday, depending on how long people wanted to stay in Tassie that requires pretty much a weeks committment. Melbourne is every day of the week.

For the sake of reduced confusion with the "2005 Nationals" under proposal now, could we rename this thread a little? (I can anyway, but wanted to be diplomatic about it.)
I'm unlikely to be able to do such a long trip, considering it is only a short while after what is proposed for September.
It would be a "traditional" thing to not plan for the 2006 even until the sucessful end of a 2005 National meet.
Cheers,
Hymee.

Yes, please rename if possible. I didn't want to say anything earlier for fear of being branded a meglomaniac control freak :p but certainly don't want to dampen enthusiasm and participation in these types of activities. The fact is that 22-23 October are the only available dates for Wakefield this year. If we can't get enough for that, then this might be the next opportunity...but we need to bear in mind the incredible inertia of apathy, and get one successful thing happening first.
So, please just rename the thread to avoid confusion and by all means gather and share information to enable planning... and I will help as much as I can, too
Oh yeah, I love to be in on it, too :D

Call me a megalomaniac control freak if you like (most do) but so as not to confuse people with the annual Targa Tasmania, how about:
"Proposed RX8 Targa Tasmania Summer '06"
Okay, I'll shut up now.

So can't it still be in Summer 2006, about 12 months after the 1st one, instead of 3 or 4 months?
Cheers,
Hymee.
BTW - Thread edited. We better be careful of calling it "Targa Tasmania" though. I will have to bring a Targa Florio with me, for those who know what I mean. :p

I can recommend Quell... Take one 24 hours before depature, one per day, and never look at how the bow/stern and the horizon go up and down up and down... :D
Sorry guys, but this one is just too far for me...
