I have had both the Fog & the Puddle Lamps installed for almost a year now. Absolutely zero issues. These are hand made and the quality is nothing less than an OEM look at 1/3 of the cost. The craftsmanship that goes into this product is Top-Quality.
The Rear Rotary Fog Lamp is molded after the (U.K. Market) Lamp & the Side Mirror Puddle Lamps are molded after the (Australian Market) Lamps.

OK ... obviously I won't ship until I get an address and PayPal, so the odds of it shipping go up with that ;) I'll do my best, but lets just say Wednesday will be the cutoff. Any orders received by Wednesday will ship the following Saturday. With this first week being "short" I can only say I will do my best. It is up to you as to when you choose to pay. I don't think I'll get rich off of the interest regardless ;)

Umm, just a little side tracked!!! LOL!
Really though... It is not that hard at all, I know of several people that have done the install of all skill levels from NONE to PRO and everyone said with all the images in the instructions there is absolutely no way you can go wrong. Some it took several hours to complete while others have done it in under an hour I took my time and I think it took me just under 2 hours.

BTW I did get that OIL PCM and though she does seem to run better I still get that odd Hi-Speed Oscillation thing I was telling you about.. Even after the Major Recall flash? I guess my girl dun like no Cruise Control at 80 +, While at the Dragon I forgot to set the Cruise at 125mph when we were all going to Whitewater Rafting. We held that speed for about 5 minutes to catch up to the rest of the pack. It would have been nice to see if it did it at that speed...
Anyway back to the GB!

Hey Derwankel,

If you already have the OEM rear accent installed do you have to pull it off to get the fog lamp in?

Yes you do, but it comes off fairly easy with a bit of heat from a hair dryer. Just clean off all the old glue/tape with a bit of acetone or bug-n-tar remover to get a clean surface for re-attaching it.

Just to Clarify....
Derwankel is selling a minimum of 50 units under each category for a total of 100 units.
So that is 50 Puddle Lamp Sets & 50 Rotary Fog Lamps. If 50 Puddles are sold way before 50 Fogs are, the GB may still run, but only Fogs being sold.
That will be completely up to John though and we are still 25 units away from that point anyway.

John,
I think Marquis just copied Marvin_Rocks post and then added his name to the bottom. He does want Puddles only.

I did receive your e-mail and replied a couple of days ago. Regarding payment process, it is covered in the forst post of this thread, but basically it is send funds via PayPal to sales@rx8fun.com. It is OK if you pay via your son's PayPal, just make sure you note your screen name and shipping info in the PayPal Notes.

Yes, but unfortunately it would cause the car to explode. If you dare to try it, I would probably run a wire from the fog lamp lead in the fuse box to your rear fog lamp. I would think that's the simplest way.

Parts has been installed.

A few reminders :

when trying to pop the door panel off the door. keep in mind that some of the fastners might not *pop* off, instead it just stayed on the door. becareful when you try to remove it with a screw driver because you might break it and/or cut your finger (happened to me, no big deal, I have some backups around .... finger bleeding :SHOCKED: )

Also. careful when you try to take the side mirror out of the door, right after you take 3 bolts out (the ones that secure the side mirror), there a tab on the TOP of the mirror, take the mirror out by pushing it *upwards*. So you will not break that tab.

While you took the door panel out, you guys might want to do the rattle hunt as well :) (Search for rattle hunt 2006)

I think it has been done but you will need to run a wire all the way to the Fuse Box. Lemme research to see if I can find a DIY for it.

Well, first of all, thanks for all the nice comments. It is gratifying to see fellow enthusiasts appreciating the products. That is of great importance to me.

On the wiring of the the Rear Rotary Lamp to the front fog light switch. It is, I'm sure, "possible". However, I never was able to follow through to a conclusion as it just wasn't designed for that specific purpose. Most folks want a nice clean way to dress up that rear rotary accent and are not interested in crawling through the trunk and rear seats and carpeting to tie into a switch. If you are handy, I'm sure it could be accomplished.

As for the bulb, Tamas is correct, it is a 194.

On the smoked lens, yes I have made them in the past, but they are not part of the group buy, sorry.

Derwankel- the lights are BITCHIN! Thanks for sending them so quickly! One thing I was surprised to find is that the LED's that I put in dim just as well as the incandescent bulbs! Just thought I'd let everyone who reads this thread know that it's an option.

I believe an LED for the puddle would be a 194. I went with an LED in the fog light and thought it matched my LED rear taillights well. I believe that was a 194 also.

I had some spare 194 LED's from when I switched out my original LED front marker lights with those new crazy super brights from v-leds dot com. The ones I ended up using were 194 6-LED's, super-white. They give that HID blue look, and are very clean. FYI, you can use these same bulbs for your front marker lights (the little round guys that come dull-white from the factory), your map lights, and your license plate light. I'm sure there are other applications, but those are all the lights I swapped out. It's amazing how much $30 worth of LED's can dramatically change the look of your car! Just a word to the wise- keep some extra around. I've had my front LED's in for 4 months now, and had to change them the other week from some burnout.

