View Full Version : American Football, Love It, Hate It or Just don't Get It?
Just finished watching "Any Given Sunday" and DVD. (killing time till my motor arrives, and this is the lounge after all)
Even for a Scot I thought it was a cracking film, but I've never been able to get into american football in general.
Am i in the minority?

I love american football and played it through High School. I used to work with two guys from England and Ireland and they could never get into it. Likewise, I'm the same way about soccer.
The bad thing is that I watch too much of it on Saturdays and Sundays for 5 months!!!:o
cueball 08-30-2003, 03:44 PM I love it as well.
I don't play but was brought up watching it every Sunday with my dad.
Great Stuff.:)
Sputnik 08-30-2003, 04:47 PM Alot of us in the States not only grew up with it, but played it as kids in some form. And it's alot easier to get into watching a professional series when you are familiar with it, and can relate to it.
Which is pretty much what Revhappy said.

ToRX-8orToZ 08-30-2003, 09:14 PM There are people that don't like the "real" football?
::ducks all the historical remarks from "soccer" fans::
IIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
ST.James 08-30-2003, 11:51 PM Well coming from a hispanic family I grew up loving both american football and world football (soccer). I played both in high school, although I enjoyed soccer more but in football you got more style points with the girls for playing. As for getting it American football is hell of alot easier to play and watch.

It depends on the level. There is no comparison between professional football and professional soccer. There isnt a sport that can eat a mans body up like pro football.
ah soccer, the beautiful game, well occasionally.
fortunately the mighty 'gers have just put the hapless Dundee United in their place (despite us loosing our best player to an english team the day before) 3 goals in the last ten minutes, theirs scored by and ex gers player, all played out in glorious scottish sunshine (with standard freezing wind)
still on soccer, it was interesting to see that Manchester United only managed to attract "reasonable" crowds for their tour of the states during the close season, for a team used to sixty thousand crowds a week and fanatic fans round the world I take it Nike money played a part in their choice of holiday destination.

Well...overall I'd say hockey is just as physically demanding, even though it's not as high-impact on the feet....and yet they play 84 games in a regular season, and many in the playoffs...not 16-1-1-1. Then again I dont play pro sports, but...
Futbol is definitely more demanding on endurance as far as the feet go, but not so on the contact. I like watching a good euro league soccer match - when the guys have a lot of skill, it can be beautiful. I just hate the dramatic acting side of the game - worse than street basketball.
I like all three. Hockey->Football->Futbol

I would think Aussie Rules Football players might have a different point of view regarding this.. :p

I wonder how long the average career is in the Australian version? I know in the NFL that the average career for a running back is something like 2 or 3 years. I would think on average, the NFL player are bigger and faster. I also think that the pads (especially shoulder pads) allow players to make impacts at higher speeds. Does that offset for the barebones approach of the Aussis's, I'm not sure?
Either one of these sports is an Orthopedist's best friend. :p

No doubt a rough sport, but it can't compare. Rugby players arent 380lbs., or 270 pounders that run the 40 in 5 seconds.
Magic8 08-31-2003, 11:11 PM I like American Football, but I like college football more. It's more dramatic and more unpredictable, at least in my opinion.
I got into watch football/soccer after watching the last Women's and Men's World Cup. Both were really exciting and had some very memorable matches.
I remember when I was in Mexico, during Mexico's quarterfinal match, we had to stop production for two hours. Noone was at the plant during that match.
A game I don't get, even after watch several matches, is cricket.

ST.James 08-31-2003, 11:47 PM man don't even get me started on cricket I had a couple of blokes try to explain it and try to make it seem fun, but what ended up happening was I was even more clueless and still thought how could someone think this could be fun. Although I did pick up a love for rugby from them. Too bad I'm too small to play though, some of the old tapes that they showed me had some huge guys knocking the snot out of the smaller players. In american football I at lest had some padding. well maby I could be a hooker. :p
I love, and I mean LOVE American Football. You have to understand the strategy involved. It's one of the most strategic games there is.
Then there's the physical aspect. You have to have played to understand how good it feels to get a really good hit on someone.
That's my opinion.
GO RAIDERS!!!!!!! :D
MrWigggles 09-01-2003, 11:46 PM For the people in the rest of the world who said they hate it:
Keep kicking that stupid ball around the pitch until someone gets lucky enough to score a goal, then riot when you whip the other team 1 to 0. Wow!! You kick their butts big time didn't you?