I don't have the rear foglight, but provided the bulb housing is the same, I don't see any reason why not.

Here is an update. I was slowed a bit this weekend due to attrending a wedding and attending activities for the kids. I also did not receive my superwhite lamps until Saturday so these shipments were delayed until tomorrow (marked as 10.15 below). They are boxed up, addressed and ready to go out the door.

Please send me a "Puddles" kit. I don't even have the chrome bumper accent at this time, so the fog light would get rather pricey ($65 + $70 for the acent ring). PayPal is my next stop.

If you'd like a Rear Rotary Lamp that works WITHOUT the OEM rear accent, those are available in this group buy as well foir the same price. It is slightly larger than the one for use with the OEM accent as it fills the entire rotor-shaped recess much like the OEM rear for lamp. Still dresses up that area and looks just the same when lit ... just no $70 aluminum accent needed. If you intend to get the rear accent, then I'd suggest you go ahead and get the rear lamp now while it can save you a few bucks.

Up to you...just wanted you to know you have options.

The instructions suggest hooking it up to the license plate wires - that's how I did mine too. Piece of cake.

Does the mirror "wobble" when you press on one side, top, bottom or the other??? I imagine you just don't have one of the ball sockets engaged. Press firmly with the palm of your hand and make sure all 3 "balls" pop into their respective sockets. There are 3 of them, if one is not engaged then behaior like you describe will occur.

Wankel... Check to see if you put al the sockets in, there are 2 green ones that control the mirror. Just put a cloth over the mirror and push in until you hear all 3 clicks. I did mine today... pretty easy

Great job everyone!
It looks like we are nearing the end of the puddle lamps. 50 was the cap and we are 4 more units away from that. I had really thought the Fog Lamp would have been a bigger hit than it was... never-the-less, there are still plenty Fog units left... so maybe you want to consider getting one as well before we officially end this GB!

Hey, got all my jank installed. The puddles look fine and the fog however I'm unsure of. The top of it hangs out what feels like 1/8 of an inch on the top of it. Is it supposed to be flush? I have the one WITHOUT the accent btw. If it isn't flush, how do I go about alinging the cross stitch pattern thingie.

It is a perfectly flush fit. If it "hangs out" I suspect you need to remove a bit more material from the BOTTOM of the hole you've cut. You can check this by looking behind where the lamp is installed and check to see if the neck of the lamp (the receptacle for the bulb assembly) is resting on the bottom of the hole. If it is, then you need to carefully remove a bit more material to lower the neck and allow the top of the lamp to properly seat.

Also check to make sure there is no flash or burrs around the hole that would prevent the lamp from properly seating.

Last, the lamp housing is made from an exact mold of the rear rotor recess in the lower rear apron. Well over 100 have een installed with zero failures. It should fit like a glove. Check to make sure that where you have cut the hole matches up with the lamp. The retaining ring provides plenty of flange for holding the assembly in the recess. In other words, the hole does NOT have to be precisely cut around the neck of the receptacle. Just eye-ball it and look to make sure some small amount of the "cross stitch pattern thingie" above the hole is not preventing the assembly from properly seating.

It sounds like you are real close ... just a bit more finessing.

Puddle lights took me about 45 mins a side, but I was taking it slow. The instructions are great, just be very careful about taking the back off the mirror housing, had to superglue a couple of tabs back on since they're easy to break.

Damn!! Too late on this one. The saddest thing is, I read through every post for 13 pages and lusted after these Puddle Lams, only to find out I'm too late. arg! If anyone has any out there and wants to sell them, PM me please.

He is still selling them I think, just not at the group buy price. They are still a good deal, and they are a great product. I can't wait to install mine in the spring when I take my car out of storage :(

Question:

I just installed one of these this weekend. The problem I ran in to was with the wire taps. Now I've never worked with wiring before, so let me know if I'm an idiot.

Do you have to manually strip the wires involved with the red plastic wire taps, or should the little device do it automatically? I ended up whittling away some wire with a razor blade and getting at it with some electrical tape since my wire taps were pretty f-ed up from my first attempt (did not strip any wire). Just curious how these are supposed to work.

Warning: When removing the rear view mirror housing (the part flush with the door) be careful about the upper-most alignment peg. It is offset so you will have to maneuver it a little bit. Mine would not budge and I ended up breaking it in the process.

All you do with a wire tap is to put the clip over the wire....put the new wire in the side that is only part way....and close the door on the tap....and carefully squish it with a plier....it will cut the wire you are tapping and provide a connection.

If you want a better, permanent install....nothing beats solder and a bit of waterproof heatshrink......

dannobre, thats exactly what I did. actually, I squeezed the hell out of them with a pair of vice grips, but the wire taps didnt even come CLOSE to penetrating the insulation on either of the wires. litteraly, there was a small dent that looked like a child might have tried to bite it once, but that was about it. Maybe I have stronger than normal insulation?