LOL! That's the part I like best in "World" football. After I'm half asleep from the boring match, I wake up and I enjoy watching the riots & mayhem. Love that action! Especially when people get shoved into the moat.
"GO STEELERS"
renegade_si 09-02-2003, 06:29 PM oh dear, this was just asking for trouble. Still as I love trouble
media....ad breaks....3 hours....zzzzzzz
Red Devil 09-03-2003, 11:01 AM College Football all the way, it just makes Saturdays for me. Tailgating, the rivalries, and fans have so much more ability to get into it than the pro's, at least in my opinion.
I think soccer is allright, and played it as a child, but I can only get into the sport during the World Cup. I think that's a great time, always pull for the Italians and the Dutch.
RXhusker 09-03-2003, 11:08 AM I guess that why we have golf -- to bridge the differences in sporting tastes. We all play golf with basically the same rules, same equipment and same frustrations -- but it is loved the world around :D
I better go hit a few balls over lunch :D
Golf!?!?!? Talk about B-O-R-I-N-G!!!!!
I've played twice and what a miserable time that was. I felt like I should've been running between holes, or something to speed it up. My gosh, that's the biggest waste of 4 or 5 hours anyone ever came up with.
Okay, okay, that's just my opinion. I know a lot of people that absolutely love it. Including some of my very good friends. I just don't get it, but that's just me.
Back to good ol' merican football. I'll take the NFL over college anyday. There's just more parity. Although I watch college, too. But being that I went to Baylor, I don't have a lot to get excited about. I do think they'll beat their D2 opponents. Maybe!
Go RAIDERS!!!!

not entirely the same, you guys in the states have some wee guy called tigger who cheats by hitting the ball too hard.
(but we've got big colin, the tabloid media's favorite golfer? tantrum anyone)
blizz81 09-04-2003, 11:08 AM I like playing golf, but if we're still on the spectating note, I have a hard time watching it. I'll tune in to the majors in summer during the sporting drought.
So far this football season has been awesome - and with the 2 32" TVs in the living room setup, it could only get better with a tivo. Ahhh, bachelor life come weekends in the fall...
I still stand by hockey in the end though :)
IwantONE2 09-04-2003, 11:33 AM LOVE IT
Been a Viking season ticket holder for 5 years. I could probably count the Viking games I've missed(live or television) over the last 20 years on one hand.
Tailgating is awesome.
I like basketball, baseball, and hockey too, but football has such a huge advantage because every single game is extremely important. Basketball doesn't even get interesting until the playoffs.
rich606 09-04-2003, 12:45 PM I wish you would use the correct terminology:
It is called American Football to differentiaite it from the real game of football (you know the one where you kick it with your foot & get penallised for picking the ball up!!)
& while we're on the subject if you want a good sport to watch look out for the rugby world cup in the Autumn coming from New Zealand & Australia. A hard & hugely enjoyable sport without the need for wearing armour!!
(You do end up with ears that resemble vegetables though!)
as a scotsman i chose to pretend that we aren't playing in the world cup this autumn..
and i'll thank you not to disrupt my self denial.
(hell we've got more chance of our football team trouncing germany in the qualifiers than scotland winning anything other than the wooden spoon at rugby)
It may be called American Football where your from, but here we call it Football. That other game that no one cares about is Soccer.
Sorry, I'm a little feisty today. The NFL (not NAFL) starts tonight!!! Are ya ready fer sum football!!!!!!!!!!:D
ZoomZoomH 09-04-2003, 04:26 PM w00t! hail to the Redskins!!!
futbol is easier to pick up and find a place to play (kick ball into goal, celebrate like madman), football on the other hand takes a bit of pre-training to have fun with (no, backyard hail mary football games are NOT fun) ;)
my god scotland beat someone at real football !!!!
okay so the faeros are just a tiny country with part time players, but it's still a win. (and three qualifying points)
Shame our rugby team got absolutely stuffed today.
AfroCreame 09-21-2003, 12:47 AM GOOO COWBOYS...at least Try to! LOVE FOOTBALL!!!! GET READY TO RUMBLE!!)(!*#)!(@#@)(I#Ew