The first taps I tried are no longer usable, so I stripped the wires myself and used the other 2 wire taps. I need two more to do the other side (dont have a soldering gun). Can I pick these up at any hardware store?

Oh, also, I'll be putting in some 194 superbrightleds cause I can't see the lights at all unless it is absolutely pitch black (which doesnt happen often in New Jersey).

Might have been too cold....heat up the wire a bit if you are doing it outside in the cold. You would be better soldering it anyway.......
Should be able to get the wire taps at an automotive store, or an electrical place....

Tom: what kind of superwhites are you using? The last picture (on the first page) of this thread is my car with the bulbs I USED to have in there. They were already quite bright but I switched to autolumination's 194's and those things ROCK!

It looks like they've come out with 2 new designs since I got mine but the ones I have will work quite nicely.

wow, i was wondering if i was just being picky about the brightness. yea, you cant see mine at all either. i had a group of people standing around to see the "NEW PUDDLE LAMPS" and we thought they werent working. so i go and look up into it and they were on. they kind of throw a little haze on the side of the door but thats about it.

mine dont look anything like the pic in the first post ... so a new bulb will fix all that? or did i do something wrong in installation?

Hey RSD, that's EXACTLY what happened when I installed mine! I had a bunch of friends over helping me and when we turned them on....BAM....nothing... Well, there was light but hardly any.

If the lights come on at all, then the install is correct. Just change the bulbs and I think you'll be much happier.

I just replaced my interiors with 6 LED bulbs from superbrightleds.com When I ordered them I ordered two extra, so I am going to throw them in the puddle lamps and see how they work. I'll be curious how the unidirectional-ness will turn out. If it still isnt bright, I have 360° LEDs in my courtesy lights, which I think is unecessary since light only comes out one direction, so I'll put the 6 LED bulbs in my courtesy lights and try the 360° bulbs in the puddle lights. Phew!

If THAT doesn't work, I'll deal with it any order some better bulbs when I get all my other stealth bulbs (crosses fingers)

RSD, I was thinking something like "maybe the current isn't strong enough," but it sounds like its just the bulbs.

oh oh oh ... that may be the problem! when i took the door apart it seemed that someone had already been in there and must have pulled the courtesy light wire off. it is spliced in two places. i didnt solder it (dont know why i didnt think of that when i had the door apart!)

would that cause a low illumination? i didnt do the drivers side until i figured out what i was going to do with the dull lighting.

so could it be the wiring vs the bulb?

Hey Derwankel,

If we send you the bulbs back, do you think you could hook us up with some really bright ones. These ones only help when I am away from civilization and no other lights are on. Do you have these in your car, or are they brighter ones??????????? Valid question I believe.

- if I remember correctly: originally these puddle lights did not even come with bulbs! the bulbs came out recently and are just an extra feature that Derwankle throws in there for us.
With that in mind, I think sending the bulbs back and wanting brighter ones is not the best course of action nor is it very reasonable.

-if you still want a set of these, email Derwankle as he's selling the last of his inventory and then will no longer be making cars for our RX-8's.

Yeah, the guage pod was in the works but the project has been abandoned by Derwankle. Word is that someone else might be continuing his work but you'll have to stay tuned on the pod thread for updates.

autolumination lights should do the trick for ya.

You have two likely options...

the bulb is not working properly.......

or it's not getting enough power. The wire tap may have a poor connection..that's the most likely power problem.

Swap out the bulb...that's the easiest way to check that. Bulb may not be seated in the socket properly either...may have come loose when you installed the mirror

okay, so i got some more wire taps and did my drivers side today. i hooked everything up and checked to make sure it was working. I put new LED bulbs in to make them brighter. all was good. so I put the door back on and all the jazz. and now my driver side light isnt working properly

the lamp goes on when it is supposed to, but only very faintly. I put the same LED bulb in on the passenger side, which is working properly and looks really good with the bright bulb. Why would my drivers side puddle lamp go on but not brightly? Trying to isolate the problem so I dont have to re-do the whole process

I had a very similar problem with mine for about the first month that I had mine (sometimes very faint and sometimes wouldn't come on at all), however, it seems to have fixed itself somehow. I've had mine for about a year now and haven't had any problems with either of them since. I love 'em!

when i get hte patience i will rip apart the door and check out the wire taps. i think that must be the problem

justed posted this in my regional forum but these are the bulbs I got in case you can't figure out which Swoope is suggesting:

Easily 5X as bright as derwankel's halogens. They have made them very useful on my car and I get lots 'O compliments. Just remember to put try flipping it over when they don't work (apparently LED's care about the direction the juice is flowing :dunno: ).

Also, be careful when popping your mirror back on. It was cold out, and I applied force in the wrong direction and broke off one of the ball joints for the smaller directional axes pistons. I don't even wanna think about the repair :crying:
